The Rivian R2 has the ingredients of a compelling electric SUV: five seats, useful cargo space, available all-wheel-drive performance and a manufacturer-estimated range of up to 330 miles on the trims currently listed. The headline-grabbing 3.6-second 0–60 mph figure belongs specifically to the Performance trim, however, and an independent Edmunds range test fell short of the EPA estimate. Whether the R2 is the better choice over a Tesla Model Y depends on what you value most.
What the R2 first drive tells us—and what it does not
InsideEVs published a first-drive review of the 2027 Rivian R2 Performance with Launch Package under the title “I Had High Expectations For The Rivian R2. It Still Blew Me Away.” Its indexed result says the drive included on-road and off-road evaluation and reports a 0–60 mph time of 3.6 seconds. The full review is not available here, so that headline and snippet are not enough to describe the reviewer’s specific impressions or explain how the vehicle behaved on either surface. The 3.6-second figure is also consistent with Rivian’s published Performance specification; it should not be generalized to every R2 trim.
For the broader picture, Rivian’s US product page provides the manufacturer’s current specifications, while an Associated Press article republishing an Edmunds comparison supplies an independent range-test result and a Model Y comparison.
Rivian R2 range and performance
Rivian lists the Premium at an EPA-estimated 330 miles of range and 4.6 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. Its Performance trim is also listed at 330 miles, with a 3.6-second 0–60 mph time. These are Rivian’s current figures for those specific trims, not results from a single independent test: Rivian R2 specifications.

Edmunds’ R2 Performance EV Range Test covered 304 miles, compared with the 330-mile EPA estimate. That is Edmunds’ test result, not a revised official rating. The difference is useful context for planning, but one test does not establish the range every driver will achieve; conditions and driving patterns matter.
Rivian R2 charging
Rivian says every R2 has a NACS charge port. The company advertises up to 150 miles added in 15 minutes under optimal conditions, and a 10%–80% charge in under 30 minutes on a DC fast charger. Rivian cautions that actual charging speed varies, so these are company claims rather than guaranteed stops on every route. See Rivian’s charging information.

In the Edmunds comparison republished by the Associated Press, the Model Y charged slightly quicker than the R2. That comparison does not make the two vehicles’ charging times identical across every charger or condition, but it is a relevant point for buyers who frequently rely on public fast charging. The comparison is at Associated Press/Edmunds.
Space, seating and towing
Rivian describes the R2 as a five-seat, two-row midsize SUV. Its current product page lists 90.1 cubic feet of total storage and a 28.7-cubic-foot rear cargo area. The figures describe different measures of space, so the total-storage number should not be mistaken for the size of the rear cargo area alone. Rivian also lists a maximum towing capacity of 4,400 pounds when equipped with the Tow Package: Rivian R2 specifications.

Edmunds’ comparison finds the R2 stronger on cargo utility and towing than the Model Y, and notes more rear headroom in the Rivian. The Tesla, by contrast, has an optional third row; the R2 is a five-seater. If a third row is essential, the R2 does not meet that requirement. If you want towing capacity and flexible cargo space, the comparison gives the Rivian the advantage on those points.
Rivian R2 vs. Tesla Model Y: which is the better buy?
There is no universal winner in the Edmunds comparison. Its assessment portrays the R2 as more capable and premium-feeling, with advantages in cargo capacity, towing and rear headroom. It describes the Model Y as smoother over bumps and notes that it can be configured with an optional third row. Edmunds also reports that the Tesla charged slightly quicker. Those are the comparison’s judgments and findings, not guarantees about every trim, road or passenger’s preferences.
