A car that pulls to one side has a symptom, not a diagnosis. Uneven tire pressure or tire damage is a sensible first check, but alignment, brakes, suspension, road slope, and wind can also affect how a car tracks. Check the tires first, note when the pull happens, and arrange an inspection if it persists or affects braking or steering.
Start with the tires
On a safe, level surface, look for visible tire damage and unusual or uneven tread wear. Then check all four tires when cold and compare their pressures with the vehicle’s tire placard or owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on a tire sidewall as the vehicle’s recommended pressure. A tire pressure gauge can help with this check; a tread depth gauge can help you compare tread wear.
AAA says a pull at steady speed may indicate an underinflated or damaged tire on the side toward which the car pulls. Low or uneven pressure can also make a vehicle drift or pull, according to a manufacturer technical bulletin hosted by NHTSA. These clues are worth checking, but they do not establish the cause in your particular car. See AAA’s tire safety and maintenance guidance and NHTSA TireWise.
Use the timing of the pull to guide the next check

Road crown, crosswinds, tire uniformity, brake drag, ride height, and cargo distribution are among the factors discussed in an NHTSA-hosted drift/pull bulletin. A separate alignment bulletin notes that road slope and tire effects can cause a pull even when alignment settings are within specification. These bulletins describe diagnostic considerations, not proof of a fault in your car.

Do not authorize an alignment as the diagnosis
Misalignment is one possible cause, but tires and brakes can cause a similar symptom. AAA advises having a qualified shop determine the cause before alignment work. If the pull remains after you check tire pressure and visible condition, ask the shop to inspect the tires, brakes, steering and suspension, and alignment. Ask for the cause they found and the alignment measurements before approving an alignment as the sole remedy.
Uneven tread wear can be associated with incorrect pressure, suspension problems, or alignment. NHTSA recommends regular tire pressure and tread checks; its TireWise guidance covers tire safety and maintenance, and AAA’s tire safety guidance also addresses tire care.

When to stop driving and get help
Stop in a safe place and arrange assistance if the pull becomes sudden or severe, you see tire damage, smell burning, see smoke, notice abnormal heat, or braking or steering is impaired. These are conservative safety cues, not a universal threshold for whether a car is safe to drive. If the symptom persists without those warning signs, have a qualified shop inspect it rather than continuing to guess at the cause.
