Start the vehicle, select the windshield defrost setting as directed in the owner’s manual, and give the ice time to soften. Then clear it with a plastic scraper. Never pour hot water on frozen glass, use a metal scraper, or run frozen wipers through ice. Clear every window before driving.
How to defrost an icy windshield safely
- Prepare the car. Check that the defroster works. Before winter weather, NHTSA recommends filling the washer reservoir with high-quality winter fluid containing de-icer and replacing worn wiper blades. Keep an ice scraper in the vehicle. See NHTSA’s winter weather vehicle-preparation guidance.
- Use the vehicle’s defrost setting. Start the vehicle and select windshield defrost according to the owner’s manual. Controls and how quickly they clear glass vary by vehicle, so there is no universal wait time.
- Wait for the ice to loosen, then scrape. Let the defroster run until the ice begins to soften. Use a plastic scraper to remove it; keep the scraper away from the wiper blades. A soft-bristle brush is useful for snow, while a rubber squeegee may help with loosened ice. AAA’s windshield de-icing guidance recommends a plastic scraper rather than metal.
- Clear all the glass. Remove snow and ice from every window so you have an unobstructed view before driving. Do not leave only a small viewing hole.
What not to do
- Do not pour hot water on the windshield. The sudden temperature change can cause thermal shock and crack the glass. AAA explains the risk in its de-icing advice.
- Do not scrape with metal. Metal tools may scratch the glass and damage wiper blades. Use a plastic scraper instead.
- Do not force frozen wipers to clear ice. Running them through ice can damage the rubber, and pulling a blade free from frozen glass can tear it. General Motors’ March 2025 cold-weather bulletin says to use the defroster or clear the glass manually rather than using wipers to wear through frost or remove snow and ice. Follow the owner’s manual if moving the wipers to a service position; that position may help keep them out of the scraper’s path on some vehicles.
- Avoid blasting the glass with very hot air. AAA Northway cautions against directing “mega-hot” defroster air at a frosted windshield. Use the vehicle’s normal defrost controls and follow its manual; the available guidance does not establish one correct temperature setting for every car.
Optional aids and winter preparation
A commercial glass de-icer can help with frost or ice, but it is an aid—not a replacement for clearing the entire windshield. Follow the product label. Some de-icers may contain ethylene glycol, which is hazardous to pets if swallowed, so keep products away from children and animals. A commercial de-icer is one option described by AAA.
A windshield cover can reduce buildup when snow is expected, but it will not remove ice that has already formed. Homemade vinegar or alcohol treatments are not necessary for the basic routine; AAA notes concerns about liquid left on glass and about these treatments removing vehicle wax over time in its windshield de-icing article.
For broader winter driving context, NHTSA reports that 320 fatal crashes and an estimated 22,293 injury crashes occurred in snow or sleet conditions in 2023.
