How to Start Your Car When the Key Fob Battery Is Dead

Many push-button cars can read a weak or dead key fob at close range, but the backup location and procedure vary. Check your owner’s manual, follow its brake and gear instructions, then replace the fob battery with the verified type.

If your push-button car won’t recognize a key fob with a dead battery, use the vehicle’s model-specific backup-start procedure. Many cars can read the fob at very close range: you may need to touch it to the Start/Stop button or place it in a designated backup spot. The location and fob orientation vary, so check the owner’s manual for your exact make, model, year, market, and trim before trying a procedure.

Start the car using its backup procedure

  1. Secure the vehicle and check the manual. Look for a section called “backup start,” “emergency starting,” or similar. Follow its gear-position and brake-pedal instructions; many procedures require the car to be in Park and your foot on the brake.
  2. Put the fob where the manual specifies. Depending on the vehicle, you may need to press the fob against the Start/Stop button in a particular orientation, align part of it with the button, or place it in a marked slot or console location.
  3. Watch for the specified indicator, if any. Some procedures use a light on the start button to signal when the car can read the fob. Follow the manual’s next step rather than assuming the same indicator behavior applies to every vehicle.
  4. Start the vehicle as directed. Keep your foot on the brake if required and use the Start/Stop button according to the manual.

These are common types of backup method, not interchangeable instructions for every car. For example, a 2026 Hyundai U.S. owner’s manual directs the driver to press the Start/Stop button with the smart key oriented as illustrated; its normal start procedure calls for Park and the brake. The 2026 Kia U.S. owner’s manual says to press the ENGINE START/STOP button directly with the smart key, with the fob contacting it at a right angle. Hyundai’s 2026 owner’s manual and Kia’s 2026 U.S. owner’s manual apply to their respective vehicles, not other makes or model years.

Backup-start locations differ by vehicle

The examples below show why it is important to use the manual for your own car. A location that works in one vehicle may not work in another.

Vehicle and manual Fob placement or orientation Other instructions or clues
Hyundai, 2026 U.S. owner’s manual Press the Start/Stop button with the smart key oriented as shown in the manual. Normal starting calls for Park and the brake pedal.
Mazda6, 2021 owner’s manual Keep the brake depressed. When the green start-button indicator flashes, align the center of the transmitter emblem with the center of the button; press the button when the green indicator turns on. The manual identifies a sequence of indicator changes for this method.
Ford Puma, 2026 manual, first-printing edition dated 2025-07 Place the remote in the instrument-panel backup position. Hold the brake, then press the start button. Ford warns that a depleted 12-volt battery can also prevent starting.
Kia, 2026 U.S. owner’s manual Press the ENGINE START/STOP button directly with the smart key; the fob contacts the button at a right angle. Follow the vehicle’s starting instructions.
GMC Yukon XL, 2022 quick-reference manual Place the weak-battery fob in the left center-console cupholder. The manual says to replace the fob battery as soon as possible.

Consult the relevant 2021 Mazda6 manual, 2026 Ford Puma manual, 2022 GMC Yukon XL quick-reference manual, or your own vehicle’s manual for its full instructions.

If the fob still is not recognized

A dead fob battery is not the only possible cause. Try the exact placement and sequence in the manual, and check whether anything nearby could be interfering with the signal. Mazda warns that nearby metal, other immobilizer keys, and some electronic devices can interfere with signal reception during its backup-start procedure. Ford notes that a discharged vehicle 12-volt battery may prevent starting even when you use the remote’s backup position.

  • Move other electronic devices, metal objects, or additional keys away from the fob and the designated reading area.
  • Recheck that the vehicle is in the required gear and that you are pressing the brake as instructed.
  • If the specified procedure still fails, consult the vehicle’s troubleshooting guidance or contact roadside assistance or an authorized dealer. A fob fault, signal interference, or a problem with the vehicle’s 12-volt battery may need attention.

Do not try to push- or tow-start the car as a generic workaround. Hyundai’s owner’s manual explicitly warns against pushing or towing the vehicle to start it.

Replace the fob battery after you start

Replace the weak or dead battery as soon as you can, and verify the correct battery type against the old battery or the owner’s manual. Battery sizes are not universal; the 2022 GMC Yukon XL quick-reference manual advises replacing the battery promptly but does not establish one size for every key fob.
