The 600-HP Porsche 917 that could be adapted for road use was the one-off 917 KH Street—not a typical 917 race car. Porsche says the 1975 car retained its 4.9-litre engine and gained basic road equipment. The available record does not establish the route or events of the road trip suggested by this headline, so the useful answer is what made this exceptional car road-adapted, and why that does not make an ordinary 917 a touring car.
Which Porsche 917 does “600 hp” refer to?
It refers to the 917 KH Street, a single road-adapted example based on the 917 race car. Porsche describes it as a 4.9-litre car producing approximately 600 hp (609 PS), built in 1975 at the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach for Italian businessman Gregorio Rossi di Montelera, known as Count Rossi. Porsche’s account of the 917 KH Street documents this unusual conversion; it does not establish that other 917s had the same road equipment or status.
What made the 917 KH Street road-adapted?
Porsche says the KH Street received rudimentary mufflers, additional mirrors, side indicators and a horn while retaining its 4.9-litre engine. That is the extent of the road-going equipment identified in Porsche’s account. It should not be mistaken for evidence that every legal or practical requirement for driving a 917 on public roads was satisfied everywhere, or that the car was configured for ordinary touring.
Why “a Porsche 917” does not have one horsepower figure
The 917 name covers distinct racing variants with different engines, outputs and intended uses. For comparison, Porsche lists the 1973 917/30 Spyder with a 5,374 cc turbocharged 12-cylinder engine rated at 882 kW (1,200 hp)—a different car from the approximately 600 hp 917 KH Street. See Porsche’s 917/30 Spyder specifications.

Was a Porsche 917 ever road legal?
Porsche documents one 917 KH Street adapted for road use. That supports the careful answer that a road-adapted 917 existed; it does not establish a general road-legal status for 917 race cars, or confirm registration and legality in any particular jurisdiction today. A single specially equipped example is not a basis for treating ordinary 917s as road cars.
What is known about the road trip?
The headline appears in Deptam’s automotive archive with a displayed date of April 29, 2025, but the archived excerpt available here does not provide the article body. The route, driver, duration, distance and any mechanical or logistical events are therefore unverified. No specific trip narrative can responsibly be supplied from that listing alone. Deptam’s automotive archive identifies the listing but does not substantiate those details.

How the 917 fits its original purpose
Porsche says it developed the 917 to pursue an overall win at Le Mans and the World Championship for Makes. The 917 KH Street’s mirrors, indicators, horn and rudimentary mufflers distinguish that one-off from the competition-focused purpose behind the model. Porsche’s 2019 exhibition announcement also says 917-001 was the first of 25 vehicles required for type approval—a historical homologation requirement, not evidence that all 917s were road-ready. Porsche’s 2019 announcement provides that context.
