Toyota announced a $1.4 billion investment at its Princeton, Indiana, plant on April 25, 2024, to prepare for assembly of an unnamed all-new three-row battery-electric SUV. The plan included plant infrastructure and a battery-pack assembly line. Toyota later announced a three-row Highlander BEV for production in Kentucky, while its March 2026 Indiana investment was for Grand Highlander capacity. Toyota’s reviewed announcements do not say what ultimately happened to the original, unnamed Indiana BEV plan.
What Toyota announced for Indiana in 2024
Toyota’s April 25, 2024 announcement assigned $1.4 billion to its Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana facility in Princeton. The investment was intended to prepare the plant to assemble an all-new three-row battery-electric SUV. Toyota described plant infrastructure work and a battery-pack assembly line, with lithium-ion batteries supplied by Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina. Toyota’s announcement did not name the SUV.
Toyota said the Indiana investment would bring its cumulative investment in the facility to $8 billion. That was the company’s stated total in 2024, not a current investment figure. Toyota also said the project would add up to 340 jobs. The Indiana Economic Development Corporation said Toyota planned to create those jobs by the end of 2025; that announcement describes a target, not confirmation that every position was filled. The state agency’s account described the resulting facility investment total as more than $8 billion.
What Toyota announced later about a three-row Highlander BEV
On February 11, 2026, Toyota announced the three-row Highlander BEV and said it would be produced at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky. The announcement identifies Kentucky as the production site for that named vehicle; it does not identify the Highlander BEV as the unnamed SUV in the 2024 Indiana announcement. Toyota’s Highlander BEV announcement provides no basis for treating the model as Indiana-built.

How the 2026 investments differ by state
Toyota’s March 24, 2026 announcement divided $1 billion between Indiana and Kentucky, with different stated purposes at each facility:
| Facility | Announced investment | Stated purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Indiana | $200 million | Increase Grand Highlander production capacity |
| Kentucky | $800 million | Prepare for BEV production and increase Camry and RAV4 capacity |
These are the allocations in Toyota’s March 2026 announcement. The Indiana amount concerns Grand Highlander capacity; the Kentucky amount includes preparation for BEV production as well as added Camry and RAV4 capacity.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
What is—and is not—established about the Indiana BEV plan
Toyota has not explicitly said in the reviewed announcements whether the unnamed 2024 Indiana BEV proposal was canceled, relocated, or otherwise revised. The later Kentucky Highlander BEV announcement and the 2026 Indiana Grand Highlander investment clarify their respective vehicle and facility plans, but do not formally resolve the earlier proposal.
Toyota’s North American facility profile, as of May 8, 2026, lists Grand Highlander, Highlander, Sienna HEV, and Lexus TX at Indiana; it does not list a BEV. That profile is a snapshot of listed production, not a statement that the 2024 plan was formally canceled.

The battery connection Toyota described
For the 2024 Indiana project, Toyota said the plant’s battery-pack assembly line would use lithium-ion batteries from Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina. Separately, Toyota said in November 2025 that the North Carolina facility had officially begun production and described it as a nearly $14 billion plant with up to 5,100 jobs. Those figures describe Toyota’s battery facility, not the Indiana SUV project. Toyota’s November 2025 update quoted Toyota Motor North America president and CEO Tetsuo Ogawa: “Today’s launch of Toyota’s first U.S. battery plant and additional U.S. investment up to $10 billion marks a pivotal moment in our company’s history.”
