Is the MG Hector expensive to maintain? Not necessarily, but the answer depends on which cost measure you use. JSW MG Motor India currently publishes a preventive-maintenance benchmark of ₹0.82 per kilometre for petrol and ₹0.93 per kilometre for diesel, calculated through 100,000 km in Delhi-NCR and stated to include parts, consumables, labour and taxes. A separate CarDekho schedule estimate lists approximately ₹35,067 for five years of petrol servicing and ₹19,042 for diesel, but excludes GST and extra labour. Those figures are not comparable enough to average into one “true” cost. Treat the MG figure as a manufacturer benchmark, obtain a car-specific estimate from a dealer, and check the warranty and service package attached to your Hector’s model year.
What the published MG Hector maintenance figures mean
There is no single bill that applies to every Hector. Fuel type, model year, variant, transmission, mileage, city, workshop rates, vehicle condition and the work authorised at each visit all affect the amount you pay. The most useful published numbers are estimates with different scopes.

Using simple arithmetic, MG’s current benchmark corresponds to about ₹82,000 for 100,000 km of petrol preventive maintenance and ₹93,000 for 100,000 km of diesel preventive maintenance. That multiplication only illustrates the stated rate; it does not turn the estimate into a fixed package price or an annual invoice.

Real bills arrive at service intervals, so one year may be cheaper and the next more expensive. The figures also cover preventive maintenance, not fuel, insurance, accident repairs, tyres, battery replacement, bodywork or every possible mechanical failure.

Why the MG and CarDekho numbers differ
They measure different periods
MG expresses its estimate as a distance-based rate up to 100,000 km. CarDekho presents an approximate five-year schedule total. A five-year owner who drives 8,000 km annually covers a very different distance from one who drives 25,000 km annually, so the two formats cannot be compared without matching mileage.
They have different inclusions
MG states that its benchmark includes parts, consumables, labour and taxes. CarDekho explicitly says its approximate totals exclude GST and extra labour. A lower-looking five-year number can therefore reflect narrower inclusions rather than a cheaper car.
Location and condition change the invoice
CarDekho warns that location and vehicle condition affect its figures. Workshop labour rates, local taxes, operating conditions and additional work found during an inspection vary by city. A vehicle used mostly in heavy traffic, on rough roads or for short trips may need attention that a lightly used highway car does not.

The ₹0.45/km petrol and ₹0.49/km diesel figures reported by Autocar India in 2019 were launch-era claims. They are useful for explaining why older web pages show lower numbers, but they should not be used to budget a Hector today.

What routine Hector servicing normally represents
The published MG benchmark is specifically for preventive maintenance. In practical terms, that category is the scheduled work intended to keep the vehicle operating correctly: inspection, replacement of routine consumables, prescribed fluids and filters, and other items listed for the relevant service interval. The exact task list depends on the engine, variant, mileage and service schedule in the owner documentation.
It does not establish a universal allowance for every wear or repair item. Tyres, clutch components, brake parts, suspension components, wiper blades, the battery, air-conditioning repairs, accident damage and unexpected electronic or mechanical faults may be outside a scheduled-service estimate. Ask the workshop to identify whether each line is scheduled maintenance, a condition-based replacement or an optional recommendation.
- Request the service schedule for your registration year and engine, not a generic Hector list.
- Ask for quantities and part numbers for fluids, filters and other replaceable items.
- Confirm whether diagnostic charges, disposal fees, shop supplies and taxes are included.
- Have wear-item replacements separated from the periodic-service subtotal.
Warranty, labour-free services and prepaid maintenance
The announced 3+3+3 package
In its December 15, 2025 announcement for the All-New Hector, JSW MG Motor India described a standard “3+3+3” MG Shield package: three years of warranty with unlimited kilometres, three years of roadside assistance and three labour-free periodic services. “Labour-free” does not automatically mean that every service invoice is zero. Parts, fluids, consumables, taxes, wear items and work outside the covered periodic service can still be chargeable unless the written terms say otherwise.
This announcement applies to the All-New Hector described in that release. Do not assume an older Hector received the same package. Check the purchase invoice, warranty booklet and the terms issued with the vehicle.

Shield Protect prepaid plan
MG’s current service page advertises a Hector Shield Protect plan from ₹26,000 for private vehicles. The public offer says it must be purchased within 10,000 km or 12 months from purchase, whichever comes first. “Starting at” is not a personalised price: coverage, engine, variant, location and eligibility can change the final amount.
Before paying for a prepaid plan, ask the dealer for a written schedule showing covered services, covered parts and consumables, labour treatment, taxes, transferability, exclusions, cancellation rules and what happens if you miss an interval. Compare that document with the cost of paying for the same scheduled work as it becomes due. The plan can make spending more predictable, but predictability is not proof that it is cheaper for every owner.
Roadside assistance and owner documents
The MG service information page directs owners to the Hector owner’s manual and service and warranty information. Its roadside-assistance section lists Pulse Hub at 1800 100 6464. Use the documents supplied with your vehicle to confirm eligibility, response limits and exclusions because assistance terms can differ by model year and usage.

- Record the vehicle identity. Note the registration year, exact variant, petrol or diesel engine, transmission, current odometer and city where it is serviced.
- Bring the service history. Include invoices, previous inspection notes, warranty repairs and any missed or delayed interval. A workshop can price the next visit more accurately when it knows what has already been replaced.
- Request an itemised estimate before authorising work. It should show labour, parts, consumables, taxes and any diagnostic or environmental charges separately.
- Separate required work from recommendations. Ask which operations are due by the official schedule, which are necessary because of measured wear and which are optional preventative suggestions.
- Ask for evidence on condition-based items. For brakes, tyres, battery, suspension or belts, request measurements, photographs or the inspection finding that supports replacement.
- Check package entitlements. Confirm remaining warranty, labour-free services, roadside assistance and any Shield Protect coverage before paying for work that may be included.
- Compare like with like. If you obtain another quote, ensure both estimates use the same interval, parts standard, tax treatment and list of operations.
This process produces a useful ownership budget even when no source publishes an exact bill for your city. It also prevents a per-kilometre benchmark from being mistaken for a promise about the next visit.

When a Hector can become costly to keep
Deferred scheduled work
Skipping or delaying a service can move a predictable maintenance item into a larger repair. Keep records of dates and odometer readings, and ask the service centre to identify any overdue interval before discussing optional work.
High annual mileage
A distance-based benchmark naturally produces more maintenance spending for a high-mileage driver. Someone covering 25,000 km a year will reach mileage-related operations sooner than someone driving 8,000 km, even if both own the same variant.
Severe operating conditions
Stop-start traffic, dusty roads, frequent short journeys, heavy loads and extreme heat can place more demand on consumables and wear items. Whether a particular item needs earlier replacement must be established from the inspection and the applicable schedule, not assumed from the benchmark alone.

Out-of-warranty failures and wear items
The current published numbers do not establish a universal allowance for repairs outside preventive maintenance. Budget separately for tyres, battery, brakes, clutch-related work, suspension, air-conditioning and accidental damage, and keep an emergency reserve rather than treating the scheduled-service estimate as a complete ownership ceiling.

How to compare Hector ownership costs with another SUV
A fair comparison requires the same basis on both vehicles. Use this checklist before deciding that one is cheaper:

| Are city, dealer and vehicle condition comparable? | Local rates and the condition of a specific used vehicle affect actual invoices. |
Without current, like-for-like figures for the other vehicle, the available Hector data cannot prove that it is cheaper or more expensive than a competitor.
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
- It supports a current MG preventive-maintenance benchmark of ₹0.82/km for petrol and ₹0.93/km for diesel under the stated Delhi-NCR, 100,000-km basis.
- It supports CarDekho’s approximate five-year schedule figures, with that page’s stated GST and extra-labour exclusions.
- It supports the announced All-New Hector 3+3+3 package and the currently advertised Shield Protect starting price and purchase window.
- It does not establish one exact annual bill for every Hector owner.
- It does not include every repair, accident, wear item or individual driving pattern in either published estimate.
- It does not make the 2019 launch-era rate a valid current quotation.
The practical verdict is therefore conditional: routine Hector maintenance has a published benchmark and may be manageable when services are performed on schedule, but the vehicle should not be labelled universally cheap or expensive from one number. Use the current rate as a planning reference, treat the five-year estimate as a separate schedule projection with exclusions, and obtain an itemised quote tied to your exact car before committing to the next service.
