How to Protect Your Car From Theft: Practical Steps for Owners

Lock and verify your car, secure every key, and choose added protection—such as a visible lock, immobilizer, or tracker—for the specific risk it addresses.

Protect your car by combining reliable habits with security measures suited to its risks: lock it and verify it locked, take every key, keep valuables out of sight, and address keyless-entry risks if your vehicle has them. A steering-wheel lock can create a visible physical barrier; an immobilizer can prevent unauthorized starting; a tracker can help locate a vehicle after theft. These measures do different jobs, and none guarantees that a car will not be stolen.

Start with the steps that help protect almost any car

Basic precautions reduce easy opportunities for theft. Make them part of every parking routine, whether you leave the car for a few minutes or overnight. They apply to conventional and keyless vehicles alike: an advanced security device cannot replace taking the key, closing the car, and checking that it locked.

  • Take the key with you. Never leave a key in or on the vehicle, including while it is running. NHTSA cautions against leaving a vehicle running unattended. A brief stop is still a time when an unattended vehicle can be taken.
  • Close the windows and lock the doors. Before walking away, check that the windows are fully closed and the doors are locked. This simple step reduces an easy opportunity to enter the vehicle.
  • Confirm it locked. Do not rely solely on pressing the remote button. Check the locks, lights, or another confirmation provided by your vehicle. Police.uk warns that electronic jamming can stop a remote-lock signal from reaching the car. If the normal confirmation does not appear, check the vehicle directly and lock it again rather than assuming the first signal worked.
  • Remove valuables from view. Take them with you or put them away before reaching your destination; visible belongings can make a vehicle a more tempting target. Do not wait until you have parked to move items if doing so would leave them on display while you are away.
  • Choose a well-lit place when practical. Consider lighting and visibility when selecting where to park. This is a practical preference, not a substitute for locking the vehicle or securing its keys.

NHTSA’s U.S. consumer alert dated July 1, 2025, reported more than 850,700 vehicles stolen in 2024 and a 17% decline in reported thefts from 2023 to 2024. Separately, NHTSA’s 2025 vehicle-theft page says more than 650,000 U.S. vehicles were stolen in 2025—one every 48 seconds. Those figures describe different years and are not competing estimates for the same period. Keep the year and U.S. geography attached to each number; the figures do not mean that theft risk is the same for every car or location. See NHTSA’s July 2025 consumer alert and its Vehicle Theft Prevention guidance.

NHTSA Chief Counsel Peter Simshauser said vehicle theft “costs Americans billions every year,” noting that costs include higher insurance premiums and resources used to investigate and prosecute crimes. In the same statement, he encouraged simple steps to help keep vehicles from joining the hundreds of thousands stolen each year. The practical implication for an owner is not that one product eliminates the risk, but that everyday precautions and suitable additional measures can reduce opportunities.

Reduce the risk of keyless relay theft

In a relay theft, thieves can use equipment to relay a keyless fob’s signal so a vehicle behaves as though the key is nearby. This is different from taking a key left inside the car: the fob may be indoors while the vehicle is outside. Police.uk calls this “keyless car theft or ‘relay theft’”; the Police.uk vehicle-theft guidance and PSNI keyless-theft guidance describe practical precautions. These are UK and Northern Ireland police sources, so their terminology is useful, while any product-approval guidance should be checked against local requirements.

These precautions are most relevant if your vehicle uses a fob that communicates wirelessly for keyless entry or starting. If you are unsure what kind of system the vehicle has, check the owner’s manual or ask the manufacturer. Do not assume that every vehicle or fob behaves identically.

Keep fobs away from the car

At home, store the main fob and any spare away from the vehicle and away from doors and windows. This adds distance between the fob and someone outside trying to detect or relay its signal. A spare key deserves the same care as the daily-use fob: leaving the spare near the car can undermine the care taken with the main one.

Choose a consistent storage place that is not immediately beside the exterior of the home or a window. The guidance recommends distance from the vehicle, doors, and windows; it does not establish one universally effective room or storage location for every house and vehicle. Follow vehicle-specific guidance if the manufacturer recommends a particular approach.

Use a signal-blocking pouch only if it works

A screened or signal-blocking pouch can help prevent a fob signal from being detected, but its performance can change with wear or damage. Test it periodically using the method recommended by the pouch maker or your vehicle’s instructions; do not assume an old pouch still blocks the signal. If the pouch no longer works as intended, replace it or use another manufacturer-recommended precaution. A pouch is an extra layer for the fob, not a replacement for locking the car, taking the key, or securing spare keys.

Some fobs allow wireless signals to be switched off. Check the vehicle or fob manual before using that option. Do not infer that your fob has this feature from another model’s instructions, or disable a function without understanding how to restore it when needed.

Check vehicle-specific advice

Keyless systems differ by vehicle, so consult the owner’s manual or manufacturer for model-specific security settings and recommendations. Do not assume every fob can be disabled or that one storage method fits every system. If you are considering an installed security upgrade, ask the dealer, vehicle manufacturer, or a qualified installer which options are approved and compatible with your model.

Choose extra security by the job it does

Security devices are not interchangeable. First identify whether you want to deter physical access, frustrate unauthorized starting, address a keyless signal risk, or help recover the vehicle if it is stolen. A device may contribute to one of those goals without addressing the others. For example, a tracker can help locate a stolen car, but it does not itself prevent someone from entering or starting it.

Measure What it does What to check
Steering-wheel, pedal, or gear-stick lock Creates a visible physical barrier that may deter or delay an attempt to drive away. Choose a device that fits the vehicle and look for a credible security rating. Police.uk discusses security-rated locks; ratings and approval schemes can be country-specific. Check fit and whether the device is practical to use consistently.
Immobilizer Prevents the engine from starting without an authorized key or other authorized process. Ask the vehicle manufacturer, dealer, or a qualified installer about approved and compatible options for the specific model. Do not choose an installed system based only on a generic claim that it works for all cars.
Signal-blocking fob pouch Blocks a keyless fob’s wireless signal when the fob is enclosed, if the pouch is effective and intact. Check fit and test it periodically; it does not replace locking the car or securing spare keys. It is relevant to keyless fobs, not a universal solution for every theft risk.
Vehicle tracker Can help locate a vehicle after it has been stolen. Check vehicle compatibility, installation, and any continuing service requirements. A tracker aids recovery; it does not itself prevent access or starting.
Lockable diagnostic-port cover Adds a barrier at a vehicle’s diagnostic port where relevant. Ask the manufacturer or a qualified installer whether the vehicle has a relevant port and whether a cover is appropriate for that model. Police.uk raises this as a vehicle-specific consideration, not a universal fit.

The categories above describe different purposes, not a guarantee of effectiveness on a particular vehicle. NHTSA’s theft-prevention guidance covers prevention and recovery measures; Police.uk discusses physical locks and diagnostic-port considerations. Neither source ranks named consumer products. There is no basis in these sources for naming one model as best for every owner, so compare products against the risk, fit, rating, installation, and service needs that matter to you.

Decide whether an added device makes sense

Match the measure to the risk and your vehicle rather than buying a device because it appears comprehensive. A visible lock may be useful when a physical deterrent is your priority; a signal-blocking pouch is most relevant to owners with keyless fobs; a tracker is relevant when recovery assistance is the goal. For installed immobilizers or diagnostic-port protection, consult the manufacturer or an appropriately qualified installer before choosing a system.

  • Confirm compatibility. Verify that a device fits the vehicle and, for keyless products, the fob. For installed systems, confirm model-specific compatibility before purchase or installation. Ask the supplier or installer to identify any limitations for your make and model.
  • Consider the installation burden. A portable lock or pouch is used by the owner; an installed immobilizer or tracker may require professional fitting. Confirm what installation entails with the provider. A product that is difficult to use or is not fitted as intended may not serve its purpose.
  • Check ongoing obligations. A tracker may require an ongoing service. Establish any service, subscription, or maintenance requirements before buying. The available information does not provide universal prices or fees, so ask for the actual purchase, fitting, and continuing costs for the product and vehicle you are considering.
  • Evaluate independent ratings where available. A credible security rating can help assess a physical lock, but do not assume a rating or scheme applies in every country. Police.uk’s references to security-rated products reflect UK guidance, not a universal approval standard. Verify what the rating covers and whether it is relevant where you live.
  • Do not confuse appearance with protection. A device’s visibility or marketing does not establish how well it suits your vehicle or the threat you want to address. A steering-wheel lock is a visible barrier; an immobilizer addresses starting; a tracker assists with locating. Compare like with like.

When comparing options, ask four practical questions: What risk does this address—signal relay, physical access, unauthorized starting, or locating the vehicle after theft? Is it compatible with this vehicle and fob? Does it have an independent security rating where one is relevant and available? What do installation and any continuing service require? These questions make the comparison more useful than a generic “best car security device” list, especially because the reviewed sources do not test or rank named products.

For U.S. owners, NHTSA is the relevant source here for national theft-prevention guidance and U.S. figures. Police.uk and PSNI guidance comes from the UK and Northern Ireland; local ratings, approval schemes, insurance rules, and product availability may differ elsewhere. Do not assume that a police recommendation or security rating from one jurisdiction automatically transfers to another.

Make a simple routine and revisit it when circumstances change

  1. Before leaving, take the key or fob, close the windows, and lock the car. Do not leave it running unattended.
  2. Confirm the locks or another vehicle-provided indicator show that it actually locked. If the remote signal may have been jammed, check the vehicle rather than assuming.
  3. Remove valuables from view and, when practical, park somewhere well lit.
  4. If the car is keyless, put the fob and spare away from the vehicle and doors or windows; use and periodically test a signal-blocking pouch if appropriate.
  5. If you add a device, confirm what risk it addresses, that it is compatible, and whether installation or continuing service is required.

Recheck your approach if you change vehicles, keys, parking arrangements, or installed security equipment. A new keyless vehicle may call for different fob precautions; a new tracker or immobilizer may bring installation or service requirements. For model-specific recommendations, ask the vehicle manufacturer or a qualified installer. NHTSA’s summer vehicle-security reminder also directs owners toward manufacturer guidance on security upgrades.

Think of prevention as layers rather than a single purchase. Everyday habits address common opportunities; keyless-fob precautions address a particular signal risk; physical locks and immobilizers address different parts of access and starting; trackers support recovery. Choose only the measures that fit your vehicle and circumstances, and keep using the basic routine even after adding equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I protect my car from theft?

Take the key or fob with you, close the windows, lock the doors, and confirm that the vehicle actually locked. Do not leave it running unattended, keep valuables out of view, and park in a well-lit place when practical. If the vehicle is keyless, secure the main and spare fobs away from the car, doors, and windows. Consider added devices only for the specific risks they address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I prevent keyless car theft?

Keep the keyless fob and spare away from the vehicle and from doors and windows. A signal-blocking pouch may help if it fits and still works; test it periodically according to its maker’s instructions. Check the vehicle or fob manual to see whether wireless signals can be turned off and for any model-specific recommendations. No one measure guarantees against theft.

Does a steering-wheel lock stop car theft?

A steering-wheel lock is a visible physical barrier that may deter or delay an attempt to drive away, but it is not a guarantee and does not do the same job as an immobilizer or tracker. Choose one that fits the vehicle and look for a credible security rating where applicable; rating schemes vary by country.

What is the difference between an immobilizer and a tracker?

An immobilizer prevents starting without an authorized key or process. A tracker can help locate a vehicle after it has been stolen. A tracker is a recovery aid, not a substitute for a measure that addresses access or starting. Check compatibility, installation, and any continuing service requirements.

How much does car-theft protection cost?

The available sources do not provide reliable prices or rank products. Costs vary by product and vehicle, and an installed system or tracker may involve fitting or continuing service requirements. Ask the seller, manufacturer, or qualified installer for the purchase, installation, and ongoing costs that apply to your specific vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a remote-lock signal be blocked?

Police.uk warns that electronic jamming can prevent a remote-lock signal from reaching the vehicle. After pressing the button, check the locks, lights, or another confirmation your vehicle provides rather than assuming the car locked.

The Bottom Line

Make locking, taking every key, and checking that the car is secure a routine. For keyless vehicles, protect the fobs as well as the car. Add a physical lock, compatible immobilizer, or tracker only when it addresses a specific need—and remember that prevention and recovery devices do different jobs, with none guaranteeing the vehicle cannot be stolen.
