There is no universal rule to replace a car’s positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve every four or five years. A four-year recommendation applies to certain Ford trucks and SUVs; other vehicles specify a mileage interval or call for inspection and replacement only if needed. Check the maintenance schedule and service procedure for your exact year, make, model, and engine before buying a valve or attempting the job.
How often should you replace a PCV valve?
Follow the maintenance schedule for your vehicle and engine. The published schedules below illustrate why a four-to-five-year interval should not be treated as universal:
| Source and application | Schedule | What the instruction means |
|---|---|---|
| Haynes Manuals North America, 2020; listed Ford F-150, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator applications | Every 4 years or 60,000 miles | Application-specific recommendation; confirm it applies to your vehicle and engine. |
| Ford owner-guide text for specified engine configurations | 60,000 miles for specified 3.0L engines; 100,000 miles for specified 3.8L engines | Model- and engine-specific replacement mileages; geographic exceptions apply. |
| Chrysler, 2020 Jeep Compass owner’s manual, hosted by NHTSA | 100,000 miles or 10 years | Inspect the PCV valve and replace it if necessary, rather than automatically replacing it at that point. |
These examples are not interchangeable schedules. Look up your own maintenance table, including any severe-use conditions, and distinguish an instruction to inspect from one to replace. If the schedule is unclear, ask a qualified repair professional to check the applicable service information.
What to check before buying a replacement
Confirm the valve’s specified part number and design using the vehicle’s service information or a reliable parts catalog matched to its year, make, model, and engine. Similar-looking PCV valves can have different airflow characteristics, so appearance or a generic fit claim is not enough. The U.S. EPA’s technical publication likewise emphasizes manufacturer specifications and the exact valve part number.

A PCV service check may also involve the connecting hose and valve-cover grommet. Inspect or replace those components only as the applicable procedure directs; a cracked, deteriorated, plugged, or distorted hose or grommet may need attention alongside the valve. A vehicle-specific PCV valve should be verified against your exact application before purchase.
Why a universal replacement procedure is unsafe to assume
PCV valve location, access, design, and service requirements vary by vehicle and engine. Some procedures require removing other components to reach the valve; some specify special tools, particular inspection methods, or one-time-use parts. Subaru’s service bulletin advises technicians to consult the applicable service manual for the full repair requirements, including safety precautions, inspection criteria, tools, processes, and single-use components.

For that reason, do not treat a general online valve-swap description as a complete repair specification. Before starting, obtain the current procedure for your vehicle, and follow its directions for access, testing, fasteners, torque, safety, and any parts that must not be reused.
Example: the Haynes check for listed Ford applications
Haynes describes a specific check for the Ford F-150, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator applications covered by its guide. It is an example of a model-specific procedure, not a universal test for every car.

- Use the guide for the exact covered year and engine, and follow its safety and access instructions. For 2010-and-later models in the covered range, Haynes says the intake resonator must be removed to reach the valve.
- Start the engine and let it idle, then check for vacuum at the PCV valve as the procedure specifies.
- If there is no vacuum at the valve, check for vacuum at the hose. In this Haynes procedure, vacuum at the hose but not the valve indicates that the valve should be replaced.
- Check the valve-cover grommet for cracks or distortion, and inspect the hose for plugging, cracks, wear, or deterioration.
Do not apply this test, access method, or diagnosis to another vehicle without its own service information. The applicable manual determines the correct test, part, and repair steps.

- You cannot confirm the correct valve part number or engine application.
- The valve is difficult to reach, or removing it risks damaging a hose, grommet, or other component.
- The service procedure calls for a special tool, a specific test, a torque value, or a one-time-use part you do not have.
- Your vehicle’s maintenance schedule says to inspect the system, but you are unsure how to judge whether replacement is necessary.
In those cases, use the manufacturer’s service procedure or have a qualified technician perform the inspection. Nissan’s bulletin, for example, describes an application-specific inspection condition based on valve identification color; that is another reason not to assume one check applies to every model.
