The episode captured extraordinary launch interest, but it was a local dealership account—not evidence that every store stayed open overnight or that every visitor took a drive. Xiaomi later reported 136,854 SU7-series deliveries in 2024 and said cumulative deliveries passed 500,000 by August 17, 2026. Early order announcements were not equivalent to completed sales.
What happened at the dealership at 3 a.m.?
CarNewsChina reported on March 31, 2024, that a Shanghai Xiaomi Auto dealership manager said test-drive appointments on March 30 ran until 3 a.m. The outlet also reported about 10,000 visitors at that dealership, who came to see the SU7 or seek a test drive. The report does not say that all those visitors drove the car, and it describes one dealership rather than Xiaomi’s nationwide operation. CarNewsChina’s account of the Shanghai dealership
The timing is a vivid snapshot of launch-day attention, not a measure of vehicle sales. Xiaomi’s initial order figures provide a broader indicator of interest, but they need to be read with their own definitions and time windows.
How many people ordered the SU7—and what did those figures mean?
At the March 2024 China-market launch, Xiaomi announced 50,000 orders in the first 27 minutes after sales opened, according to the Associated Press. Within 24 hours, Xiaomi announced 88,898 “firm orders.” CnEVPost reported that this first-day total included both refundable and non-refundable orders, so neither figure should be read as a count of cars already sold or delivered.

Why “firm orders” did not necessarily mean firm sales
At launch, customers could generally cancel within seven days unless they locked their vehicle configuration, at which point the deposit became non-refundable and production followed, CnEVPost reported. That distinction matters: Xiaomi’s 88,898 first-day figure was the company’s “firm orders” tally, but it still included orders that could be refunded during the hesitation period. It is more accurate to call it an order count than a sales or delivery total.
CnEVPost also reported 90–120 people per store per day seeking test drives and a three-to-five-day wait for new bookings at that time. Those were March 2024 conditions, not current wait-time information.

Did the early rush translate into deliveries?
Xiaomi’s 2024 annual report records 136,854 SU7-series deliveries for that year. The company’s 2026 interim report later said cumulative SU7-series deliveries had exceeded 500,000 as of August 17, 2026. These later delivery figures show that the launch generated substantial follow-through, while remaining distinct from the much earlier order announcements.
The company’s reports also show how its sales footprint expanded in mainland China: Xiaomi listed 200 EV sales centers in 58 cities at December 31, 2024, and 477 smart EV sales centers in 138 cities at December 31, 2025. These are company-reported network counts for those dates, not evidence that the original 3 a.m. schedule was repeated across the network. Xiaomi 2024 Annual Report · Xiaomi 2025 Annual Report

The 2026 SU7 launch is a separate order story
Xiaomi says a new-generation SU7 launched in March 2026. In its 2025 annual report, the company reported more than 15,000 locked-in orders in 34 minutes and more than 30,000 in the first three days. Those figures refer to the new-generation model and to locked-in orders; they should not be added to or confused with the original 2024 launch totals.
The same report listed China-market starting prices of RMB219,900 for Standard, RMB249,900 for Pro and RMB303,900 for Max. These are prices reported for China, not evidence of pricing or availability in other countries. Xiaomi 2025 Annual Report
What the frenzy does—and does not—prove
- It does show concentrated early interest. The reported overnight appointment schedule and first-day order announcements indicate unusually strong attention to the SU7’s launch.
- It does not establish a record-setting launch against other automakers. The figures here do not provide a comparable cross-brand dataset using the same order rules, time periods and delivery definitions.
- It is China-market evidence. Launch ordering and the sales-center figures cited are for mainland China. The reports do not establish that the SU7 is available to buy in a reader’s own market.
- It is not a current test-drive forecast. The 3 a.m. anecdote and reported booking waits date to March 2024; they do not establish today’s appointment availability.
Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s founder, told the Associated Press at the 2024 launch, “There’s still a long way to go for our car to become a Porsche.” That was a comment about Xiaomi’s ambition, not evidence of a performance comparison. Associated Press, March 28, 2024
