Your Kia’s reversing camera—called Rear View Monitor (RVM) in Kia manuals—shows part of the area behind the vehicle to help with parking and reversing. It is an aid, not a substitute for checking around the car and using your mirrors: the camera may not show the whole area, and the screen image may not represent an object’s actual distance. Keep the lens clear, reverse slowly, and consult your vehicle’s manual or an authorized Kia service provider if the display behaves abnormally.
What your Kia reversing camera does
On equipped vehicles, Rear View Monitor displays a view of the area behind the vehicle to assist with parking or reversing. Kia’s infotainment instructions for the European-market DA_GEN2_V system say that selecting R (Reverse) while the engine is running automatically displays the rear view and parking guides. Equipment, display behavior, labels, and controls differ by model, trim, market, and infotainment system, so use the owner’s manual and infotainment manual for your specific Kia rather than assuming every vehicle works the same way. Kia owner manuals and Kia infotainment manuals provide vehicle- and system-specific instructions.
How to reverse safely with the camera
Kia’s 2024 NQ5 owner manual warns: “The rear view camera does not cover the complete area behind the vehicle. The driver should always check the rear area directly through the inside and outside rear view mirror before parking or Reversing.” It also says: “The image shown on the screen may differ from the actual distance of the object.” Treat the screen as one source of information, not a complete or precisely scaled view.
- Check before moving. Look around the vehicle directly and check the inside and outside mirrors. Do not assume the camera shows everything behind the car.
- Reverse slowly. Keep watching the surroundings as well as the screen and mirrors. Kia’s infotainment guidance says not to rely solely on the camera and to stop immediately if you suspect a person—especially a child—may be behind the vehicle.
- Stop if you are unsure. If you cannot confirm that the way is clear, stop and check the area directly before continuing.
How to keep the camera lens clear
Dirt and other foreign material on the lens can affect camera performance. Kia advises keeping the lens clean and warns that harsh chemical solvents—including strong detergents with high alkaline content or volatile organic solvents—may damage it. The cited Kia parking-assist manual recommends mild soap or neutral detergent followed by a thorough water rinse, and warns against directing a high-pressure washer at the camera or nearby sensors. Cleaning instructions can differ by vehicle; check your Kia’s own manual, avoid harsh products, and do not aim a pressure washer at the camera.

What to do if the screen flickers or the image looks wrong
Kia’s 2024 NQ5 manual recommends inspection by an authorized Kia dealer if Rear View Monitor is not working properly, the screen flickers, or the camera image does not display normally. The manual identifies these as reasons for inspection; it does not establish that a particular symptom, including a blank or abnormal-colored image, always means the camera itself has failed.
- Make a safe, basic check. When the vehicle is safely parked, check whether foreign material is covering the camera lens and clean it in line with the vehicle’s manual.
- Check the correct instructions. Consult the owner’s manual and infotainment manual for your Kia’s model year, trim, market, and system. A display or control found on one Kia may not be present on another.
- Arrange an inspection if the problem persists. If the image remains abnormal, flickers, or does not appear normally, contact an authorized Kia dealer or service partner. The cited manuals support inspection, not a universal DIY reset or a diagnosis that the camera must be replaced.
How camera problems can affect parking assistance
Some Kias are equipped with Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist. In the Kia manual covering that feature, camera blockage or damage may affect camera performance and the assistance system; the manual also describes other operating limitations. The feature and its exact conditions are vehicle-specific. Keep the camera and rear ultrasonic sensors clear, and consult the manual for the equipped system. Do not treat parking assistance as a replacement for checking the area yourself. Kia’s owner-manual pages describe the relevant equipment and limitations for covered vehicles.

When a replacement camera may be appropriate
A replacement is a consideration only if inspection confirms that the camera component needs replacing. No single camera part number or cross-model fitment is established here, and a generic camera should not be assumed to work with a Kia’s factory display or related assistance functions. Before buying a replacement, have the fault and required component confirmed, then verify compatibility for the exact model, year, trim, market, factory display, and any applicable driver-assistance system.
