How to use wireless Android Auto

Wireless Android Auto needs more than Bluetooth: learn the compatibility requirements, first-time pairing steps, reconnection process, and practical fixes when it will not launch.

Wireless Android Auto connects your Android phone to a compatible car or stereo without a USB cable. The first connection still uses Bluetooth to pair the devices, but Android Auto also relies on Wi-Fi for the wireless projection link. That is why a phone can pair successfully for calls and music yet fail to launch Android Auto.

Check compatibility before pairing

Wireless Android Auto needs compatible hardware on both sides. Your phone should meet these requirements:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Android 11 or newer
  • 5 GHz Wi-Fi support
  • An active mobile-data plan and mobile-data coverage
  • Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup

Your vehicle or aftermarket stereo must specifically support wireless Android Auto. Bluetooth, a USB port, or wired Android Auto alone does not prove that wireless projection is available. Check the vehicle manufacturer’s information for the exact model year, trim, and infotainment system. Aftermarket receivers may also need current firmware.

Android Auto is built into most current Android phones. On Android 10 and newer, you generally do not need to install a separate Android Auto app from Google Play, and it may not appear as a normal app in the app drawer. Android Auto is not available on Android Go devices.

Set up wireless Android Auto for the first time

  1. Put the vehicle in Park. Turn on the ignition and infotainment system.
  2. Enable the required phone connections. Open Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on. Also turn on Wi-Fi and Location Services.
  3. Open the vehicle’s pairing mode. In many vehicles, you do this by pressing and holding the steering-wheel voice-command button. Some cars use an infotainment menu instead, so follow the vehicle manual if that button does not start pairing.
  4. Select the vehicle on the phone. When the car appears in the Bluetooth device list, tap it and confirm the pairing code shown on both screens.
  5. Approve Android Auto prompts. Accept the requested permissions on the phone and vehicle display. The phone may ask to update Android Auto or related system components.
  6. Launch Android Auto if necessary. It should open within a few seconds after Bluetooth pairing. If it does not, tap Android Auto on the car’s display.

Bluetooth handles the initial discovery and pairing. It is not the complete wireless Android Auto connection. Wi-Fi must remain enabled so the phone can establish the higher-bandwidth projection link.

Connect on later drives

  1. Start the car and leave the infotainment system switched on.
  2. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled on the phone.
  3. Wait several seconds for the previously paired phone to connect.
  4. If the Android Auto interface does not appear, select Android Auto on the vehicle display.

You normally do not need to open Android Auto on the phone. Once the car and phone recognize each other, Android Auto is designed to start through the vehicle connection.

Remove an old car connection

If the phone keeps trying to connect to the wrong vehicle, or a previously working connection has become unreliable, clear the saved Android Auto vehicles and pair again. On phones that use the standard Android settings layout, go to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto > Previously connected cars

Then:

  1. Unplug the phone if it is connected by USB.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Forget all cars.
  4. Delete the phone from the vehicle’s saved Bluetooth devices as well, if the car provides that option.
  5. Repeat the wireless pairing process.

Menu names vary between Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola, and other Android phones. If you cannot find the menu, search the Settings app for Android Auto or Previously connected cars.

Fix wireless Android Auto when it will not start

The phone pairs over Bluetooth, but Android Auto does not appear

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Confirm that the car supports wireless Android Auto rather than only Bluetooth or wired Android Auto.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi and Location Services. Bluetooth alone is not enough.
  3. Check that the phone has mobile-data service.
  4. Put the vehicle in Park and restart the infotainment system.
  5. Look for an Android Auto button on the car display and tap it manually.
  6. Forget the saved car on the phone and in the vehicle, then pair the devices again.

Wireless Android Auto worked before but stopped

Restart the vehicle’s infotainment system first. Then check for available Android and Google system updates on the phone. If the car is fitted with an aftermarket Pioneer or Kenwood receiver, check the manufacturer’s support page for a firmware update.

If that does not help, clear the saved vehicles using Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto > Previously connected cars > Forget all cars. Remove the phone from the car’s Bluetooth list too, then complete a fresh pairing.

The phone cannot find the car

The car must be actively waiting for a new phone. Put the infotainment system into its new-phone pairing mode. Google’s general procedure is to press and hold the steering-wheel voice-command button, but the exact process is vehicle-specific. If nothing happens, use the vehicle manual rather than repeatedly scanning from the phone.

Android Auto is missing from the app drawer

This is usually normal on newer Android phones. Android Auto is integrated into the operating system and is intended to launch when a compatible car connection is established. Search the phone’s Settings app for Android Auto to open its configuration options.

Wireless Android Auto misconceptions

Claim What is actually true
Any Android 11 phone works wirelessly with any Android Auto car. Android 11 is only a phone-side baseline. The phone also needs 5 GHz Wi-Fi and active data, and the car must support wireless Android Auto.
Bluetooth alone is wireless Android Auto. Bluetooth starts the pairing process, while Wi-Fi is also required for wireless projection.
Android Auto must be downloaded from Google Play. On Android 10 and newer, it is generally built into the phone rather than installed as a separate car-mode app.
Any car with a USB port supports wireless Android Auto. A USB port may provide charging or wired Android Auto only. Wireless support must be confirmed separately.
Successful Bluetooth pairing means setup is complete. Bluetooth can work while Android Auto fails because Wi-Fi is off, mobile data is unavailable, the car supports only wired Android Auto, or the infotainment system needs an update or restart.

Spedal 2026 2-in-1 Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto Adapter | Ultra Mini Dongle, Converts Wired to Wireless, WiFi 6 & Bluetooth 5.4, Plug & Play, Low Latency, Auto Reconnect
  • Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket: Turn factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto into a wireless setup and keep using your car’s original screen. This 2-in-1 wireless adapter is ideal for households with both iPhone and Android phones sharing a vehicle. Connects to one phone at a time; disconnect the current phone before connecting another.
  • Plug and Play for Everyday Drives: Just plug the adapter into your car’s USB data port and pair your phone via Bluetooth. After the initial setup, it reconnects automatically on later drives, so you can skip the usual plug-and-unplug routine—whether it’s your morning commute or a quick errand. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
  • Less Clutter Around the Console: A compact wireless adapter that helps reduce phone cable clutter running across your console every time you drive. The mini dongle takes up little space and includes two extension cables for USB-A and USB-C data ports, making the adapter easier to position around recessed or hard-to-reach ports.
  • Your Usual Apps, Now Wireless: Follow your route, put on a playlist, take a call, or use voice commands through CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth 5.4 handles pairing, while Wi-Fi 6 carries the wireless connection. Works with your car’s supported steering wheel, knob, and touchscreen controls, with fewer phone cables to manage.
  • Check the Fit Before You Buy: Your car needs factory wired CarPlay for a compatible iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or factory wired Android Auto for a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or later. Connect your phone with a USB data cable first to check that the matching system works. Not for BMW, Tesla, or aftermarket head units. Video playback, screen mirroring are not supported.

Why does Bluetooth connect but Android Auto not work?

Bluetooth is only part of the wireless setup. Turn on Wi-Fi and Location Services, confirm mobile-data coverage, check that the car supports wireless rather than wired Android Auto, and restart the infotainment system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to open Android Auto on my phone every time?

Normally, no. After the first pairing, Android Auto should start when the compatible car and phone connect. You can select Android Auto manually on the vehicle display if it does not open.

How do I reset wireless Android Auto?

On many phones, go to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto > Previously connected cars, choose the three-dot menu, and tap Forget all cars. Also remove the phone from the car’s Bluetooth list before pairing again.

The Bottom Line

To use wireless Android Auto, both the phone and the vehicle must support it. Enable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Location Services, and mobile data; pair the phone through the car’s Bluetooth setup; then approve Android Auto’s prompts. If pairing succeeds but projection does not, the most likely causes are unsupported wireless hardware, disabled Wi-Fi, stale saved connections, or outdated infotainment firmware.
