Ford has not announced a new Shelby GT500. Instead, its Ford Racing-developed 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC occupies a similar high-performance spot in the lineup, with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 and, according to Ford, 795 horsepower. It is not called a Shelby, and Ford’s announcements do not say a GT500 revival is impossible. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: Ford has introduced a new flagship-style Mustang, while a future Ford-Shelby GT500 remains unconfirmed.
What is the Dark Horse SC?
Ford Racing introduced the Dark Horse SC on January 14, 2026, as a supercharged version of the Mustang Dark Horse. Ford says its development drew on Mustang GT3 and GTD lessons, with engineering revisions to the engine, gearbox, aerodynamics, cooling, brakes, suspension tuning, steering feel and tires. It pairs a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Ford Racing framed the car as an extension of its road-and-racing work. Mark Rushbrook, Ford Racing’s global director, said: “Mustang Dark Horse SC is the next chapter, drawing on lessons from Mustang GT3 and technology and learnings from Mustang GTD. It demonstrates exactly how Ford Racing is bringing our race and road operations together.” Ford Racing’s announcement also quotes chief program engineer Arie Groeneveld describing development alongside the Mustang GTD and GT4 at Sebring and Virginia International Raceway.
How much power does it make, and what does it cost?
Ford’s April 20, 2026 order update gives the Dark Horse SC output of 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque. Ford said orders were open and initial deliveries were scheduled for summer 2026. Those are manufacturer figures and schedule statements, not independent test results; delivery timing can change. Ford’s order announcement has the dated details.

Ford’s live 2026 Mustang product page displayed a starting MSRP of $106,090 when checked October 8, 2026. That is a changeable manufacturer-listed starting price, not a dealer quote, transaction price or direct price comparison with a GT500. The same page lists MagneRide suspension and Brembo brakes among the Dark Horse SC’s equipment. Check Ford’s current 2026 Mustang page for any updated price or configuration details.
What does the Track Pack add?
The optional Track Pack is the more track-focused configuration. Ford lists carbon-fiber wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires; its order update also specifies Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes and removal of the rear seat. Ford says the package reduces weight by about 150 pounds. That is Ford’s stated package figure, not an independent measurement.

The equipment indicates a more specialized track setup, but it does not by itself establish how the car performs against a GT500 or another rival. The cited Ford materials provide no independent lap-time or acceleration comparison.
Is Ford bringing back the Shelby GT500?
There is no definitive GT500 revival announcement in the cited Ford or Shelby American materials. That does not prove a revival will never happen; it means the available public statements do not establish one. Ford’s Dark Horse SC announcements describe a Ford Racing-developed Dark Horse, not a Shelby-branded model or a direct mechanical carryover from a past GT500.

Shelby American’s current 2026 GT350 material shows that the Shelby name continues on separate offerings, but it does not announce a Ford-Shelby GT500. Shelby American’s 2026 GT350 brochure is evidence of its current GT350 offering—not of a GT500 plan.
How does the Dark Horse SC compare with a GT500?
Calling the Dark Horse SC the “new GT500” is a useful shorthand only for its broad role as a high-performance Mustang. It is not an official replacement designation. A fair technical comparison would need to match the GT500’s model year and generation and distinguish a Ford factory model from a Shelby American conversion or other Shelby-branded car. It should also compare power and torque, transmission, track equipment, tires and brakes, body style, and price on the same basis and date.

The available materials establish the Dark Horse SC’s specifications and Ford’s listed starting MSRP, but do not provide a matched GT500 price or independent head-to-head test. Without those, a claim that one is faster, better value or a direct successor would go beyond the evidence.

Ford announced a Dark Horse SC convertible on August 17, 2026. Ford said orders were expected in fall 2026 and showroom arrivals in spring 2027; those are planned dates, not a guarantee. The convertible is also listed at 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft. Ford describes its suspension tuning as suited to street driving and grand touring, contrasting its open-road emphasis with the coupe’s lap-time focus.

Chief engineer Arie Groeneveld said: “Both the Dark Horse SC coupe and convertible have been developed by our Ford Racing engineers,” in Ford Racing’s convertible announcement. The announcement treats the convertible as another Dark Horse SC variant, not as a Shelby GT500 revival.
Quick Recap
What buyers should verify
- Price and availability: Check Ford’s live page and a dealer for current pricing, allocation and delivery estimates; the listed MSRP and announced schedules can change.
- Configuration: Confirm whether a car has the optional Track Pack and which equipment is included in the specific build.
- Driving experience eligibility: Ford’s product page says its Dark Horse Track Attack experience is currently available only to Mustang Dark Horse owners, but does not clarify whether Dark Horse SC owners qualify. Confirm eligibility with Ford before relying on it.
