Before a track day, inspect every Mustang tire around its full circumference, check both sidewalls and the inner and outer wheel surfaces, and measure pressure with a gauge. Use the guidance for your exact model year, trim, tire fitment and market: Ford’s published example of 26 psi cold and 34 psi hot applies to the configuration described in that guidance, not to every Mustang. If you find damage or suspect internal damage, have a tire professional evaluate the tire before driving.

Start with the right Mustang and tire information

Track preparation starts by identifying the car and its actual tire setup—not by choosing a pressure number from another Mustang. Before checking pressures or deciding whether a tire is usable, note the model year, trim or performance package, wheel and tire fitment, and the market edition of the owner’s manual that applies to the car.

Then check the vehicle’s owner information and the tire maker’s instructions for the pressure and use guidance that matches those details. Also confirm any tire-condition or equipment requirements set by the event. A pressure suitable for street driving, a different tire, or another Mustang configuration may not be the right track setting.

  • Car: model year, trim and package.
  • Fitment: tire size and model, and wheel setup.
  • Guidance: the applicable owner-manual market edition and tire-maker instructions.
  • Event: any additional inspection or tire requirements.

Ford warns that high-speed driving with incorrect tire pressure can result in loss of control. Treat the applicable vehicle and tire guidance as the starting point, and resolve uncertainties before heading onto track.

Fitment matters because cars carrying the same Mustang name can differ in trim, package, wheels, tires and market specifications. If the tires or wheels have been changed from the car’s original setup, do not assume the pressure printed or stated for a different fitment still applies. Match advice to the tires actually on the car, and check whether the tire maker provides separate guidance for track use. If the vehicle and tire instructions appear to differ, clarify which applies to your setup rather than averaging the numbers or picking the more convenient one.

Keep the relevant details together before event day: the owner-manual pressure guidance, the tire maker’s instructions, and any event rules. This makes it easier to distinguish a cold street specification from a hot track reading and to confirm what the number actually means. A pressure without that context is not a complete recommendation.

Inspect the whole tire and wheel

A quick look at the visible tread is not enough. Check all the way around each tire, both sidewalls, and both the inner and outer surfaces of each wheel. The inner sidewall and wheel face can be harder to see while a tire is mounted, so position the car safely to inspect them rather than assuming the visible side tells the whole story.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ford’s Mustang owner-manual warning says: “After each track session or when rotating or changing tires, make sure to carefully inspect all inner and outer surfaces of wheels and the entire surface of each tire for any signs of wear or other damage.” Apply that same thoroughness before the event, then repeat the inspection during the day.

Work tire by tire so that you do not skip an area. Follow the circumference from one point back to the start, looking across the tread and along both shoulders, then inspect the sidewalls and the wheel surfaces. Repeat for all four tires. A careful, systematic pass is more useful than glancing at the tread of each tire and assuming the rest is fine.

Look for damage that calls for professional evaluation

Inspect the tread, grooves and sidewalls for cuts, cracks, bruises, bulges, or signs that tread or sidewall layers are separating. Also look for cracking in the tread grooves and any new or unusual damage. These are not cosmetic details to dismiss before a high-speed session.

If you see damage—or suspect damage inside the tire—do not rely on an outside visual check to certify it as safe. Ford owner information advises having a tire professional inspect suspected internal damage with the tire dismounted. Pause use of the tire until it has been evaluated; a surface inspection cannot establish that its internal structure is sound.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give particular attention to anything that looks different from the rest of the tire or has appeared since the previous check. A bulge, visible separation, crack, or cut is a reason to stop and seek professional evaluation, not to make a pressure adjustment and continue. The inspection is a screening step: it can identify a reason to investigate, but a visual pass cannot prove that hidden damage is absent.

Check wear across the tread

Look for uneven wear as well as overall tread loss. Compare the tread across the tire rather than checking only one convenient spot. A tread-depth gauge can help measure depth, but it cannot reveal every defect or replace a full visual inspection.

Ford’s US-market 2026 Mustang owner information says tires must be replaced at 2/32 inch (1.6 mm) of tread depth. Built-in treadwear indicators become level with the surrounding tread at that limit. This is Ford’s stated replacement threshold—not a guarantee that a tire with more tread is ready for track use. Tire model, condition, wear distribution and event rules still matter.

Use the wear bars as a visible warning of the manufacturer’s replacement limit, and use a tread-depth gauge if you want a measurement to record or compare. The gauge is especially useful for tracking whether wear is changing, but one measurement at one spot does not describe the whole tire. Check more than one area across the tread and keep looking for uneven wear, cracks, bruising, bulges and separation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2/32-inch figure is a replacement threshold from Ford’s 2026 US-market owner information. It is not an event inspection standard and does not say that every tire above that depth is suitable for hard track use. A tire can have tread remaining and still show damage or an uneven wear pattern that warrants attention. Conversely, do not use a visual estimate in place of the stated limit when the tread indicators are level or measurement shows the tire is at the threshold.

Use pressure guidance for your exact setup

Measure pressure with a tire pressure gauge and follow the instructions for the exact car and tires. A gauge gives you a reading to compare with that guidance; it does not tell you which pressure target applies. Do not substitute a number from another year, trim, fitment, tire or type of driving.

Figure What it applies to How to use it
26 psi cold / 34 psi hot Ford’s current online Mustang track guidance, for the particular configuration described on that page. Do not treat these as universal Mustang track pressures. Verify whether the configuration matches your car before applying the figures.
Approximately 4 psi increase Ford’s general tire-care example in the US-market 2026 Mustang owner information: pressure may rise by about this amount after more than three minutes or one mile of driving. This illustrates the effect of warming. It is not a target pressure for a track session.

Pressure changes as a tire warms. A cold reading before you leave cannot stand in for the monitoring instructions that apply to your tire and vehicle throughout a track day. Michelin’s track-day guidance advises starting from the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure and checking tire wear and tread depth; it does not provide one universal Mustang track pressure.

Use a gauge to measure rather than estimating by appearance or assuming the tires remain at their starting pressure. Keep the measurement context with each reading: whether it was taken cold or hot, and whether it was before driving, after a session, or at another point specified by your vehicle and tire instructions. That context is what makes readings useful for comparison. Follow the applicable monitoring procedure instead of turning an isolated reading into a general target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ford’s example of an approximate 4 psi rise after more than three minutes or one mile of driving helps explain why a warm tire may read higher than a cold one. It is a general tire-care example in the 2026 US owner information, not a track-pressure allowance and not a direction to add or remove a fixed amount. Track sessions involve a different use context, and neither that example nor another car’s hot reading supplies the right target for your Mustang.

ETENWOLF Tire Pressure Gauge for Cars 0-75 PSI with Large Glow Dial
  • PROCESS LEVEL ACCURACY: This heavy duty tire pressure gauge is calibrated manually to ANSI B40.1 Grade A (±1% of span)
  • PRESSURE RANGE 0-75 PSI: ETENWOLF’s tire gauge can measure pressure of pickup, motorcycle, truck, bike, SUV, RV or ATV
  • EASY TO READ IN THE DARKNESS: The large glow dial helps you clearly read the pressure at night or in low light
  • EASY TO USE: 360 degree swivel chuck allows you to measure and take a reading from a tire valve at any angle
  • ACCURACY IN EXTREME WEATHER: PSI gauge works normally even in extreme cold or hot weather

When you compare any two recommendations, check five things before deciding whether they conflict: Mustang year and trim, tire and fitment, cold or hot measurement, street or track use, and the location and condition of any wear. If a recommendation does not specify enough to match your setup, do not treat it as an interchangeable target.

Ford’s online guidance presents 26 psi cold and 34 psi hot for the particular configuration described on its page. Those figures are useful only if the car and tire setup match the described configuration and the guidance applies to the vehicle. They should not be copied to another Mustang solely because it is also a Mustang or attends the same event. The same caution applies when comparing notes with another driver: first establish which tire, car, temperature condition and use the number describes.

Before you leave for the event

  1. Identify the setup. Record the Mustang’s year, trim or package, tire model and size, and wheel fitment. Find the owner-manual edition for the applicable market and check the tire maker’s directions.
  2. Check event requirements. Confirm any event-specific inspection or tire-condition rules. Do not assume that meeting a general road-tire replacement threshold automatically satisfies an event’s requirements.
  3. Inspect each tire and wheel. With the car safely positioned, examine the entire circumference of every tire, both sidewalls, tread grooves, and inner and outer wheel surfaces. Look for damage, uneven wear, and separation.
  4. Assess tread. Check wear indicators and measure tread depth where useful. Treat Ford’s 2/32-inch (1.6 mm) figure as its 2026 US-manual replacement threshold, not as proof of track suitability above that depth.
  5. Resolve concerns before driving. If there is visible damage, unusual wear, or suspected internal damage, ask a tire professional to evaluate the tire. Do not use a gauge or tread-depth reading as a substitute for that assessment.
  6. Measure pressure. Use a gauge and compare the reading with the pressure guidance for the exact vehicle and tire. Confirm whether the specified reading is cold or warm and how the instructions say to monitor pressure during use.
  7. Keep a simple record. Note the readings and any wear observations consistently so you can compare them after sessions.

A practical pre-event record does not need to be complicated. Note which tire you checked, the pressure reading and whether it was cold or hot, and any unusual wear or visible concern. If you find a difference between tires or an area that deserves another look, write it down rather than relying on memory after several sessions. Consistent notes make it easier to see whether a condition has changed; they do not replace inspection or determine by themselves that a tire is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the decision before arriving at the grid, not while feeling rushed to join a session. If the correct pressure instructions are unclear, or a tire has damage that needs evaluation, pause the plan and ask the vehicle or tire manufacturer or a qualified tire professional for setup-specific guidance. An uncertain number or unresolved defect is not a reason to guess.

Between sessions: inspect again, not just at the start

Track use can change both pressure and tire condition over the course of the day. After every session, repeat the full tire-and-wheel inspection: check all tire surfaces and the inner and outer wheel surfaces for new damage or excessive wear. Repeat it as well after rotating or changing tires, as Ford’s owner-manual warning specifies.

Check pressure as directed for your vehicle and tire rather than assuming the pre-event reading still describes the warmed setup. Record readings consistently alongside your wear observations. If a tire or wheel shows damage or excessive wear, stop using it and arrange evaluation or replacement as appropriate; do not wait until the end of the day to investigate a concerning change.

Keep the between-session check as complete as the initial one. Inspect the inner surface as well as the side facing outward, and look across the full tire rather than only at the shoulder you can see without repositioning. The purpose is to catch a change before the next run. If you observe a cut, crack, bulge, bruising, separation, excessive wear, or a condition that makes you suspect internal damage, treat it as a concern for professional evaluation rather than trying to resolve it with pressure alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When recording pressure, use the procedure specified for the car and tire and label the readings clearly. A cold value and a post-session hot value are different kinds of observations; do not compare them as if they were taken under the same conditions. Michelin’s advice to start from vehicle-manufacturer pressure and check wear and tread depth is a useful general track-day frame, but it does not replace the exact Mustang and tire instructions or supply a universal hot target.

Optional observation for cornering wear

A Mustang Club of America HPDE preparation document describes checking pressure around runs and marking tread or sidewall areas to observe whether a tire appears to roll onto its sidewall under cornering. This can add an observation to your notes, but it is supplementary club advice—not a substitute for the car’s model-specific instructions, a complete inspection, or professional evaluation of suspected damage. Do not interpret a mark by itself as a safety clearance or universal pressure target.

If you use this observation, treat it as a way to notice a pattern rather than as a measurement that answers every pressure question. It cannot establish that the tire’s structure is sound, determine the applicable pressure specification, or override event requirements. Record what you see alongside the tire setup and pressure conditions, and ask a qualified professional if the wear or behavior raises a concern.

When the track day is over

Inspect the tires and wheels after the final session, using the same full-surface check. When track use is complete, return to the street pressure and setup specified for the exact car in its applicable owner manual. Do not assume a track setting is suitable for ordinary road use, or that a track-day pressure example from another configuration is the correct street setting for yours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not skip the final inspection just because the car has finished its last run. Damage or excessive wear found at the end of the day still deserves attention before the next drive. If a tire or wheel shows a concerning condition, have it evaluated before returning to normal use. For pressure, use the applicable street specification and instructions for the exact vehicle, rather than carrying a track setting over to the road.

Tools that help—and what they cannot tell you

  • Tire pressure gauge: the clearest tool for measuring pressure so you can compare it with the applicable vehicle and tire instructions. It does not supply a universal target.
  • Tread-depth gauge: useful for measuring tread depth at the points you check. It does not reveal all damage, explain uneven wear on its own, or establish that a tire is track-ready.
  • Visual inspection: essential for finding visible cuts, cracks, bulges, bruises, separation and uneven wear, but unable to certify hidden internal structure.
  • Professional tire inspection: the appropriate next step when damage is present or internal damage is suspected; Ford’s damage guidance calls for suspected internal damage to be checked with the tire dismounted.

A gauge is useful only when paired with the correct specification. A precise reading against the wrong target is still the wrong basis for a decision. Likewise, a tread-depth gauge can document depth, but it cannot assess a sidewall bulge or rule out internal damage. Use the tools to support a full inspection, not to replace it.

How to decide whether a tire is ready

Use the inspection to identify problems, not to create a false pass/fail rule from one measurement. A tire at Ford’s stated 2/32-inch replacement threshold has reached the manufacturer’s replacement limit in the 2026 US owner information. A tire above that depth may still be unsuitable because of damage, uneven wear, its condition, the tire model, or an event’s rules.

Likewise, a pressure number is meaningful only when its vehicle, tire, use and temperature context match. Ford’s 26 psi cold and 34 psi hot example belongs to the particular configuration described in Ford’s online track guidance; Ford and Michelin do not establish a single pressure chart for every Mustang. If the applicable instructions do not clearly cover your setup, get guidance from the vehicle or tire manufacturer or a qualified tire professional rather than borrowing a number.

Think of the checks as separate questions. Is there visible damage? Is wear excessive or uneven? Is tread at Ford’s stated replacement threshold? Does the pressure reading match the instructions for this exact car and tire, measured under the required conditions? Does the event have additional requirements? A good answer on one question does not settle the others. For example, a satisfactory pressure reading does not cancel a sidewall crack, and tread above the replacement threshold does not overrule a visible bulge or event rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I inspect my Mustang tires before a track day?

Identify the exact model year, trim, tire and wheel fitment, and applicable owner-manual market edition. Then inspect the full circumference of every tire, both sidewalls, tread grooves, and inner and outer wheel surfaces; check for damage and uneven wear; review tread depth and wear bars; and measure pressure with a gauge against the correct vehicle and tire instructions. Have a tire professional evaluate visible damage or suspected internal damage before driving.

What pressure should Mustang tires be at for a track day?

There is no single pressure supported for every Mustang. Use the instructions for the exact car, tire and fitment, and distinguish cold from hot readings and street from track use. Ford’s online Mustang track guidance gives 26 psi cold and 34 psi hot for the particular configuration described on that page; do not apply those numbers to another configuration without confirming they match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you tell if you have the proper pressure once you are driving at the track?

Use a tire pressure gauge and follow the monitoring procedure for your specific vehicle and tires. Pressure changes as tires warm, so label readings by when and under what conditions they were taken and compare them with the applicable instructions. Ford’s approximate 4 psi warming example in its 2026 US manual is general tire-care information, not a track target.

How much tread does Ford say a Mustang tire needs?

Ford’s US-market 2026 Mustang owner information says to replace tires at 2/32 inch (1.6 mm), when built-in treadwear indicators become level with the surrounding tread. That is Ford’s stated replacement threshold, not a guarantee that any tire above it is track-ready; condition, uneven wear, tire model and event rules also matter.

What tire damage means I should not go onto the track?

Ford owner information lists cracks, cuts, bruises, bulges, cracks in tread grooves, and tread or sidewall separation as damage signs. If damage is visible or internal damage is suspected, do not rely on a surface check; have a tire professional inspect it. Ford’s guidance says suspected internal damage should be checked with the tire dismounted.

Should I inspect my Mustang tires between track sessions?

Yes. Ford’s Mustang owner-manual warning calls for inspection after each track session and after rotating or changing tires. Check the entire surface of each tire and the inner and outer surfaces of each wheel, then monitor pressure as directed for the exact car and tire. Stop using a tire or wheel showing damage or excessive wear and arrange evaluation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Before a Mustang track day, inspect every tire and wheel completely, measure pressure with a gauge, and use only the guidance that matches your exact car, tires, market and measurement conditions. Ford’s 2/32-inch (1.6 mm) figure is its 2026 US-manual replacement threshold, not blanket proof of track suitability; Ford’s 26 psi cold / 34 psi hot example is configuration-specific. Inspect again after every session, and have a tire professional evaluate damage or suspected internal damage before driving.
