What changed with each Range Rover generation?
First generation: Range Rover Classic (1970)
Land Rover launched the original Range Rover on June 17, 1970. Its combination of a lightweight aluminium V8, permanent four-wheel drive and disc brakes on all wheels helped establish the model’s distinctive mix of road-going comfort and off-road capability. The first production body was a three-door; Land Rover dates the four-door version to 1981. Second generation: P38a (1994)
The P38a arrived in 1994 with a long-wheelbase chassis, a redesigned semi-monocoque body and upgraded electronic air suspension, according to Land Rover’s history. “P38a” is the designation commonly used for this generation; the milestone year here is the manufacturer’s generation chronology, not a claim that every market changed over in the same model year. Third generation: L322 (2001)
Land Rover marks 2001 as the L322’s generation milestone and identifies all-round independent air suspension as a defining feature. Land Rover’s Range Rover chronology.
Fourth generation (2012)
The fourth-generation Range Rover was presented in London on September 6, 2012. Land Rover described it as the world’s first SUV with an all-aluminium body. Fifth generation: unveiled in 2021
Land Rover unveiled the fifth-generation Range Rover on October 26, 2021, for the 2022-era model. Use 2021 when referring to the announcement or reveal; it is not a universal model-year start date for every market. Land Rover’s reveal announcement.
Are Range Rover Sport, Evoque and Velar generations of the same vehicle?
No. They are separate model lines within the broader Range Rover family, not successive generations of the flagship Range Rover. Land Rover’s chronology treats Range Rover Sport as a distinct line launched in 2005 and also identifies Evoque and Velar within the family. The years above are launch or reveal milestones from Land Rover’s published history. They do not establish exact production end years, global model-year ranges or crossover rules. Those can differ by market, and the cited histories do not provide a complete market-by-market production table. If you are identifying a particular vehicle for registration, valuation or parts, use its market-specific records and vehicle identification details rather than assigning a model year from this milestone list alone.
