In a compatible car with Google built in, the main controls are in the vehicle’s Settings app and in Google Maps. Use Settings > Location for the vehicle-wide location switch, Settings > App permissions for individual apps, Settings > Google > Manage activity controls for account-saved activity, and Maps > Settings > Privacy center for trip, sensor, electric-vehicle, and offline-map sharing. To remove personal information, choose between removing one account, deleting a profile, or erasing all infotainment data; those actions have different scopes.
This guide applies to cars with Google apps and services built in, sometimes called Google built-in. That is different from running Google Maps or Android Auto from a phone. Menu names and available features vary by vehicle manufacturer, region, language, software version, and data plan, so use the owner’s manual when a label does not match your screen. Start with the setting you actually need
Privacy controls in a Google-built-in car are distributed across several menus. Changing one switch does not automatically change every other form of data sharing. For example, turning off vehicle location is separate from denying an app’s location permission, and removing a Google Account is not the same as erasing the car’s infotainment storage.

The exact wording can differ. If a path is absent, look for the equivalent in the car’s manual rather than assuming the feature is supported.

Decide whether to sign in
What signing in provides
Google recommends signing in for the fullest experience. A personal Google Account can support Assistant or Gemini setup where available, app downloads, personalized destinations such as Home and Work, and settings that follow you across Google services. Account activity controls determine which activity is saved for personalization; signing in does not mean every type of Maps data is handled identically.
For the official QR-code sign-in flow, put the car in Park and have an Android phone, a personal Google Account, and a compatible car ready. Work, school, and other organization accounts are not supported by that flow. Follow the QR code and on-screen prompts in the vehicle. The requirements and sign-in process are documented in Google’s sign-in instructions.
What happens if you stay signed out
You can still drive and use some Google apps while signed out or offline, but some apps and features will be unavailable. This can be a sensible choice for a shared or temporary vehicle when personalization is less important than minimizing account data in the car. It is not a guarantee that the vehicle or its manufacturer has no data connection; connectivity and manufacturer services are separate considerations.

Vehicle-wide location
To change the broad location setting, open Settings > Location and turn Location on or off. Google says vehicle location enables Maps navigation, real-time traffic, automatic rerouting, and location-based search results. It may also support driver-assistance features such as road-sign updates. Switching it off can therefore remove or degrade those functions rather than merely hiding a setting.
Per-app permissions
For a narrower change, open Settings > App permissions, select an app, and review permissions such as location or microphone. This lets you keep location available for navigation while denying it to an app that does not need it. Permission names and available choices depend on the software installed in the vehicle.
General apps versus driver assistance
Some vehicles provide separate controls under Settings > Privacy > Location for general apps and for driver-assistance apps or features. Google documents the driver-assistance control only for vehicles running Android 12 or later. If that second control is missing, the car may use a different software version or expose the function under another manufacturer-specific menu.

After changing a location permission, test the function you rely on while parked. Navigation, traffic, search, rerouting, and some safety-related assistance can behave differently when location is unavailable.
Choose what Google saves to your account
Activity controls in the car
When signed in, open Settings > Google > Manage activity controls. Use the available controls to decide what activity is saved to your Google Account for personalization. You can also review or delete account activity through Google’s My Activity service. The car’s controls and the web account page are two ways to manage the same broad category of account activity; they do not replace the separate Maps Privacy center.
Assistant and Gemini controls
Google says the full Assistant experience may depend on Web & App Activity and personal results. A more limited Assistant experience can remain available without those settings. Current Google-built-in cars may also show Gemini controls for conversation history, connected apps, and deletion through My Activity or the vehicle’s Privacy Hub. Do not assume every car has those Gemini menus: availability depends on the car, language, region, and data plan.
If a driver profile is shared, review personal results and connected apps before leaving the car signed in. A profile can expose saved destinations or other personalized responses to the next driver even when the vehicle itself remains usable.
Review Google Maps data sharing in the Privacy center
Open Google Maps on the car screen and select Maps > Settings > Privacy center. This is the place to review Maps-specific sharing rather than general account activity.
Trip and sensor data
Google describes trip and sensor data as potentially including GPS location, route and navigation details, road descriptions, vehicle sensor status, and sensor information from connected devices. Google says this information can help update Maps and provide real-time traffic information.

The protection Google describes is specific, not universal: map updates from this trip and sensor data are not associated with your Google Account or the vehicle. The underlying trip and sensor data are associated with a securely generated identifier that resets regularly. Other information gathered while you use Maps may still be associated with the Google Account. Read the full explanation in Google Maps’ data-sharing guidance for cars.
Electric-vehicle data sharing
On applicable electric vehicles, the Privacy center may offer sharing of vehicle data such as battery level, battery capacity, charging speed, air-conditioning status, engine or braking efficiency, and vehicle specifications. Google says this data is saved on its servers and used for range estimates, charging recommendations, alerts, and efficiency improvements. The option is conditional on the vehicle and its software; it is not a universal setting in every Google-built-in car.
Set an offline-map policy that matches your priorities
Automatic downloads
Automatic offline-map downloads keep map areas updated without requiring you to select each area. Google says that, periodically, the vehicle may contact its servers with information such as vehicle location, Timeline, and the maps downloaded to the car. Turning automatic downloads off does not delete maps that are already stored.
Manual downloads
With manual downloads, you select the areas yourself and are responsible for updating them. This reduces automatic map-management activity but creates a maintenance task: check the downloaded area before a long trip and refresh it when roads or destinations have changed.
Why freshness matters
Google warns that if the map covering the driving area is missing or out of date, some vehicle safety features may not work. Offline maps also let Maps operate without an internet connection, so they are useful when coverage is weak or the vehicle has no data plan. Keep the map areas needed for regular routes current even if you prefer manual downloads. See Google’s Maps Privacy center instructions for the available choices.
Understand connectivity when there is no vehicle data plan
Without a mobile data plan for the car, Wi-Fi or a phone’s mobile hotspot can provide internet access for many features. Google notes that some apps or functions may not work fully without connectivity. Search, live traffic, account synchronization, app downloads, and other online functions can therefore be less capable than when the vehicle is connected.

Offline maps provide a fallback, but they do not recreate every online feature. Google recommends keeping offline maps available for certain safety-related features. Connectivity supplied by the automaker may also be governed by the manufacturer’s own terms and privacy practices. Remove a single Google Account
To remove one account, open the profile settings, choose Accounts, select the account, and choose Remove Account. This is appropriate when you want to sign out one person while leaving the vehicle’s broader configuration intact. It does not necessarily remove every saved preference, another driver’s account, downloaded maps, or manufacturer-held data.
Delete the driver profile
Deleting a profile removes the saved preferences and accounts associated with that profile. Use this when the profile itself should no longer exist, but confirm what the vehicle’s profile manager says will be removed before accepting the prompt.
Erase all infotainment data
For a comprehensive infotainment reset, use Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data. This is the broadest of the three actions and can remove settings, accounts, and locally stored infotainment data. It may also require the car to be configured again by the next driver. Because reset behavior is vehicle-specific, consult the owner’s manual and make sure you understand the warning screen before confirming.
Google says a signed-out driver can still drive and use some Google apps, so removing an account does not necessarily disable the car. It simply changes which personalized and account-based functions are available.

Review diagnostics and manufacturer connectivity
Google provides a usage-and-diagnostics switch at Settings > Google > More > Usage & diagnostics where supported. Separately, Google says cars periodically exchange information such as software version and network connectivity so Google can support app and service consistency and software updates.

If the automaker supplies the vehicle’s data connection, the manufacturer may have additional access or separate privacy terms. Check the car’s Network Settings and the manufacturer’s documentation for that part of the data path. Google’s privacy page is the reference for the Google controls: Privacy, app permissions, and data sharing for your car with Google built-in.
A practical privacy setup sequence
- Identify the active profile. Confirm which driver profile is selected before changing account or personalization settings.
- Choose signed-in or signed-out use. Sign in only if personalized destinations, app downloads, or Assistant/Gemini features justify it.
- Set location deliberately. Use the vehicle-wide switch for a broad change, then inspect individual app permissions and any separate driver-assistance control.
- Review account activity. Open Manage activity controls and remove or disable categories you do not want saved.
- Open Maps Privacy center. Decide about trip and sensor sharing, applicable EV data sharing, and automatic versus manual offline maps.
- Check offline coverage. Make sure the areas needed for regular driving are downloaded and current, particularly if connectivity is unreliable.
- Review diagnostics and network terms. Decide about usage and diagnostics, then check the automaker’s terms for its supplied data connection.
- Reset when ownership changes. Remove the account, delete the profile, or erase all infotainment data according to how much of the car’s local data must be cleared.
Troubleshooting common problems
The QR sign-in process will not start
- Put the car in Park.
- Use an Android phone and a personal Google Account.
- Confirm that the car is compatible with the Google-built-in sign-in flow.
- Do not use a work, school, or other organization account for this QR process.
If those conditions are met and the option is still absent, the vehicle may use a different setup flow; consult its manual.
Navigation or live traffic stopped working
- Check the vehicle-wide Location switch.
- Review Maps’ location permission under App permissions.
- Check the separate driver-assistance location control if the vehicle provides one.
- Verify Wi-Fi, hotspot, or the vehicle data connection for online traffic and search.
- Confirm that the relevant offline map is present and current.
Location changes can affect navigation, traffic, rerouting, search, and some driver-assistance functions, so restoring only one permission may not restore every feature.

EV sharing is conditional. The menu may be unavailable because the vehicle is not an applicable EV, the software does not support the feature, or the option is not offered in your region or configuration. Do not treat its absence as proof that no vehicle data is processed; check the manufacturer’s connectivity terms as well.
Personal information remains after removing an account
Removing an account affects that account’s sign-in. It does not equal deleting a profile or erasing all infotainment data. If the car is changing hands, inspect profiles and locally saved settings, then use the broader reset only after reading the vehicle’s warning and manual.
A safety-related feature reports missing map data
Download or update the map for the driving area, and check whether automatic downloads are disabled. Google warns that missing or outdated maps can affect some vehicle safety features. If the map cannot update, provide Wi-Fi or a hotspot and follow the vehicle’s update instructions.
What each privacy choice trades off

The safest approach is to change the narrowest control that solves your concern, then test the functions you need. Use a full reset when the car is being transferred or when you intentionally want to clear the infotainment system, not as a substitute for an app permission change.
