The hours expansion was reported in February and March 2025, during Costco’s fiscal second quarter—not as a brand-new August 2026 announcement. Costco’s chief executive said the company was generally keeping gas stations open an additional hour, with some stations also opening earlier.

These are a reported standard schedule, not a guarantee for every Costco fuel station. Costco specifically says operating hours can vary by warehouse and location, including in California and Hawaii. Holiday schedules and temporary changes can also affect access.

Check the specific station before making a late fuel run
The safest way to confirm hours is to look up the individual warehouse or gas station in the Costco app or Costco’s warehouse locator. Check the listing on the day you plan to visit, particularly if you are driving late at night, traveling on a holiday, or heading to a station in California or Hawaii.
Do not rely solely on a general search-result schedule. A nearby Costco may have different hours from another location, and the warehouse’s closing time is not necessarily the same as the fuel station’s closing time.
Why Costco extended the hours
The practical goal is convenience. Longer hours give members more opportunities to refuel before work, after the warehouse closes, or outside normal shopping hours.
The timing also came as Costco reported that comparable gasoline sales had declined by low single digits during the fiscal second quarter of 2025. Executives attributed part of that result to slightly lower average prices per gallon, rather than necessarily to fewer gallons sold. Costco also said early usage after the hour changes was improving.

In other words, the change was an operating-hours expansion—not an announcement that Costco gas prices had been reduced or that every station had adopted all-night service.
Who is allowed to buy gas at Costco?
Costco gas stations are generally for Costco members. The company’s gasoline FAQ identifies an important exception: a customer who uses a Costco Shop Card does not have to be a Costco member to purchase fuel.
Longer hours therefore do not make the pumps open to everyone without conditions. A nonmember should have an eligible Costco Shop Card before relying on the exception, while members can use their membership as usual.

What payment methods work at Costco gas stations?
For U.S. Costco gas stations, Costco’s payment documentation dated March 2, 2026 lists these payment methods:
- All Visa cards
- The Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi
- Most PIN-based debit or ATM cards
- Apple Pay
- Costco Shop Cards
- Certain filtered-spend Visa or Mastercard products and other managed-benefit cards listed by Costco
The list applies to U.S. Costco fuel stations and is not automatically the same as the payment list for Costco warehouses or Costco.com. In particular, drivers should not assume that cash, checks, or every mobile wallet accepted inside a warehouse will work at the pump.
The Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi is one of the Visa options Costco lists for U.S. fuel stations. That makes it relevant when comparing payment methods, but the card’s acceptance does not mean every cardholder receives the same fuel economics, and it does not turn the station into a cash-accepting location.

Costco also documented a separate digital-payment development on May 22, 2026: members can add any Visa card to the Digital Membership Card for checkout at Costco warehouses.

That update should not be confused with the gas-station-hours change. Costco’s help information describes the feature as a warehouse-checkout tool and expressly excludes the food court. It does not clearly establish that the digital membership-card feature works universally at every gas pump.
For fuel, use the payment methods Costco specifically lists for the U.S. gas stations and keep a backup eligible card or Shop Card available if a mobile-payment setup is uncertain.

- Early commuters: Many locations open at 6 a.m., giving members an additional option before work.
- Late shoppers: Weekday stations may remain open until 10 p.m. under the reported general schedule.
- Weekend drivers: Saturday and Sunday closing times are earlier than weekday closing time.
- Nonmembers: A Costco Shop Card may provide the stated nonmember access exception, but simply arriving at the pump is not enough.
- Travelers: Verify the exact station rather than assuming another Costco’s hours apply.
Bottom line
Costco’s major gas-station change was an expansion of operating hours, generally to about 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, with shorter weekend schedules. The change gives members a wider window to refuel, but Costco gas is not 24-hour service and local exceptions remain important.
Before leaving, check the station’s current listing in the Costco app or warehouse locator. Confirm that you have the required membership or Costco Shop Card and an accepted U.S. payment method—especially if you are planning a late-night or holiday fuel stop.
