These instructions are for opening doors from inside the cabin, not entering a locked car from outside. First identify your model and door, then follow the matching procedure and confirm it in the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle.
Before using a manual door release
- Do not use it while the vehicle is moving. Tesla’s Model Y Owner’s Manual states: “Do not use the manual door release while the vehicle is moving.” Tesla Model Y Owner’s Manual: Opening Doors with No Power.
- If electrical power is available, use the normal interior door-handle control. Tesla says the doors are electrically powered; if the vehicle has no low-voltage power, the interior handle button will not open them. Tesla Model S Owner’s Manual: Doors.
- Without power, the window may not lower automatically as the door opens. Tesla warns that opening a door with the window up can damage the glass or trim. Avoid forcing the door or window.
- Manual-release positions and steps vary. The model year, production configuration, and door all matter; use the manual for your specific car if the release is not where described here.

Model S: open the front or rear door
Front doors
For the 2012–2020 Model S manual edition, Tesla says to use the interior handles as usual when the vehicle has no electrical power.
Rear doors
- Fold back the edge of the carpet below the rear seats to expose the mechanical release cable.
- Pull the cable toward the center of the vehicle.
Tesla says to reserve the rear manual release for situations when the vehicle has no power. The cited steps are specific to the 2012–2020 manual edition, so consult the manual for a newer Model S or a regional variant. Tesla Model S Owner’s Manual: Opening Doors with No Power.
Model 3: open the front or rear door
Front doors
Pull up the manual release located in front of the window switches. The standard interior door control is electrically operated, so use the manual release only when needed.

Rear doors
The rear release is accessed at the rear door pocket, but its precise arrangement depends on the vehicle’s manufacturing configuration. Tesla’s official material describes a change for Model 3 vehicles manufactured at Gigafactory Shanghai from approximately February 2025: lift off the rear release cover and pull the mechanical cable forward. Model X: open a front door or Falcon Wing door
Front doors
Use the interior handles as usual when the vehicle has no electrical power.

Falcon Wing doors
- Carefully remove the door speaker grille.
- Pull the mechanical release cable down and toward the front of the vehicle to release the latch.
- Manually lift the door.

Model Y: open the front or rear door
Front doors
Pull up the manual release in front of the window switches. When the vehicle is powered, use the button at the top of the interior handle instead.

This guide covers opening doors from inside the cabin. It does not establish how to enter a locked Tesla from outside without a key, and loss of low-voltage power is not the same as a high-voltage battery issue.
