The 20-minute drive reported by Ars Technica on January 5, 2026 was an encouraging press demo—not proof of autonomous driving or a controlled safety test.
What happened in the San Francisco demonstration?
Ars Technica reporter Jonathan M. Gitlin watched from the passenger seat while a Mercedes engineer drove a CLA through downtown San Francisco. On that particular route, entering a destination helped the car anticipate which lanes it would need. The system recognized stop signs and traffic lights, slowed for speed bumps, and handled construction zones and a double-parked car.
The engineer did not intervene during the reported 20-minute drive. That observation applies only to this demonstration; it does not establish how the system performs across other routes, conditions, or drivers. Gitlin also noted that some colleagues’ demonstrations apparently confused the system when human crosswalk attendants carried stop signs.
What the car did—and where its caution may matter
In the observed drive, the CLA traveled at safe and legal speeds and came to a full stop at stop signs. That restraint is useful, but it may also frustrate drivers behind a car that waits conservatively. The report describes behavior on one press route, not a repeatable performance rate or independent safety validation.

The existing CLA Drive Assist suite also allows a driver to apply light brake pressure while adaptive cruise control is active without canceling the feature: the car slows and then resumes its previous set speed.
How Mercedes describes the driving technology
Ars Technica describes the CLA as a software-defined vehicle with four computers running its electronics, including an Nvidia Orin computer for tasks such as perception and path planning. The report characterizes the driving stack as combining different, redundant sensor types with an end-to-end AI model and a rules-based safety guardrail intended to catch an erroneous AI trajectory before the vehicle follows it. These are descriptions in the report, not independently verified architecture specifications.

Mercedes chief software officer Magnus Östberg told Ars: “We completely elevated our autonomous driving stack. It is no longer on a rule-based stack,” The article also reproduces his explanation of the end-to-end model’s advantages for parking and lane-following; that longer quotation should be read in its original context.
“Hands off” does not mean unsupervised
The human behind the wheel remains in charge. Mercedes-Benz USA describes MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO as a supervised feature for highway and city driving and warns that the driver must stay attentive and retain control. Its description says: “At the touch of a button and with driver supervision, the vehicle can now navigate both highway and city streets—from parking lot to destination.”

Gitlin informally calls the system “level 2 ++” while contrasting it with tightly geofenced Level 2 assistance and Mercedes Drive Pilot Level 3. “Level 2++” is not a formal SAE classification, and the shorthand does not change the driver’s responsibility. The headline’s “hands off” should not be read as permission to stop monitoring the car.

The January 2026 Ars report said the feature had launched in China and forecast US availability later in 2026; that forecast is not confirmation of a completed US launch. Mercedes-Benz USA’s driver-assistance page currently labels MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO “Coming soon” and says it adds Driving Assist City Pro and stop-sign and traffic-light assistance. The company’s April 29, 2026 release lists MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO as a Digital Extra for the 2027 CLA Electric, but the reviewed official materials do not state a customer activation date or feature price. Europe would require regulatory changes, according to the Ars report.
Mercedes-Benz USA announced these US vehicle MSRPs for the 2027 CLA Electric; they are not prices for MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO:

What this demonstration establishes
It shows that Mercedes’ supervised assistance could manage several ordinary but challenging urban situations during one reported drive, while also illustrating that unusual human behavior at a crosswalk could confuse some runs. It does not establish an intervention rate, safety record, or ability to operate without a responsible driver. For US buyers, the feature is described as coming soon in Mercedes-Benz USA’s current materials, with no confirmed customer activation date or published package price there.
