The Jeep Compass has no single reliability verdict that fits every model year or vehicle. Consumer Reports’ summary places the 2025 Compass at about average for reliability among vehicles from the same year, while owner-complaint data shows that electrical and powertrain concerns recur in reports and that some model years attract more complaints than others. For a used Compass, the individual vehicle matters most: verify its VIN-specific recall status, review service records, scan for stored codes, and pay for an independent inspection before buying.
What the available reliability evidence actually says
Reliability information for the Compass comes in several forms, and each answers a different question. A predicted-reliability survey compares expected performance with other vehicles. A complaint database records what owners chose to report. A recall record identifies a safety defect for which a remedy is required. ForCar’s displayed aggregation of NHTSA owner complaints for Compass model years 2007–2026 listed 868 Electrical System reports and 476 Power Train reports when accessed October 13, 2026. Those are counts of unverified owner reports, not confirmed defects or failure rates. They are useful for deciding what to inspect and what questions to ask, but they should not be converted into a percentage risk for an individual Compass.
Which Compass problems should owners check first?
Electrical-system symptoms
Electrical System was the largest category in the cited complaint aggregation. During a test drive, watch for warning lamps that appear unexpectedly, intermittent starting, accessories that stop working, flickering displays, repeated battery discharge, or an infotainment or instrument panel that resets. These observations do not prove a defect; they indicate that the vehicle deserves a closer electrical diagnosis.

Ask the seller when the battery, charging system or any control module was last serviced. Look for invoices rather than relying on a verbal assurance. A vehicle that has recently received repeated electrical repairs deserves extra scrutiny for the underlying cause, wiring condition and quality of the repair.
Powertrain reports
Power Train was the second-largest visible category, with 476 reports in the same snapshot. Check for hesitation, harsh or delayed engagement, unexpected loss of power, unusual vibration, drivetrain warning messages, fluid leaks or noises that change with engine speed or vehicle speed. Confirm whether any warning light has been recently cleared; a recently reset system may need more driving before a code returns.
Review maintenance invoices for the engine, transmission and four-wheel-drive system if equipped. Match the work to the mileage shown on the odometer and to the model-year maintenance schedule. A mechanic should inspect leaks, mounts, fluid condition and stored diagnostic information rather than relying only on a short drive.

Engine-shutdown reports on certain 2019–2020 vehicles
In December 2023, the Associated Press reported that NHTSA closed an investigation into engine-shutdown complaints involving certain 2019–2020 Compass vehicles. The agency had received 15 complaints; the report described a low failure rate, one crash allegation and no injuries. NHTSA closed the investigation without seeking a recall.
This outcome is historical and does not establish that every 2019 or 2020 Compass is affected, nor does it prove that an individual vehicle cannot shut down. If you are considering one of those years, ask specifically about any shutdown, stalling or loss-of-power event, obtain repair documentation, scan for codes and verify the current VIN recall record.
How model year changes the question
2025 model year
Consumer Reports’ 2025 summary characterizes Compass reliability as about average compared with other vehicles from that model year. “About average” is a relative, qualitative description, not a prediction that a particular vehicle will have average repair bills. Newer vehicles also have less time in service, so fewer owner reports may exist simply because there has been less opportunity to report problems.

Older and middle-year vehicles
ForCar’s year-by-year display showed a higher complaint rate for 2018 than for several other listed Compass years. The source also warns that the newest years are too recent for fair comparisons. Complaint totals and rates are affected by the number of vehicles sold, miles driven, time in service and owners’ willingness to file reports. Treat 2018 as a reason to inspect carefully, not as an automatic “avoid” rule.

Step-by-step checks before buying a used Compass
- Record the full VIN. Obtain it from the vehicle and title or registration, then make sure the characters match. Do not rely on a stock listing photo or a partial VIN.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. Confirm whether any unrepaired recall is listed and whether the remedy is complete. NHTSA states that recalls do not expire; contact the manufacturer if the record is unclear. A recall search is vehicle-specific, so a result for another Compass is not relevant.
- Collect service and repair records. Look for dates, mileage, parts replaced and the shop that performed the work. Pay particular attention to repeated electrical complaints, warning-light visits, battery or charging repairs, transmission work and any loss-of-power or shutdown description.
- Inspect the vehicle cold. Arrange to see it before it has been warmed up. Verify that the warning lamps illuminate during the initial key-on self-check and then go out after starting. A missing lamp or an unusually clean dashboard can warrant further questions.
- Perform a complete test drive. Use city and highway speeds when legal and safe. Note starting behavior, idle quality, shifts, acceleration, braking, steering, vibrations, warning messages and any accessory or display resets. Do not continue driving if the vehicle loses power or presents a safety hazard.
- Scan the diagnostic system. An OBD-II scan can reveal stored or pending codes and monitor readiness. Record the exact codes and freeze-frame information if available. A clean scan does not prove reliability: codes may have been cleared, a fault may be intermittent, and mechanical problems may not set a code.
- Pay for an independent inspection. Choose a qualified mechanic who is not financially tied to the seller. Request a written report covering leaks, suspension and steering, brakes, tires, battery and charging output, underbody damage, drivetrain operation and any code-related diagnosis. Complaint data cannot replace this examination.
- Price repairs before committing. Obtain estimates for every safety or reliability issue found. Use the total cost, not just the purchase price, to decide whether the vehicle makes sense.
What to ask the seller and mechanic
Questions for the seller
- Has the vehicle ever stalled, shut down, hesitated or lost power while moving?
- Which warning lights have appeared, and when were they last on?
- Has the battery, alternator, wiring or an electronic control module been replaced?
- Has any transmission or drivetrain component been repaired or replaced?
- Are all recall remedies documented as complete?
- Can you provide invoices or dealer records showing mileage and dates?
Questions for the mechanic
- Are there stored, pending or history codes, and do they match the vehicle’s symptoms?
- Does the charging system maintain the manufacturer’s specified voltage under load?
- Are there fluid leaks, abnormal noises, harsh shifts or signs of overheating?
- Is there evidence that codes were recently cleared or monitors are not ready?
- Which findings are safety-critical, which are reliability risks and which are normal wear?
- What should be repaired immediately, and what can be budgeted for later?
Complaint, investigation and recall are not the same thing
A consumer complaint is an owner’s report to NHTSA about a possible safety issue. NHTSA reviews complaints and other information to decide whether a potential trend merits an investigation. An investigation is an agency examination of the evidence; it is not a finding that every reported vehicle is defective.

A recall follows a determination that a vehicle or equipment presents an unreasonable safety risk or fails minimum safety standards. The manufacturer must provide a remedy. A complaint can exist without a recall, and a vehicle can have expensive non-recall problems even when its VIN shows no open recall.
When asked how many complaints are needed to open an investigation, NHTSA’s official answer is: “There is no set number.” The agency evaluates each complaint with other available data. Therefore, neither a large complaint count nor a small one should be treated as a direct failure probability for your Compass.

Using an OBD-II scan without overtrusting it
A basic scan tool is an optional aid during a used-car assessment. Plug it into the vehicle’s diagnostic port with the ignition off, follow the tool’s instructions, and save the code numbers before clearing anything. Interpret codes as clues. A code can be caused by a sensor, wiring, software, a power-supply problem or a larger mechanical fault. Conversely, a vehicle can have worn components, weak battery performance or developing transmission trouble without a stored code. Have a technician test the suspected system and explain the repair evidence.
Ongoing ownership checks
- Follow the correct model-year maintenance schedule and keep dated records.
- Investigate a new warning lamp, repeated battery drain, hesitation, harsh shifting or unexpected loss of power promptly.
- Use the owner manual to identify indicator meanings and the proper response; procedures can differ by model year and equipment.
- Recheck recall status if you move, buy from another owner or receive a manufacturer notice.
- At each service, ask the shop to document symptoms, diagnostic codes, measurements and parts replaced.
