Any forgotten items can cause malfunctions, engine damage and fires.” That warning is model-specific, but it describes the kinds of consequences a loose item can create.

Mazda’s 2019 Mazda6 manual similarly warns that leaving items in the engine compartment may result in engine damage or fire, potentially leading to an unexpected accident. The same manual notes that the cooling fan can continue running or start unexpectedly. Switching the ignition off therefore does not automatically make the bay safe to touch.
Decide what to do before starting the vehicle
If you know a tool or object is under the hood and the vehicle has not been started, leave the engine off. Check the engine compartment from a stable position and follow the inspection cautions in your vehicle’s owner manual.
Remove it only when access is plainly safe
You may retrieve the item when you can see it clearly and pick it up without placing a hand near a fan, belt, pulley or other moving part, and without touching a hot surface. Do not lean across the bay or reach into a gap you cannot see. Keep loose clothing and hands away from components that could move if the fan activates.

Stop when the location is uncertain
If the object has fallen below a cover, behind a shield, beneath the engine or into an area you cannot see, do not probe blindly. Do not use another tool to hook it out unless your vehicle manual specifically describes a safe procedure. A qualified technician can raise or inspect the vehicle with the appropriate precautions.
Close the hood only after checking
Hyundai’s 2025 owner manual tells drivers to check the engine compartment or hood opening before closing the hood and to remove tools and other loose objects. Treat that as a useful final check after maintenance, topping up fluids or any work under the hood.

Do not restart to test the theory
Starting the engine to see whether the item moves can pull it into a belt or fan, launch it through the bay or place it against a hot component.
