It could be—if you value performance, a premium cabin and hatchback practicality over the certainty of buying new. Mat Watson’s 3 October 2026 example is a 2023 BMW i4 eDrive40 M Sport with 31,000 miles listed at £27,990, described as around the price of a new Jaecoo E5. That is one dated listing, not a live quote or a used-i4 market average, and the featured BMW’s three-year vehicle warranty has expired.
What does the BMW i4 cost in this comparison?
Carwow’s article dated 3 October 2026 identifies a 2023 BMW i4 eDrive40 M Sport with 31,000 miles at £27,990. It presents that example as costing around the same as a new Jaecoo E5. What do you get with the i4 eDrive40 M Sport?
BMW UK lists the eDrive40 M Sport with up to 370 miles of WLTP range, 0–62 mph acceleration in 5.6 seconds and luggage capacity of 470–1,290 litres. These are manufacturer specifications, not a promise of real-world range or a guarantee that every used example has identical equipment. Actual driving distance varies with conditions and use.

The i4’s hatchback layout gives access to a useful boot: BMW lists 470 litres with the rear seats in use, expanding to 1,290 litres when folded. There is no front boot. The format is more practical for loading bulky items than a conventional saloon opening, but check that the capacity and shape suit your regular luggage.
How does it feel to drive, and where does it compromise?
In his review of the featured car, Mat Watson describes a plush-feeling cabin, a composed motorway ride and enjoyable handling. Those are reviewer impressions rather than measured comparisons with the Jaecoo E5. The i4’s quoted 5.6-second 0–62 mph time does establish that this version is brisk on paper.

The same review identifies tight rear headroom, average rear legroom and awkward access when fitting a child seat. If adults or children regularly travel in the back, take them along to view the car and try your child seat in place. A test drive should also include the roads you use most, so you can assess ride comfort and visibility for yourself.
What warranty would a used i4 have?
BMW UK states that a new vehicle has a three-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty. Its high-voltage battery warranty can run for up to eight years or 100,000 miles from first registration, whichever comes first. The featured 2023 car’s three-year vehicle warranty is described as expired; the battery cover may still have time or mileage remaining, but its status depends on the car’s first-registration date, odometer and applicable terms. Ask BMW or the seller to confirm the cover in writing for the specific vehicle.

What to check before choosing the BMW
- Condition and history: inspect service records, accident history, mileage consistency, tyres and general wear. A 31,000-mile listing does not establish how the car has been maintained.
- Battery and charging: request battery-health information and clarify any remaining battery warranty. Consider whether the car’s condition and your access to charging suit your routine; the WLTP figure is not a real-world range guarantee.
- Written cover: confirm the remaining vehicle and battery warranty against the first-registration date and current mileage. Do not treat a battery warranty as equivalent to a comprehensive vehicle warranty.
- Practical fit: test rear-seat space, child-seat access and boot loading with your usual passengers and luggage.
- Like-for-like price: compare the BMW’s current drive-away cost and condition with a written quote for the exact new Jaecoo E5 trim, including its equipment and warranty terms.
- Availability: verify that the used BMW listing remains live and establish delivery timing for both cars before making a decision.
Which should you buy?
Choose the used i4 if the particular car checks out and you want the BMW’s brisk performance, premium-cabin feel, composed motorway manners and accessible hatchback boot. Choose the new E5 if buying new, avoiding this example’s used-car condition uncertainty and retaining new-car warranty cover matter more to you. The price comparison is only meaningful once both cars’ current prices, specifications and written warranty terms are confirmed.
