The incident did not remotely shut off every vehicle. Intoxalock said the in-car devices remained operational, but drivers whose required service fell during the outage could face start delays, lockouts, towing, and compliance problems because the backend service workflow was unavailable.
Systems were reported restored on March 22, 2026. Some customers still needed follow-up calibration or documentation, and the company’s temporary extensions were state-specific rather than a permanent waiver of IID requirements.
What the Intoxalock cyberattack actually did
The March 2026 cyberattack on Intoxalock disrupted the company’s installation, calibration, and customer-support systems. That disruption left some drivers unable to use their vehicles when a required ignition-interlock calibration came due—but it did not remotely shut off every Intoxalock-equipped car in the United States.
Intoxalock said its in-vehicle devices continued operating and told customers to keep following the device’s prompts. The main risk was to drivers whose vehicles needed service during the outage: the hardware could still request and evaluate a breath sample, but the service-center and compliance systems needed to complete calibration or update authorization were unavailable or unreliable. Intoxalock’s incident status page later reported that installations, calibrations, and service-center support had resumed on March 22, 2026.

That distinction matters. The available public evidence supports a serious backend and service-provider outage with physical consequences for a subset of drivers—not evidence that hackers took control of all affected vehicles, compromised breath-alcohol measurements, or disabled approximately 150,000 users simultaneously.
Why a backend outage could prevent a car from starting
An ignition-interlock device, or IID, is a vehicle-installed breath-testing system generally used to require a passing breath sample before the vehicle starts. Drivers under a court- or state-supervised program must also bring the device to an authorized service center at scheduled intervals for inspection, calibration, and compliance-record updates.
The exact interval depends on the state and the driver’s program. In Connecticut, for example, some drivers are required to have the device serviced every 25 to 30 days. If a calibration deadline arrives while the provider cannot perform the service or update the compliance workflow, the vehicle may delay or prevent a start under the applicable program rules. Connecticut Public reported that Intoxalock estimated roughly 7% to 10% of its approximately 6,000 Connecticut customers might have needed calibration during the disruption.
In other words, the outage exposed a dependency between a physical vehicle device and a provider’s networked infrastructure:

- The device could continue giving prompts and operating as designed, according to Intoxalock.
- The driver still had to meet the normal breath-test and service requirements.
- The provider’s service-center, calibration, authorization, and compliance systems were disrupted.
- A driver whose deadline intersected with that disruption could face a start delay, lockout, or a vehicle stranded at a service or repair location.
IEEE Spectrum described the incident as an example of how cloud- or network-dependent transportation services can fail without an attacker directly controlling a car. Intoxalock said vehicle-safety systems and breath-alcohol measurements were not compromised.

Timeline of the Intoxalock incident
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| March 14, 2026 | Intoxalock’s status materials identify this as the date the cyber event began. |
| March 15 | The company publicly said it had identified and was investigating a cybersecurity event that affected its ability to service customers. It paused some systems as a precaution, and installation appointments were temporarily suspended. |
| March 17 | Intoxalock said the devices were operating and instructed customers to continue using them as intended. |
| March 18 | The company announced a temporary 10-day service-date extension in eligible states. It also said it would cover qualifying costs directly resulting from the pause, including certain towing expenses. |
| March 20 | TechCrunch reported that drivers in multiple states were experiencing start delays or lockouts when calibrations could not be completed. Intoxalock had not disclosed whether the event involved ransomware, a ransom demand, or a confirmed data breach. |
| March 22 | At 5:30 p.m. EDT, Intoxalock reported that systems had resumed and that installations, calibrations, and service-center support were available. |
| March 24 | The status page instructed Tennessee customers who had received an extension to return to a service center by this date. Anyone who missed that date should contact the company and the relevant state authority rather than assume the extension remains valid. |
Restoration of the systems on March 22 did not necessarily mean every affected driver was immediately back to normal. Some customers still needed to complete a delayed calibration, document a missed appointment, resolve a compliance record, or arrange transportation after a tow.
Which drivers and states were affected?
Reports documented effects in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Minnesota, and other states. Intoxalock says it is an approved provider in 46 states and serves about 150,000 customers annually, so a provider-level outage could have consequences across a wide geographic area. The company’s main site describes its national footprint.
However, “drivers stranded across the US” should not be read as meaning every customer was locked out. The evidence points primarily to customers who needed calibration or related service while the systems were paused. Intoxalock told Breached.Company that the devices remained operational and that the affected population was mainly customers whose calibration needs coincided with the outage.
The practical impact varied by state and circumstance. A driver with several days remaining before a service deadline might have been able to continue driving. A driver whose deadline arrived during the outage could be unable to start the vehicle, face a lockout after an unsuccessful service attempt, or be forced to leave the vehicle at a service center. State rules, court orders, device settings, and the timing of the appointment all mattered.

A March 30 report about a proposed class action said the complaint alleged that attackers disabled network infrastructure and stole large amounts of information. Those are allegations made in litigation, not established findings. KCCI’s report on the lawsuit should therefore be read as a description of claims in a pending case—not as official confirmation that a data breach occurred or that plaintiffs have prevailed.
What affected Intoxalock customers should do
If your vehicle was affected, treat the issue as both a vehicle-service problem and a compliance problem. Do not assume that a restored website or a working breath test automatically clears a missed state deadline.
- Check the official incident information. Review the Intoxalock status page and your messages from the company. Incident policies, extensions, and service availability can change by state.
- Contact your authorized service center. Ask whether it can perform the overdue calibration and whether your compliance record needs to be updated manually. Keep the appointment confirmation and the name or identification of the person who helped you.
- Contact the state authority that supervises your requirement. Depending on the program, that may be a motor-vehicle agency, probation office, court, or another state-designated authority. Ask how the outage affects your deadline and what documentation is required. A private provider’s extension does not automatically override a court order or state rule.
- Ask whether you qualify for the temporary extension. The 10-day extension applied only in eligible states and circumstances. It was not a permanent waiver of calibration requirements. Tennessee customers were specifically directed to return by March 24, 2026; anyone still unresolved should seek current instructions directly from Intoxalock and the state authority.
- Document costs and missed service. Save tow bills, roadside-assistance receipts, repair or storage charges, appointment records, screenshots, emails, and other evidence showing that the expense resulted from the outage. Intoxalock said it would reimburse qualifying direct costs, but that statement should not be treated as a guarantee that every loss or missed-work claim will be paid.
- Use roadside assistance or towing when necessary. If the vehicle cannot be started safely or legally, ask Intoxalock or the authorized service center what roadside options are available. Do not leave the vehicle in an unsafe location while waiting for a calibration appointment.
- Do not bypass or remove the IID yourself. Disconnecting, tampering with, or independently removing the device can create a violation, damage the vehicle, or conflict with a court- or state-mandated requirement. A personal breathalyzer is not a substitute for a state-approved ignition-interlock device or an authorized calibration.
A mouthpiece will not solve a calibration outage
A replacement mouthpiece may be a reasonable hygiene accessory for someone who already has a compatible IID handset, but it cannot authorize a vehicle, extend a deadline, repair a backend outage, or replace calibration. If you need one, choose a device-specific replacement mouthpiece only after confirming the exact handset model and compatibility with the manufacturer or service provider. A generic listing should not be assumed to fit an Intoxalock device or be approved for use in a state-supervised program.
Likewise, buying a consumer breathalyzer is not a workaround. It cannot transmit the required compliance record or satisfy an IID installation and calibration obligation.

The episode illustrates a less obvious connected-car risk. A vehicle does not need to be remotely steered, unlocked, or mechanically disabled for a cyberattack on a service provider to affect mobility. If a mandated device depends on a provider’s network for calibration, authorization, appointment scheduling, or compliance records, an outage in that provider’s systems can have consequences in the physical world.

Keep dry, avoid extreme temperatures. Low battery shows “OFF”. For personal reference only. Not for legal/professional use
That creates an uncomfortable responsibility gap. The driver may be legally required to maintain the device, while the driver has little ability to repair the provider’s servers or obtain an alternative authorized service on short notice. A failed calibration can therefore become a missed shift, a towing bill, a vehicle-storage charge, or a potential compliance dispute even when the driver did nothing wrong.
The incident also shows why resilience features matter for connected transportation services. Providers and regulators need clear outage procedures, state-recognized extensions, offline or fail-safe service workflows, rapid customer communication, and a way to correct compliance records after restoration. Drivers need instructions that distinguish a technical outage from a failed alcohol test and explain exactly what evidence will protect them from an unfair violation.
Could customers sue Intoxalock?
Proposed litigation has reportedly raised issues including vehicle lockouts, lost work, towing costs, contractual obligations, and possible exposure of personal information. Those cases remain unresolved in the public material reviewed. Whether a particular customer has a claim depends on the contract, state law, the terms of the relevant driving program, the documented loss, and what investigators ultimately establish about the incident.
Customers considering legal advice should preserve all records and consult a qualified attorney familiar with the state’s IID and license requirements. They should not rely on headlines claiming that a data breach or damages has already been legally established.
Bottom line
Intoxalock’s March 2026 cyberattack disrupted the backend systems that support ignition-interlock installations and calibrations. It stranded or delayed some drivers—especially those whose calibration deadlines fell during the outage—but the evidence does not show that hackers remotely shut off every equipped vehicle or compromised the devices’ breath measurements. Customers should complete any overdue service, confirm their status with the relevant state authority, retain expense records, and avoid tampering with the IID.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did the Intoxalock cyberattack lock out every driver?
No. Intoxalock said its devices continued operating, and the public evidence points to a subset of customers—particularly those due for calibration during the outage—experiencing start delays or lockouts. There is no evidence that all approximately 150,000 annual customers were simultaneously disabled.
Was customer data stolen in the Intoxalock attack?
No confirmed data breach had been established in the public sources reviewed. Intoxalock had not confirmed whether customer data was exfiltrated. A proposed class-action complaint alleged that information was stolen, but those allegations remain unproven.
What should I do if my ignition interlock will not let my car start?
Do not disconnect, bypass, tamper with, or remove the device yourself. Contact the authorized service center, Intoxalock, and the state motor-vehicle, probation, or court authority supervising your IID requirement. Ask about an eligible extension and keep records of appointments and expenses.
Can a personal breathalyzer or replacement mouthpiece replace an IID calibration?
No. A consumer breathalyzer cannot replace a state-approved IID, complete a required calibration, or update the compliance record. A replacement mouthpiece may help with hygiene only if it is confirmed compatible with the exact device model.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Bottom line: This was a service-provider cyberattack with real mobility and compliance consequences, not a confirmed nationwide remote shutdown of Intoxalock vehicles. If your calibration was affected, contact the authorized service center and your state’s supervising authority, document every cost, and do not bypass the device.
