Maintain a Chrysler 3.6L Pentastar V6 by following the maintenance schedule for the exact vehicle, model year, market and powertrain, not a generic Pentastar timetable. Oil viscosity, oil capacity, coolant chemistry, filter fitment and replacement intervals vary between applications. The owner’s manual and the vehicle’s oil-change monitor are the controlling references.
For example, the 2024 Chrysler Pacifica 3.6L uses full-synthetic SAE 0W-20 meeting MS-6395 and takes 5 qt (4.7 L) with a filter, while the 2017 Chrysler 300 3.6L manual specifies SAE 5W-20 and 6 qt (5.6 L). Those figures demonstrate why copying a specification from another Chrysler is unsafe.

Start with the exact Pentastar application
“Pentastar” identifies a family of 3.6-liter V6 engines installed in multiple Chrysler vehicles and model years. The same displacement does not guarantee the same oil grade, fill quantity, maintenance interval or replacement part. Before buying supplies, record the vehicle model, model year, market, engine configuration and whether it is a hybrid. Then use that vehicle’s owner’s manual, maintenance schedule and under-hood labels.
Market differences and powertrain changes can alter requirements. Hybrid versions may have additional coolant circuits and service procedures that do not apply to a conventional engine. If the manual for your vehicle conflicts with a general Pentastar recommendation, follow the vehicle manual.

These are model-specific figures from the respective owner’s manuals, not universal specifications for every Chrysler 3.6L V6.
What oil does a 3.6 Pentastar take?
Use the viscosity and manufacturer material standard printed in the exact owner’s manual and on the oil-filler cap. Do not choose oil solely because it is labeled “for Pentastar” or because another Chrysler uses that grade. The 2024 Pacifica specification is full-synthetic SAE 0W-20 meeting MS-6395; the 2017 Chrysler 300 example calls for SAE 5W-20. The difference is substantial enough that substituting one for the other without application-specific approval is poor practice.
Buy enough oil for the stated capacity, but do not pour the entire container in automatically. Capacity figures are with a new filter and are starting points for filling. After the engine has been serviced, verify the level on the dipstick and keep it between the marked limits. Both overfilling and underfilling can damage the engine.

Use the oil-change indicator because it calculates service timing from operating conditions. Frequent short trips, trailer towing and very hot or very cold temperatures can make the message appear sooner than a mileage-only assumption.
For the 2024 Pacifica schedule, service is required when the indicator requests it and must not be allowed to exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km), 12 months or 350 engine hours, whichever comes first. Once the message appears, the manual says to arrange service as soon as possible and within the next 500 miles (805 km). At an indicated oil interval, replace both the engine oil and filter.
How to check the oil level correctly

A disciplined oil-and-filter service
- Confirm the exact oil grade, approval standard, capacity and filter fitment in the vehicle documentation.
- Prepare the correct oil, a matching filter, a drain-pan arrangement and safe access to the service points.
- Drain the used oil and replace the filter according to the vehicle’s service procedure. Do not reuse a filter simply because it has low mileage.
- Refill gradually with the specified oil, then verify the dipstick level after the engine has been run and allowed to sit.
- Reset the oil-change indicator only after the service is complete, using the procedure for that vehicle.
- Record the date, mileage or engine hours, oil specification and filter part number so the next service is traceable.
The manuals do not establish one universal filter part number or one universal reset sequence for every Pentastar vehicle, so those details must come from the target vehicle’s instructions.

The cited 2024 Pacifica manual calls for a short inspection every month or before a long trip. These checks catch low fluid levels, tire damage and lighting faults between scheduled services.
- Engine-oil level.
- Windshield-washer fluid.
- Tire pressure, tread condition and unusual wear or damage.
- Coolant-reservoir level.
- Brake-master-cylinder fluid level.
- Operation of interior and exterior lights.
Check tires when they are cold and use the pressure shown on the vehicle information label or in the manual. Tire rotation is due at the first sign of irregular wear, even if the oil-change indicator has not yet requested service. Coolant: chemistry matters
For the cited 2024 Pacifica 3.6L application, use 10-year/150,000-mile OAT coolant, or an equivalent that meets manufacturer standard MS.90032. Do not mix that OAT coolant with HOAT coolant or a generic product advertised as “globally compatible.” Do not add rust inhibitors.
Checking and adding coolant
Inspect the reservoir at the level marks with the engine cold, following the manual’s safety instructions. If coolant is low, identify the correct chemistry before adding anything. The manual warns that some vehicles require special tools for proper coolant service and advises contacting an authorized dealer when coolant must be added. That guidance is especially important for hybrid vehicles, which can have separate engine, power-electronics and battery coolant circuits.
Coolant replacement and contamination recovery
The cited Pacifica maintenance plan calls for replacing the engine, power-electronics and battery coolant at 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever comes first. This is a Pacifica schedule, not a blanket interval for every Chrysler 3.6L.
If a different coolant is introduced in an emergency, the manual says the system should be drained, flushed and refilled with compliant OAT coolant by an authorized dealer as soon as possible. Do not assume topping off with the correct color or a “universal” label will restore the required chemistry.
Scheduled filters, ignition and emissions items
Air filters, spark plugs, the front accessory-drive belt and the PCV valve are scheduled maintenance items, but their intervals and exact parts are vehicle-specific.
Cabin air filter
The 2024 Pacifica schedule lists cabin-air-filter replacement every 12,000 miles (19,000 km). Other Chrysler models may use a different interval or access procedure. Confirm the part and interval by model year and configuration before ordering.
Engine air filter
The maintenance plan lists the engine air cleaner as an inspection item at oil-change intervals when the vehicle operates in dusty or off-road conditions. Replace it when the vehicle-specific schedule or inspection calls for replacement. A filter that looks acceptable in clean city use may load much faster in dust.
Spark plugs, belt and PCV valve

Use the exact schedule and fitment information for your vehicle. Do not install plugs, a belt or a PCV valve based only on engine displacement.

Inspecting does not automatically mean replacing. The purpose is to identify wear, corrosion, leaks or deterioration early and then apply the vehicle’s repair limits and parts requirements.
Choosing parts without guessing
When comparing oils, filters, coolant or replacement parts, use four checks: exact vehicle fitment, the required viscosity or chemistry, the manufacturer’s material standard and the approval language on the package. For the Pacifica example, an oil bottle should identify full synthetic SAE 0W-20 and MS-6395, with the API Starburst trademark for an equivalent product. A coolant bottle should explicitly meet MS.90032 rather than relying on color or a broad “universal” claim.
Match the oil filter to the vehicle’s application and confirm the part number in the catalog for that model year. The same rule applies to cabin and engine air filters, spark plugs, the accessory belt and the PCV valve. A physically similar part can still have the wrong dimensions, connector or service specification.
Keep packaging or a photograph of the label with the service record. Recording the standard and quantity is more useful than recording only a brand name, particularly if the vehicle changes hands or a shop performs the next service.
Planning safe owner maintenance
Before an oil or filter job, read the vehicle procedure, identify safe lifting and drain locations, and prepare a pan that can hold the complete fill. Support the vehicle as instructed; never rely on an improvised jack arrangement. Keep used oil and filters contained for lawful recycling or disposal, and clean spills promptly.

A low reservoir, an unexplained change in level or uncertainty about which coolant circuit is involved is a reason to pause and obtain model-specific instructions. Hybrid vehicles may require procedures and equipment that are not appropriate for a conventional-engine DIY service.
After any fluid service, check for leaks, verify the final level using the manual’s procedure and make sure warning messages are cleared only through the specified reset process. A reset indicator is not proof that the correct oil, filter or coolant was installed.
How to select professional service
If you use a shop, compare demonstrated Chrysler or Pentastar experience, access to the required tools, a written description of the work and the shop’s ability to identify hybrid coolant circuits when applicable. Ask the appointment writer to record the exact model year, engine, market and hybrid status. The work order should state the oil viscosity and approval standard, coolant standard if relevant, quantities, filter replacement and whether the indicator will be reset.
For coolant work, ask whether the shop can perform the specified drain, flush and refill procedure and whether special tools are required for that vehicle. A clear written scope prevents an inexpensive-looking “universal coolant” top-off from being mistaken for a compliant service. Retain the invoice with mileage, engine hours when available, materials and inspection findings.

The table deliberately identifies the vehicle application where the manual supplies a figure. For another Chrysler, replace those entries with the intervals in that vehicle’s schedule rather than carrying them over unchanged.

Routine level checks, visual inspections and record keeping are reasonable owner tasks when you can work safely and identify the correct fluid and part. Oil and filter changes require secure vehicle support, correct disposal of used oil and accurate final-level verification.
Use a competent mechanic when you are unsure of your ability, cannot verify the correct specification, or lack the required equipment. Coolant service deserves particular caution because the cited manual identifies special-tool requirements and, for hybrids, multiple coolant circuits. A professional appointment should state the exact model year, engine, hybrid status, requested fluid standard and work to be performed.

Applying one oil grade to every 3.6L
The Pacifica and Chrysler 300 examples use different grades and capacities. Check the cap and manual before every purchase, especially when switching vehicles.
Filling by container count instead of the dipstick
Capacity is a reference for a new filter, not permission to overfill. Add gradually and verify the marked range after the engine has been run and allowed to sit.
