The project is being developed by the company’s Malaysian subsidiary, Leader Energy Storage Sdn Bhd, under Malaysia’s MyBeST programme, with operation expected in 2027.
What Leader Energy is building
The Pajam facility is designed as a utility-scale battery installation rated at 100 megawatts (MW) of power and 400 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy. Leader Energy’s corporate profile says its Malaysian subsidiary received the 100 MW / 400 MWh MyBeST project award in 2025, and the company’s project portfolio, current as of 11 September 2026, lists the project as under development.

DagangNews reported on 13 October 2026 that construction was under way in Pajam, Negeri Sembilan. That report also gives the expected operating year as 2027. No exact commissioning date has been disclosed.

What the rating means
MW describes how much power the battery can deliver or absorb at a given moment. MWh describes how much energy it can store. Dividing 400 MWh by 100 MW gives a nominal four-hour duration at full rated output. That arithmetic does not prove the usable capacity, operating limits, reserve requirements or guaranteed discharge time of the completed system.

Why Malaysia is adding grid-scale batteries
Leader Energy says BESS can help address national-grid limitations during periods of surplus production and peak demand. In its commercial BESS description, the company identifies peak shaving, maximum-demand optimisation and renewable-energy integration as uses for large batteries.
In practical terms, a grid battery can charge when electricity is available or demand is lower, then discharge when the system needs additional power. That flexibility can help manage changing generation and demand, but the published descriptions are general functions of storage; they are not measured performance results from the Pajam project.

Leader Energy’s official profile states: “Leader Energy recognises the importance of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in addressing national grid limitations, particularly during surplus production and peak demand.”
How Pajam fits Malaysia’s storage build-out
Malaysia’s grid-storage programme is developing alongside other large installations. Tenaga Nasional Berhad said in an 18 May 2026 announcement that its separate Santong facility in Terengganu is a 100 MW / 400 MWh system and the country’s first grid-connected BESS. TNB described controlled storage and release at Santong as supporting grid stability and supply reliability.

Santong and Pajam have the same published power and energy ratings, but they are different projects in different locations. Santong’s status and operating arrangements should not be used to infer that Pajam is already connected, operational or using the same technology. No source identified the Pajam battery chemistry, supplier, engineering, procurement and construction contractor or detailed grid-connection plan.
What is known about the schedule
- 2025: Leader Energy records the award of a 100 MW / 400 MWh BESS project under MyBeST for its Malaysian subsidiary.
- 11 September 2026: The company’s portfolio lists the Malaysian BESS as under development.
- 13 October 2026: DagangNews reports construction in Pajam, Negeri Sembilan, and says operation is expected in 2027.
The 2027 statement is an expected operating target, not a guaranteed commissioning date. Construction milestones, testing, grid synchronisation and regulatory approvals can affect when a battery begins commercial service.

What has not been disclosed
- The precise commissioning or commercial-operation date.
- The battery manufacturer and chemistry.
- The EPC contractor and other construction partners.
- The project’s capital cost.
- The point of interconnection, voltage level and specific grid services.
- Usable energy after operating reserves, degradation allowances and other limits.
Leader Energy previously discussed sodium-sulfur batteries and long-duration storage in a 2023 memorandum of understanding with BASF Stationary Energy Storage GmbH. That historical agreement does not establish that sodium-sulfur technology, BASF, NGK or any other named partner is involved in Pajam.

The most useful confirmation will be a project-specific announcement from Leader Energy, the Malaysian authorities or the grid operator identifying the interconnection, technology provider, EPC team and commissioning milestone. Until then, the firm facts are the 100 MW / 400 MWh award, the Pajam construction report, the MyBeST link and the expected 2027 operating year. The project should be described as under construction, not as an operating battery plant.
