For the Indian-market Tata Nano tested by Global NCAP in 2014, the evidence points to serious safety concerns for highway use. That no-airbag test earned zero stars for adult and child occupant protection, and its bodyshell was rated unstable. Tata Motors’ launch-era claim of a 105 km/h top speed does not establish that the Nano is safe or comfortable to drive at highway speeds. The result applies to the tested configuration—not automatically to every Nano year, trim, modification, or surviving vehicle.
What did the Tata Nano crash test find?
Global NCAP tested an Indian-market, right-hand-drive Tata Nano without airbags at 64 km/h in 2014. The model-specific report awarded it 0.00 out of 17 adult-occupant points and 0.00 out of 49 child-occupant points, with zero-star ratings for both categories. The report also rated the bodyshell unstable. These are results for the tested car and assessment, not a universal rating for every Nano configuration. Adult protection
The report describes poor protection for the driver’s head, neck, and chest, marginal chest protection for the passenger, and potentially dangerous structures around the driver’s and passenger’s knees. Its unstable-bodyshell finding is a serious concern: Global NCAP said the structural weaknesses were such that fitting airbags would not effectively reduce the risk of serious injury in the tested models.
Child protection and rear restraints
In the tested configuration, the rear seats had two-point static belts, and the assessment could not identify a suitable child restraint. Global NCAP therefore concluded that, under its assessment criteria, the model could not safely transport children. A child seat appearing to fit physically is not proof that it can be secured correctly: confirm restraint compatibility for the exact car and follow applicable qualified guidance.

Does the Nano’s top speed make it suitable for highways?
No. Tata Motors’ 2009 launch announcement listed a top speed of 105 km/h, along with 35 PS at 5,250 rpm and 48 Nm at 3,000 rpm. Those are manufacturer-published period specifications, not independent evidence of safe sustained cruising, loaded acceleration, braking, or stability. A top-speed figure also says nothing about the condition of an individual used car. Tata’s launch announcement is the source for these figures.
The cited sources do not provide verified braking distances, high-speed stability or lane-change results, road-noise measurements, or controlled performance comparisons across Nano trims. Comparing the published 105 km/h maximum with a highway speed limit cannot resolve those questions. The strongest practical concern established here is crash protection: Global NCAP’s 64 km/h consumer crash assessment found zero-point occupant scores and an unstable structure.

How do Tata’s launch-era safety claims compare with the later test?
At launch, Tata Motors said the Nano had passed rollover and offset-impact tests, complied with Indian safety standards then in force, and included features such as an all-sheet-metal body, reinforced passenger compartment, crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, seat belts, and tubeless tyres. These are the manufacturer’s statements from 2009. Global NCAP’s later independent test assessed a specific no-airbag Nano under its own protocol and found zero-star occupant results and an unstable bodyshell. The claims refer to different sources and test contexts; the 2014 independent crash finding is the central evidence for judging the tested car’s occupant protection.
What does the Nano’s production history tell used-car buyers?
The World Health Organization’s Global Status Report on Road Safety 2018 says India introduced newer vehicle safety requirements, including crash-test rules and standard airbags for new cars, and that production of older designs unable to pass newer tests—including the Nano—was being phased out. This is historical context from a 2018 report, not a current legal determination about any particular used vehicle.

What should you check on a particular used Nano?
The cited crash test cannot establish the condition or safety performance of every year, trim, or modified car. Before considering highway use, verify the exact vehicle and have its roadworthiness assessed by a qualified professional. Check:
- Year, trim, and whether its restraints and safety equipment match the vehicle documentation.
- Seat belts and, if children will travel, compatibility of the exact child restraint with the car’s seating position and belt arrangement.
- Tyres, brakes, maintenance history, and any modifications, with the inspection and recommendations tied to the specific car.
These checks can help establish the condition of an individual vehicle; they do not overturn the crash-test result for the tested configuration or establish that another configuration performs the same way.

How to compare a Nano with another car for highway use
Compare exact versions using the same relevant evidence rather than relying on model names or top-speed claims. Look for:
- Adult crash protection and structural-integrity results.
- Child-protection results and compatible child-restraint belts or anchorages.
- Standard safety equipment on the specific trim.
- Independently measured braking and stability evidence.
- Usable performance at legal highway speeds with passengers and luggage.
- The age, maintenance, and condition of the actual vehicle.
Do not treat star ratings from different test protocols as directly interchangeable.
