1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere is no universal winner. The XK120 is the most elemental and historically significant of the three; the XK140 keeps much of that shape while adding useful room, steering and suspension improvements; and the XK150 is the most visibly modern, with a wraparound windscreen, a roomier cabin and four-wheel disc brakes. For a real purchase, originality, rust repair, body style, mechanical specification and restoration quality can matter more than the model number.
The three generations at a glance
Jaguar’s XK sports cars evolved in a short production run: the XK120 from 1948 to 1954, the XK140 from 1954 to 1957, and the XK150 from 1957 to 1961. Each was offered as an OTS (Open Two Seater, or Roadster), DHC (Drophead Coupé) and FHC (Fixed Head Coupé), although the XK150 OTS did not arrive until late 1958. The body style is as important to ownership as the generation: an FHC is enclosed and weather-friendly, a DHC combines an open cabin with winding windows, and an OTS puts maximum emphasis on open-air appearance and minimum emphasis on touring practicality.

How to tell an XK120, XK140 and XK150 apart
XK120: the split-screen original
The XK120 established the visual formula: a long bonnet, low flowing wings and a compact cockpit. The most immediately useful identification clue is its two-piece windscreen. Early cars used an aluminium body; later examples were steel. The first 240 were hand-built in aluminium before demand justified press tooling, according to Jaguar’s official history. That early construction is historically important, but it also means that a seller’s claim about an “all-aluminium” car should be checked against chassis records and body details.

XK140: similar outline, fuller details
The XK140 retains the broad XK profile, so it is easy to confuse with an XK120 in photographs. Look for the fuller bumpers, longer roofline and the greater visual bulk around the body. The extra cockpit room came partly from moving the engine forward. The split-screen appearance remains, which is why the XK140 is often the choice for someone who wants the early look without all of the XK120’s compromises.
XK150: the clear visual break
The XK150 is easier to distinguish. Its wings are straighter, the bonnet is wider and the split windscreen has been replaced by a single wraparound screen. The cabin and dashboard were revised, and the car feels more like a grand tourer than a lightly civilised competition car. An XK150 OTS can be especially confusing because production began later than the coupé versions; an open car is not automatically an XK120 or XK140.
| Visual clue | XK120 | XK140 | XK150 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windscreen | Split, two-piece | Split, two-piece | Single wraparound screen |
| Body impression | Lowest, most delicate early form | Same family shape with fuller bumpers and longer roofline | Broader, straighter and more modern-looking |
| Cabin | Tightest of the three | More room than XK120 | Most spacious and touring-oriented |
| Factory brakes | Four-wheel drums | Four-wheel drums | Dunlop discs on all four wheels |
What changed mechanically
XK120: the original mechanical package
The XK120 uses Jaguar’s 3.4-litre twin-cam six. A 2014 Motor Sport buyer guide describes 160 bhp in standard trim and 180 bhp for the cited Special Equipment setup. These are period or guide-reported figures, not a promise about every surviving car: cylinder heads, carburettors, compression ratio, exhaust, engine swaps and later rebuilds can change what a particular example delivers.

As built, the XK120 has a four-speed manual gearbox with no synchromesh on first gear and drum brakes at all four corners. Its steering uses a steering box, and the rear suspension has lever-arm dampers. Those features are part of the car’s character, but they demand more anticipation and maintenance than later systems.

XK140: usability improvements beneath familiar styling
The XK140’s most meaningful changes are not immediately obvious from outside. Rack-and-pinion steering replaces the XK120’s steering box, giving a more direct feel when the system is correctly adjusted. Telescopic dampers replace the XK120’s rear lever-arm units, and the standard engine is more powerful, commonly described by the sources as around 190 bhp. Higher-output options existed, so the exact engine and factory specification must be verified on the individual car.
Moving the engine forward created more cockpit room. A longer roofline and fuller bumpers add to the car’s easier, less cramped character. The XK140 still uses drum brakes as built, so it does not provide the XK150’s factory braking upgrade.
XK150: brakes, space and later engines
The XK150 introduced the clearest functional advance: Dunlop disc brakes on all four wheels. That is a major distinction when comparing cars used on modern roads, although an XK120 or XK140 may have been converted to front discs during its life. Never assume a conversion is factory-original; inspect the parts and documentation.
Early XK150s used 3.4-litre engines, while later cars were available with 3.8 litres. Magneto’s 2025 buying guide reports 220 bhp for a final 3.8-litre XK150 in standard form and 265 bhp for the 3.8 S specification. Badges alone are not enough to establish output. Confirm engine size, cylinder head, carburettors and trim, because period options and subsequent changes produce different combinations.

Steering, braking and road manners
If you want the most direct connection to the original XK experience, the XK120 delivers it. Its steering box, drum brakes and lever-arm dampers require a driver to plan ahead, especially in traffic or on downhill sections. Correct setup matters enormously: worn linkages, a badly adjusted steering box or out-of-round drums can make a sound design feel unsafe.
The XK140 is the natural middle ground. Rack-and-pinion steering removes one of the XK120’s more obvious compromises, and telescopic dampers are generally regarded as stronger and easier to live with than the earlier lever-arm units. It remains an old car, however, and its drum brakes still need correct adjustment and realistic following distances.
The XK150 is the easiest of the three to use for longer, faster touring because of its four-wheel discs and greater cabin space. A later car is not automatically trouble-free: the handbrake arrangement can be difficult to adjust, and a poorly maintained disc system can still suffer from seized calipers, uneven wear or contaminated fluid. A test drive should include repeated moderate stops, not just one dramatic brake application.

| Body style | Strengths | Trade-offs | Best match |
|---|---|---|---|
| OTS / Roadster | Most open-air drama and the cleanest side profile | Least weather protection and touring practicality | Fair-weather driving and visual appeal |
| DHC / Drophead Coupé | Open cabin, winding windows and more protection than an OTS | More weight and complexity than a roadster | Owners wanting open motoring without giving up everyday civility |
| FHC / Fixed Head Coupé | Enclosed cabin, fixed roof and the strongest long-distance practicality | No open-air experience | Regular touring, cooler climates and secure overnight use |
Body-style preference can outweigh a generation preference. Someone who loves the XK120’s shape but tours frequently may be happier in an XK140 DHC or XK150 FHC. Conversely, an OTS chosen for its proportions may be exactly right if weekend weather and luggage capacity are secondary.

Which XK should you choose?
Choose an XK120 when historical character comes first
- You want the earliest and most elemental expression of the XK design.
- You accept tighter accommodation, drum brakes and a less direct steering system.
- You value the 1948–1954 period and are prepared to drive within its limits.
The XK120’s appeal is not simply that it came first. Its light visual touch, split screen and mechanical directness create an experience that later improvements intentionally softened. Buy one for that character, not because it is automatically the “best” XK.
Choose an XK140 for the early look with usable upgrades
- You prefer split-screen styling but need more cockpit room.
- Rack-and-pinion steering and telescopic dampers matter to you.
- You want a car that can be driven regularly without moving to the XK150’s broader styling.
The XK140 is often the most balanced answer. It preserves the visual link to the XK120 while addressing several issues that become obvious on modern roads. Check the exact engine and gearbox specification rather than relying on a model-year assumption.
Choose an XK150 for touring and later-car usability
- You like the wider bonnet, straighter wings and wraparound windscreen.
- Four-wheel disc brakes and a roomier cabin are priorities.
- You expect to tour, carry passengers or spend more time at modern road speeds.
The XK150 is the most developed grand tourer of the trio. Its later 3.8-litre and S versions can be desirable, but an S badge or a claimed engine output should be confirmed against numbers and components.

How to inspect an XK before buying
1. Establish identity and originality
Match the chassis, engine and body details to the paperwork. A Jaguar Heritage Certificate, where available, can help establish how the car was built. Record the engine and block numbers rather than assuming they are original. Harry Rochez of Twyford Moors Classic Cars notes that so many XK units were produced that a later engine in an earlier car is not unusual. A replacement is not automatically a reason to walk away, but it should be disclosed and reflected in the price, specification and restoration story.

We have prepared five simple and beautiful colors for you, you can choose according to your own preferences. Suitable for most of the vehicles on the market, such as car, truck, SUV, RV, van, etc.
2. Inspect the structure before admiring the paint
Look closely where the rear wings attach, around earlier door frames and at the front suspension mounts. Corrosion or poor previous repairs in these areas can cost far more than cosmetic defects. Open and close every panel, inspect shut lines from several angles and look underneath for fresh underseal hiding repairs. A high-quality restoration should have consistent panel alignment, not merely glossy paint.
3. Listen to the XK engine
The XK six is generally robust, but timing-chain tensioners and noisy valve gear deserve attention. Listen at cold start and at operating temperature. Persistent rattling, irregular valve noise, smoke under acceleration or low oil pressure can indicate work that changes both budget and originality. A compression or leak-down test by a specialist is more useful than a short driveway start.
4. Test the Moss gearbox patiently
The four-speed Moss gearbox has no synchromesh on first gear, and second-gear wear is a known concern. Rochez describes it as “a slow ’box in a fast car”: allow the revs to settle, shift deliberately and try double-declutching. Crunching during a careful second-to-third or third-to-second shift is more informative than a seller’s claim that the gearbox is “fine.” Overdrive was optional on XK140 and XK150. Confirm that it engages cleanly, disengages reliably and has the correct oil level.
5. Check brakes, steering and suspension by generation
- On an XK120 or XK140, inspect drum condition, adjustment, wheel cylinders and hydraulic lines. Determine whether any later front-disc conversion is properly engineered and documented.
- On an XK150, check disc condition and the handbrake adjustment; the arrangement can be awkward to set correctly.
- On an XK120, inspect lever-arm dampers for leaks and allow for specialist rebuilding if weak. Later telescopic units are generally considered more durable.
- On every car, look for play in steering joints, uneven tyre wear and suspension movement that does not settle after a bump.
6. Price the condition, not the badge
There is no reliable, current apples-to-apples market index in the available published material for all three generations. Guide prices depend on publication date, country, body style, engine specification and restoration quality. Obtain a current specialist valuation and an independent pre-purchase inspection before committing funds. Include transport, recommissioning, electrical work, cooling-system repairs, tyres and documentation in the budget.
A practical decision framework
- Pick the driving mission: occasional open-air enjoyment, mixed road use or long-distance touring.
- Pick the visual language: split-screen early XK or the wraparound-screen XK150.
- Set a technology floor: accept drums and a steering box, prefer rack-and-pinion, or require factory disc brakes.
- Choose the body style: OTS, DHC or FHC before comparing individual cars.
- Verify the actual car: numbers, engine, body, brakes, gearbox, rust repairs and restoration records.
- Compare condition-adjusted costs: a sound, correctly documented example is usually a better decision than a cheaper car needing structural or drivetrain work.
In short, the XK120 is the choice for purity and origin, the XK140 for an early appearance with meaningful usability gains, and the XK150 for a broader, more capable tourer. Treat those as starting points, not rankings: the right XK is the one whose body style, specification and condition match how you will actually drive it.
