The company’s plan calls for assembly at Louisville Assembly Plant and production to begin in 2027; Ford’s targeted starting price is about $30,000, not a confirmed MSRP. The truck’s final price, range, battery options and charging details have not been announced.
Which electric pickup is Ford talking about?
Ford’s August 11, 2025 announcement named a midsize, four-door electric pickup as the first vehicle on its Universal EV Platform. Ford said it would be assembled at Louisville Assembly Plant for U.S. and export markets, with launch scheduled for 2027. Those are company plans, not confirmation that production or customer deliveries have begun. Ford’s announcement
Ford’s later SEC-filed strategy update, dated December 15, 2025, again described the first Universal EV Platform vehicle as a fully connected midsize pickup at Louisville, with production starting in 2027. That is the latest roadmap update cited here. Ford’s December 2025 SEC filing
What does “low-cost platform” mean?
The Universal EV Platform is Ford’s planned foundation for a family of affordable electric vehicles. Ford says the pickup will use a structural, cobalt-free and nickel-free prismatic LFP battery pack that also serves as the vehicle floor. The company says that layout, shorter wiring and other design choices reduce vehicle complexity and the number of components.

The same interview described the harness as 22 pounds lighter than the first-generation electric SUV’s harness; Ford’s platform article gives the more specific metric of 10 kilograms lighter. What Ford has said about the truck itself
Ford has described a practical pickup that is not intended to feel stripped down. The company projected more passenger room than the latest Toyota RAV4, along with a front trunk and pickup bed, and targeted acceleration as fast as a Mustang EcoBoost. These are Ford’s product aims, not independent measurements or test results. Doug Field said the goal was to make the vehicle deliver on design, space and driving enjoyment alongside affordability. This is not the next-generation F-150 Lightning
The Universal EV Platform pickup is a separate program from Ford’s next-generation full-size electric truck plans. Ford’s 2024 strategy discussed the affordable midsize pickup separately from Project T3, the codename for a next-generation full-size electric truck. In its December 2025 update, Ford said the next-generation F-150 Lightning would move to an extended-range electric vehicle architecture, while continuing to identify the Universal Platform’s first vehicle as a midsize pickup. What to watch for next
The next useful milestones are a vehicle reveal and publication of final pricing and technical specifications. Once Ford releases them, buyers can compare the pickup on confirmed MSRP, usable range, charging connector and speed, cabin and bed utility, towing and payload, warranty and ownership costs. Ford has also described a five-year ownership-cost target lower than buying a three-year-old Tesla Model Y; that is a Ford target, not a completed independent comparison. Ford’s platform article
