How to Open Tesla Doors Manually if the Powered Doors Stop Working

Tesla’s manual door releases vary by model, year, and build. Find the correct front or rear procedure and avoid common no-power pitfalls.

If a Tesla has lost low-voltage power, its normal interior door button may not work. Use the mechanical release for your exact model and build: on many models the front release is near the window switches, but rear-door releases differ and may not be fitted. Keep the vehicle stopped, and check the matching Tesla owner manual before operating a release.

Find the instructions for your exact Tesla

Do not assume that a release location or procedure is the same across Tesla models—or across every vehicle of one model. Start with the vehicle’s model, model year, and, where relevant, production configuration. Tesla’s Owner’s Manual portal lists manuals for Model S, Model X, Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, and selected legacy years. Select the manual that matches the vehicle, then look for “Opening Doors with No Power.”

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This is especially important when power is unavailable: an interior door-open button that normally works may not operate, and the mechanical release may be hidden behind a mat, cover, carpet edge, or speaker grille. The right method depends on which door you need to open as well as which Tesla you have. A front-door instruction is not automatically a rear-door instruction, and a rear-door release shown for one model cannot be assumed to exist on another.

Vehicle Manual covered by the instructions below Rear-door point to check
Model 3 Current Model 3 manual Procedure varies by configuration; the manual identifies a different arrangement on vehicles manufactured in Gigafactory Shanghai from approximately February 2025.
Model Y 2020–2024 manual Not every Model Y has a rear manual release.
Model S 2012–2020 manual only Legacy rear-cable instructions must not be assumed to apply to newer Model S vehicles.
Model X Model X manual Falcon Wing doors have a distinct cable release and require manual lifting after the latch releases.
Cybertruck North America manual; search result identifies software version 2026.32 Rear release cable is accessed through the map-pocket mat.

These distinctions matter because a front-door release does not tell you how to release a rear door. If the manual for the exact vehicle shows a different arrangement, follow that manual’s illustrations and instructions rather than adapting the steps below.

Use the manual portal to choose the vehicle family and the relevant year or configuration rather than relying on a general description. The portal includes selected legacy-year manuals, which is useful when the procedure for an older vehicle differs from the current instructions. For example, Tesla’s 2012–2020 Model S manual describes front doors opening as usual with the interior handles, while the front releases described for many other models are near the window switches. These are not interchangeable instructions.

Before you pull a manual release

  • Stop the vehicle. Tesla warns: “Do not use the manual door release while the vehicle is moving.”
  • Use the normal control when power is available. The mechanical release is for a no-power situation or when otherwise necessary; it is not a substitute for the normal interior door-open button.
  • Expect the window to stay up. When a door is opened with the manual release, the window will not automatically lower. The raised glass can be damaged by contact with the vehicle trim, so open the door carefully and avoid forcing it against the window or trim.
  • Check for a rear release before relying on one. Some rear-door instructions apply only to certain configurations, and Tesla explicitly says that not every Model Y has a rear manual release.

The warning about the window is easy to overlook. With normal powered operation, a window may move as the door opens; with the manual release, Tesla cautions that it will not automatically lower. Do not treat the door as though it has completed its usual powered opening sequence. Move it carefully and avoid pushing against resistance or letting raised glass contact the vehicle’s trim.

Also avoid exploratory disassembly. The described access points are specific: a pocket cover or mat on some vehicles, carpet below the rear seats on the cited legacy Model S, and a speaker grille on Model X Falcon Wing doors. If the expected cover or cable is not present, stop and confirm the configuration in the matching manual instead of pulling at nearby trim or trying another model’s method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open a front door manually

For the models covered below, Tesla locates the front manual release in front of the window switches. In a no-power situation, operate that release and then open the door as the matching manual directs. The interior door-open button may not function when low-voltage power is absent.

  1. Confirm the vehicle is stopped and identify the front door you need to open.
  2. Locate the manual release in front of the window switches, using the illustration in the vehicle’s owner manual to confirm its position.
  3. Pull up the manual release, then push the door open. For Cybertruck, the North America manual explicitly says to pull up the front release and push the door open.
  4. Move the door carefully so the raised window does not strike the trim.

The release is a mechanical alternative to the interior powered door-open control; it does not mean that every Tesla’s front door works in exactly the same way. The matching manual remains the authority for the vehicle in front of you. In particular, do not apply the nearby-window-switch location to a vehicle whose own instructions specify another procedure.

For the 2012–2020 Model S, Tesla’s cited legacy manual gives different front-door guidance: with no electrical power, the front doors open as usual using their interior handles. Do not extend that instruction to later Model S vehicles without checking their own manual.

Open a rear door manually

First verify that the specific vehicle has a rear manual release and identify its access point. The locations and steps are not interchangeable between models. Some require a cable hidden behind a cover or mat; Model X uses a cable behind the Falcon Wing door speaker grille. The cited Model Y manual specifically cautions that rear manual releases are not present on every vehicle.

Before pulling any cable, match the access point and direction of pull to the vehicle’s illustrated instructions. “Pull forward” and “pull toward the center of the vehicle” describe different directions in the procedures below. Do not substitute one for the other. Once a latch releases, the door may still need to be pushed or lifted manually, as noted in the vehicle-specific directions.

Model 3

The current Model 3 manual describes lifting a cover at the bottom of the rear door pocket and pulling the mechanical release cable forward. It also identifies a different rear-release arrangement for vehicles manufactured in Gigafactory Shanghai from approximately February 2025. Check the vehicle’s build and follow the applicable illustration and procedure in the Model 3 Owner’s Manual; do not assume the pocket-cover procedure applies to every Model 3.

The manufacturing detail matters because a procedure that looks plausible for another Model 3 may not match the release installed in this vehicle. Use the manual’s illustration to find the right access point and cable. If the cover, cable, or arrangement shown in the manual is not what you see, do not force the pocket or pull an unfamiliar part. The cited instructions establish a model- and build-specific route, not a universal rear-door shortcut.

Model Y, 2020–2024 manual

For vehicles covered by Tesla’s 2020–2024 Model Y manual, the described procedure is to remove the mat at the bottom of the rear door pocket, press the red tab to remove the access door, and pull the cable forward. Tesla says not every Model Y has a rear manual release. If the vehicle does not have the illustrated release, do not try to create access or substitute another model’s steps.

Follow the sequence shown for the vehicle: remove the mat, use the red tab to remove the access door, and then pull the cable forward. The red tab is part of the described access procedure; do not pry at other trim if the access door does not match the manual illustration. If your Model Y lacks the release, the cited procedure cannot be used on it.

Model S, 2012–2020 manual

For the legacy Model S covered by Tesla’s 2012–2020 Model S manual, fold back the carpet edge below the rear seats and pull the exposed mechanical release cable toward the center of the vehicle. This is specific to that cited manual and is not a general instruction for all Model S generations.

Pay attention to the direction: Tesla’s cited instruction says toward the vehicle center, not forward. It is also a rear-door procedure, distinct from the legacy manual’s instruction that front doors open as usual with their interior handles when there is no electrical power. If the vehicle is newer than the covered years, consult its matching manual rather than applying this cable location.

Model X Falcon Wing door

A Model X Falcon Wing rear door has a different release arrangement from the pocket-access cables described for Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck. Tesla’s Model X Owner’s Manual directs you to carefully remove the speaker grille, pull the mechanical cable down and toward the front of the vehicle, then manually lift the door after the latch releases. Releasing the latch does not itself raise the door.

There are two distinct actions here: release the latch with the cable, then lift the Falcon Wing door manually. Do not expect the powered motion to occur after releasing the latch when the vehicle has no power. The manual calls for careful removal of the speaker grille, so use the illustrated instructions and avoid pulling forcefully at the grille or other interior panels.

Cybertruck rear door

For Cybertruck, the North America manual directs you to remove the rubber mat at the bottom of the rear map pocket, pull the mechanical release cable forward, and push the door open. See Tesla’s Cybertruck Owner’s Manual for the illustrated procedure. The cited manual search result identifies North America and software version 2026.32; check the manual applicable to your vehicle and region.

Do not confuse this rear procedure with Cybertruck’s front-door release. The front instructions say to pull up the release in front of the window switches and push the door open; the rear instructions use the map-pocket mat and a cable pulled forward. As with other models, the door window will not automatically lower when opened with the manual release, so open carefully.

How the procedures differ

The practical comparison is not simply “Tesla versus Tesla.” It is front versus rear, one model family versus another, and—on some vehicles—one production configuration versus another:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Front doors: Many of the models described here place a manual release in front of the window switches. The 2012–2020 Model S manual instead says its front doors open as usual using the interior handles with no electrical power.
  • Rear doors with pocket or map-pocket access: Model 3, the covered Model Y, and Cybertruck describe cables accessed through a rear pocket area, but their covers, mats, and steps differ.
  • Rear doors with a different access point: The cited 2012–2020 Model S manual uses a cable below the rear seats, while Model X Falcon Wing doors use a cable behind the speaker grille.
  • Rear-release availability: Tesla says not every Model Y has a rear manual release. Model 3’s current manual also identifies a different arrangement for vehicles manufactured in Gigafactory Shanghai from approximately February 2025.
  • What happens after release: Most described procedures say to push the door open; Model X Falcon Wing doors require manually lifting after the latch releases.

These differences are why a generic instruction such as “look for a cable in the rear door” is not enough. The cable may be behind a different access point, may pull in a different direction, or may not be installed in that rear door at all. Use the vehicle’s manual to identify both the release and the follow-through action.

If the door still will not open

A manual release is a mechanical way to unlatch a door when powered controls are unavailable; the instructions do not establish that it will overcome every obstruction or fault. If the vehicle has a different release layout, a rear release is absent, or the specified release does not open the door, stop rather than pulling an unfamiliar cable or forcing a panel. Consult the matching owner manual or contact Tesla service for model-specific help. If there is an immediate safety emergency, contact local emergency services.

Do not use a window-breaking tool as a substitute for finding the correct release procedure. The documented steps rely on built-in mechanical releases and do not call for a separate product. If the manual’s release cannot be identified or operated as directed, guessing can damage trim or expose the window to contact when it stays raised. Get help rather than improvising.

When asking for assistance, identify the model, model year, which door is affected, and—if relevant—the vehicle’s build or production configuration. Those details are useful because the procedures differ by vehicle and door, and the Model 3 manual calls out a build-specific rear arrangement. For Cybertruck, make sure the manual you consult is applicable to the vehicle’s region.

Frequently asked questions

Will the normal interior door button work if the Tesla has no low-voltage power?

It may not. Tesla’s Cybertruck manual explicitly says interior door-open buttons will not open the doors without low-voltage power. Use the mechanical release specified for the vehicle rather than assuming the powered button is available.

Where is the Tesla manual door release?

For many of the models covered here, the front release is in front of the window switches. Rear releases vary: they may be behind a rear-pocket cover or mat, below the rear-seat carpet on the cited legacy Model S, or behind a Model X Falcon Wing door speaker grille. Check the matching owner manual for the exact location.

Do all Tesla rear doors have manual releases?

No. Tesla explicitly says not every Model Y has a rear manual release. Rear-door arrangements also differ by model and, in the Model 3 manual, by production configuration. Verify the release in the applicable manual before relying on one.

Can I use the manual release while the car is moving?

No. Tesla’s warning is direct: “Do not use the manual door release while the vehicle is moving.” Stop the vehicle before using it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will the window lower when I open a door with the manual release?

No. Tesla cautions that the window will not automatically lower when a manual release opens the door. Open carefully because the raised window can contact and damage the vehicle trim.

The Bottom Line

Keep the Tesla stopped, identify the exact model, year, and relevant build, then use its “Opening Doors with No Power” instructions. Front releases are often near the window switches, but rear procedures and release availability vary. Do not use another model’s steps, force unfamiliar trim, or forget that a manually opened door’s window will stay raised.
