Use a route planner that knows your vehicle and battery state when possible; then verify each candidate stop’s connector, plug-level power, route detour, eligibility and live status. Treat a charger’s kW rating as a capability—not a promise of the speed your car will receive—and keep a backup stop and arrival reserve.
Choose a route-planning tool that fits your vehicle
The best starting point is usually your car’s built-in EV route planner, if it supports charging stops and has accurate information about your vehicle and battery. A planner that accounts for the specific car can suggest stops in context rather than simply displaying nearby chargers. Still, confirm the recommended station’s connector, access rules and current status before relying on it.

For Tesla drivers, Trip Planner can add Supercharger stops based on the route and current charge. Drivers of other makes should check Tesla’s app using “Find a Charger” or Tesla’s Find Us map to see which Supercharger locations are open to their vehicle. Access is site-specific: a Tesla location that does not appear in those views may not currently be open to other makes. Do not infer that every Supercharger is available to every EV.
For a broader search, PlugShare can show candidate charging locations along a route and lets you select a vehicle or connector and filter by minimum power. It is useful for finding and screening options, but PlugShare describes itself as a mapping tool rather than a navigation platform. Check the route and detour in your navigation system as well.

Google Maps can provide charger-location details, real-time port availability and charging-speed information in supported in-car experiences, and can suggest charging stops based on battery charge. Google describes these capabilities as rolling out for vehicles with Google built-in. Their availability depends on the particular vehicle and region, so do not assume that a feature shown in Google’s general documentation is enabled in your car.
What matters when choosing a tool
| Tool | Useful for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle’s built-in EV planner | Route suggestions that may account for the car and its battery state. | Whether charging stops are supported and whether the vehicle and battery information are accurate. |
| Tesla Trip Planner | Planning a Tesla trip with Supercharger stops based on the route and current charge. | For a non-Tesla, confirm that a specific site is open to that vehicle in Tesla’s app or Find Us map. |
| PlugShare | Searching a route, selecting a vehicle or connector, and filtering candidate sites by power. | Plug-level data, live-status coverage, route detour and missing power data. PlugShare says it is a mapping tool, not a navigation platform. |
| Google Maps in supported vehicles | Charger details and, where available, battery-aware route charging suggestions. | Whether the feature has rolled out for the particular Google-built-in vehicle and region. |
No universal winner is established by these differences. A useful setup may combine a vehicle-aware planner with a route map for screening and the charging network’s own app or map for access and current status.
Compare tools by asking six practical questions: Does it model your vehicle and battery state? Can you select the right connector and confirm network eligibility? Can it filter by minimum power and show details for an individual plug? Does it provide live availability, and for which networks? Can it show stops along your route and the detour to reach them? Does the feature work in your vehicle and region? A tool can be strong on route planning but incomplete on live status, or useful for map screening without automatically building a vehicle-specific itinerary.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Find candidate stops along your route
- Enter the actual trip. Start with your origin and destination in the vehicle planner or a route-planning map. If the tool accepts vehicle details and current battery charge, enter accurate information; otherwise, treat its route suggestions as a starting point rather than a vehicle-specific plan.
- Select the connector your vehicle can use. In PlugShare, add the vehicle or choose its connector before narrowing results. Confirm whether a compatible adapter is required and whether the station permits your vehicle. Connector compatibility alone does not establish access to a site.
- Set a minimum-power filter that matches your goal. Apply the power threshold after connector selection, then inspect individual plug details when the map provides them. A location’s headline power range may not describe the particular plug you would use.
- Check the route position and detour. Prefer a stop that fits the journey and inspect the added distance or time. PlugShare’s default along-route view is limited to a short distance from the route. If results are scarce, expand the radius or disable the along-route restriction and inspect the map before concluding that no useful chargers exist.
- Check live status and identify a backup. Where supported, review current port or stall availability. Then find another viable stop in case the preferred location is occupied or unavailable when you arrive.
How to choose a useful power threshold
Choose the minimum-power filter as a screening aid, not as a declaration that everything below it is unusable. A higher threshold can reduce the map to sites more likely to meet a fast-stop goal, but it can also hide options that are practical for your vehicle or useful as a fallback. First select the connector and route area, then raise or lower the power threshold and compare what changes. If the filtered map suddenly looks implausibly empty, check whether the filter or missing data is responsible before treating the corridor as having no chargers.
The available guidance does not define one kW number that counts as “high power” for every EV. For example, the Tesla Model S manual’s above-70-kW map control is a feature of that model’s described navigation system, not a standard threshold for every vehicle or charging network. Set a threshold based on what you are trying to screen for, and read the vehicle’s own charging plan or manual for applicable vehicle limits and interface options.
Why a high-power filter can hide useful stops
Power information is not complete for every PlugShare location. PlugShare says a site without assigned power defaults to zero for filtering, so a minimum-power filter can remove it from results even when the location might otherwise be worth checking. If a corridor appears to have implausibly few options, relax the power filter and inspect the map. Missing data is not proof that a station is slow or unusable.

Also check what the filter is measuring. A location may have a range of power values, while the particular plug you plan to use has its own capability. Where PlugShare shows individual plug details, use those rather than relying only on the location’s headline figure. If the plug’s power is not stated, you cannot confidently compare it with a threshold based on plug-level power.

Connector compatibility and permission to charge
First establish that the connector fits your vehicle, directly or through an adapter you can use at that site. Then confirm the charging provider allows your vehicle to use the location. These are separate checks: a connector match does not guarantee that a network or individual site is open to your car. Tesla’s guidance for drivers of other makes is a concrete example of why the site-level check matters; use the Tesla app’s “Find a Charger” or Find Us map rather than assuming access from the presence of a Supercharger on another map.
When a map offers a vehicle selector, use it before searching rather than relying on a generic list of stations. Then inspect the specific site: whether it is open to your vehicle is an access question, while whether its plug fits is a connector question. Keep both checks in the plan. The exact connector, adapter and access rules depend on the vehicle and provider; no single adapter or network-access assumption applies to every EV.
Power capability at the plug
Use the stated kW as an indicator of the plug’s power capability. Higher rated power generally offers the potential for faster charging, but it does not promise that your vehicle will charge at that rate. A site-level range may cover more than one charger or plug, so inspect the specific unit where that detail is available.
There is no universal definition of “high power” established for every EV and interface. For one narrow example, the Tesla Model S online owner’s manual describes a map control for high-power chargers above 70 kW. That threshold applies to that Model S navigation system; it is not a general cutoff for all cars, routes or charging networks.
Route fit, availability and redundancy
A technically suitable charger can still be inconvenient if reaching it adds a substantial detour. Review the route position and the detour shown by your route tool. PlugShare’s default along-route search covers only a short distance from the route, so widen the search if nearby alternatives do not appear.

Live availability can help you avoid a stop whose ports are currently occupied, but coverage is not universal. In PlugShare, the live-status filter applies only to networks listed in its Networks filter. A location outside that coverage may lack the status information you want; do not read an absent status indicator as confirmation that a port is free. Likewise, a site with several chargers provides more hardware options, but the number of chargers does not guarantee that one will be available.
Check status near the time you plan to use the station, while remembering that a live snapshot is not a promise of what will be available on arrival. If the service does not show a network’s status, that is a coverage limitation, not evidence that the site is either available or unavailable. For a candidate that matters to the route, confirm details through a map or app that supports the provider and keep the backup in view.
Understand what the kW rating says about charging time
A charger’s kW figure is its power capability, not the exact rate a particular car will receive during a session. The delivered rate depends on the specific plug’s power information and the vehicle. Tesla also identifies battery charge level, battery temperature, how many vehicles are using the station and extreme climate as factors that can change Supercharging speed.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCharging speed can change during a single stop. Tesla says charging slows as the battery fills, so a session planned to reach 100% can take significantly longer than one ending around 80%. A high-power station does not remove this effect. For route planning, distinguish between the station’s maximum capability and the speed your vehicle can sustain at its current battery level and conditions.
Do not convert a kW rating into a guaranteed stop duration unless your vehicle-specific planner provides a relevant estimate—and even then, treat it as an estimate. The information here does not establish a universal charging-time calculation for all cars, batteries, temperatures or sites.
In practice, read a charger listing as one input in a chain: the site must be accessible to your vehicle, the plug must be compatible, and the vehicle and conditions determine how much of the listed capability can be used. A large kW number can help distinguish candidate equipment, but it cannot by itself answer how long a stop will take. If a planner estimates a charging stop, use the estimate as a planning aid rather than an exact arrival promise, because battery level, temperature, station use and climate can change the rate.

Keep an arrival reserve and a fallback
PlugShare’s Trip Planner guide recommends planning to arrive with at least 10–15% charge to help cover unexpected conditions such as traffic or a station being down. That is a planning recommendation from PlugShare, not a guarantee that the reserve will cover every route or disruption. Conditions and the vehicle’s energy use can vary, so leave room for uncertainty rather than making the preferred charger the absolute limit of the plan.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Identify a backup stop before setting out, especially where the corridor has few alternatives. A backup should pass the same essential checks—connector fit, vehicle eligibility and route feasibility—even if its power is lower than your preferred option. If a power filter removes locations because their data is missing, revisit the map with a looser filter rather than treating the filtered list as the full set of possibilities.
Think of the reserve and backup as complementary safeguards: the reserve gives you some margin to reach another option if the first plan changes, while the backup gives you a destination to check next. The 10–15% figure is PlugShare’s recommendation, not a promise that any particular percentage is enough for every route. If a corridor is sparse, make the alternate stop part of the route plan instead of waiting until a station is occupied or down to search again.
Use Tesla Model S high-power map controls carefully
The Tesla Model S online owner’s manual describes a map control that shows high-power chargers above 70 kW. In the configuration covered by that manual, third-party stations must be enabled in navigation settings and added to the route manually; Trip Planner’s automatic routing uses Supercharger locations. These instructions are specific to the described Model S navigation system and may not match other Tesla models, software versions or regions.
If you drive a Model S and want to use the control, check your own navigation settings for third-party charging stations and verify the result on the map. Do not assume that the manual’s above-70-kW control is a universal EV filter, or that enabling third-party stations means they will automatically be included in Trip Planner’s route.

Troubleshoot a route with too few high-power results
- No compatible stations appear: Confirm the selected connector or vehicle, then check whether your filter is excluding sites that may allow an adapter or a different compatible option. Verify site eligibility separately; a map result does not guarantee permission to charge.
- A power filter leaves the map nearly empty: Lower or remove the minimum-power filter and inspect the route. PlugShare may treat locations without assigned power as zero, causing them to disappear from filtered results.
- Along-route search shows no useful alternatives: Expand PlugShare’s route radius or turn off the along-route restriction, then inspect each candidate’s detour rather than assuming every expanded result is convenient.
- Live status is missing: Check whether the network is included in PlugShare’s Networks filter. If it is not, confirm status through a source that supports that network; an unavailable status field does not tell you whether a stall is free.
- A Tesla site appears in one map but not Tesla’s access view: For a non-Tesla vehicle, use Tesla’s app or Find Us map to check whether that particular location is open to your car.
- The predicted charging stop seems too short or too long: Remember that power capability is not delivered speed. Battery charge level, temperature, station use and climate can affect the session, and charging slows as the battery fills.
- A map’s feature does not match its documentation: Check whether the tool supports your particular vehicle and region. Google says its in-car charger details and battery-aware suggestions are rolling out for vehicles with Google built-in; availability should not be assumed from the feature description alone.
A practical pre-trip checklist
- Use a vehicle-aware planner when available, with accurate vehicle and battery information.
- Confirm the connector and any adapter requirement, then check that your vehicle is allowed at the specific site.
- Filter by a realistic minimum power and inspect plug-level data where available.
- Review detour distance or time, and widen the route search if results are scarce.
- Check live status only as far as the service’s coverage allows.
- Keep the PlugShare-recommended 10–15% arrival reserve in mind and identify a viable backup stop.
Controls, network access and feature availability can vary by vehicle, app version, country and charging provider. If a route planner’s behavior differs from the steps here, verify the relevant settings and site details in the current vehicle or provider interface rather than assuming every model exposes the same controls.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best app for finding high-power EV chargers along a route?
There is no universal winner. Start with a vehicle-aware planner if it supports charging stops and has accurate vehicle and battery information. PlugShare can help search along a route, select a connector and filter by power, while Tesla Trip Planner integrates Supercharger stops for Tesla trips. Google Maps offers some charger and battery-aware routing features in supported Google built-in vehicles. Compare connector and access checks, plug-level power details, live-status coverage, detours and support for your specific vehicle and region.
How do I filter for high-power charging stations?
Enter your route, select your vehicle or connector, then apply a minimum-power filter and inspect the specific plug’s details where available. Do not treat a location’s headline power range as the rating of every plug there. PlugShare says locations without assigned power default to zero for filtering, so relax the filter and inspect the map if results seem implausibly sparse.
What kW rating counts as high power?
There is no universal cutoff in the guidance here. Tesla’s Model S online owner’s manual describes a high-power map control for chargers above 70 kW, but that is specific to the described Model S navigation system. Use a threshold appropriate to your search and check the limits and route estimates for your own vehicle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes a charger’s kW rating tell me how fast my EV will charge?
No. The rating describes power capability, not the exact rate your car will receive. The vehicle and specific plug matter, and Tesla identifies battery charge level, battery temperature, station use and extreme climate as factors that can change Supercharging speed. Charging also slows as the battery fills, so a stop to reach 100% can take significantly longer than one ending around 80%.
Can a non-Tesla EV use any Tesla Supercharger?
Do not assume so. Tesla says access for other makes is site-specific. Check Tesla’s app using “Find a Charger” or Tesla’s Find Us map to see whether the particular site is open to your vehicle; a location missing from those views may not currently be open to other makes.
How much charge should I have when I reach a planned charger?
PlugShare’s Trip Planner guide recommends planning to arrive with at least 10–15% charge to help cover unexpected conditions such as traffic or a station being down. It is a recommendation, not a guarantee for every route. Keep a viable backup stop, especially on a corridor with few alternatives.
Why does my route map show no high-power stations?
Check whether the connector or vehicle selection is too narrow, whether the minimum-power filter is excluding sites with missing power data, and whether the along-route search area is too limited. PlugShare says its default along-route view covers a short distance from the route and its locations without assigned power default to zero for filtering. Expand the search, relax the filter and inspect candidate plug details and detours.
Can I rely on live charger availability in a map?
Use live status when the service supports it, but check its coverage. PlugShare’s live-status filter applies only to networks listed in its Networks filter. An absent status does not mean a stall is free, and a current snapshot does not guarantee availability when you arrive. Keep another eligible, reachable stop in mind.
The Bottom Line
Find candidate stops with a planner that fits your vehicle, then verify connector fit, site access, individual-plug power, detour and live-status coverage. A high kW rating is potential capability, not a guaranteed session speed; preserve PlugShare’s recommended 10–15% arrival reserve and identify a viable backup.
