Start by identifying which Renault 8 Gordini you have: the R1134 with a 1,108 cc engine or the later R1135 with a 1,255 cc engine. They differ in carburettors and gearbox, so parts, settings and service procedures should come from documentation for the correct version—not from a generic Renault 8 specification. A matching workshop manual is essential for exact capacities, intervals, clearances and adjustment values.

That first step matters whether you are maintaining a car you have owned for years, recommissioning one after storage, or assessing a recent purchase. The model names give you a starting point, but the equipment presently fitted may not match the original specification. Build a clear record of the car and use it to guide every parts order, inspection and repair.

Identify the version before servicing it

Renault’s 2014 technical specification lists two distinct Gordini types. The R1134 was produced from October 1964 to June 1966; the R1135 followed from July 1966 to June 1970. Renault lists production totals of 2,626 R1134s and 8,981 R1135s. These figures help describe the models, but they are not evidence about reliability or maintenance needs.

Version Engine Carburettors Gearbox Production period
R1134 / 1100 Type 804-00; 1,108 cc Solex 40PHH2 twin-choke Four-speed, according to Renault’s heritage overview October 1964–June 1966
R1135 / 1300 Type 812-02; 1,255 cc Weber 40DCOE twin-choke Five-speed, according to Renault’s heritage overview July 1966–June 1970

Renault’s technical entries describe both engines as having a single chain-driven camshaft and pushrods. That shared layout does not make all service specifications interchangeable. Cars may also have period or later changes, so verify the components actually fitted rather than relying only on a badge or seller’s description.

The production dates can help you frame an identification check, but year alone is not enough to choose every service part. Renault identifies the R1134 by engine type 804-00 and the R1135 by engine type 812-02. Their displacement, carburettor model and gearbox also differ. An engine, carburettor or transmission may have been changed during the car’s life, so the most useful question is not just “Which model should this be?” but “What is fitted now, and what documentation applies to it?”

Make a configuration record

Before ordering parts or setting up a service plan, record the vehicle type or chassis information available with the car and confirm the installed engine, carburettors, gearbox and oil-filter arrangement. Note any known modifications. If a component does not match the model’s documented configuration, investigate the installed part and its documentation before applying a factory setting.

Keep this record practical and specific. Note identifying information from the car’s paperwork and markings, then list the components you can positively identify. Photographing labels, castings or other identifiers can help you compare them with a manual or discuss them with a specialist later. Mark anything uncertain as “unconfirmed” rather than treating an assumption as fact. This is especially useful when a previous owner’s changes are undocumented.

Use the record whenever you consult a parts listing or repair procedure. If a listing names the R1134 but your car has a different carburettor or gearbox, pause and establish whether the listing applies to the fitted component. Do not use the shared Renault 8 name as proof that a setting, part or procedure is common to both Gordini versions.

Get the correct repair documentation

Model-specific repair documentation is listed for both R1134 and R1135. TMB Books describes the French ADC 25 manual as covering the engine, clutch, gearbox, front and rear axles, suspension, wheel hubs, brakes, steering and electrical systems. Renault repair-document listings also distinguish addenda for the two types. A Haynes / Revue Technique retailer listing describes a Renault 8 Gordini manual covering 1965–1970; check its precise version coverage and language before purchase.

Use the manual matching the car and the procedure being performed. Confirm that its version coverage fits the vehicle, and check that you have any relevant addendum. A catalog description establishes that a manual covers certain systems; it does not establish that a particular edition contains the latest or complete schedule for every surviving, modified car.

If you are looking for a workshop manual, search by the specific R1134 or R1135 designation as well as by “Renault 8 Gordini.” Check the stated model years, language, edition and whether the listing includes the relevant addendum. The French ADC 25 is described as covering both types and a broad set of mechanical and electrical systems, but buyers should verify the exact item and coverage with the seller before purchasing. A retailer’s summary is not a substitute for checking the manual itself.

Build a usable service reference

  1. Match the manual to the car. Compare its stated model coverage with the recorded type and the components installed.
  2. Find the procedure before beginning work. Use the manual’s procedure for the correct system and version, including the specified tools, measurements and adjustment sequence.
  3. Record what you find. Keep dates, odometer readings, parts fitted, measurements, fluid quantities and unresolved faults together with the car’s configuration record. Distinguish observed values from factory specifications.
  4. Ask for help where the procedure or result is uncertain. A specialist familiar with classic Renaults can assess discrepancies and safety-critical work without relying on guessed settings.

When reading a procedure, check that it refers to the right version and component before applying it. A number copied from a note, forum post or another owner’s car may describe a different engine, carburettor, gearbox or modification. Write down the manual page or procedure used alongside your service entry, and record whether a measurement came from the manual or was simply observed on the car.

Do not begin a job based only on a broad system heading in a catalog description. Confirm that the actual manual includes the relevant steps, measurements and equipment requirements. If the procedure calls for tools you do not have, or the result does not make sense for the fitted parts, stop and ask a specialist rather than improvising an adjustment.

Plan maintenance by system

The available model-specific manual descriptions identify the major systems to account for, but they do not provide a verified periodic schedule here. Set timing and adjustment values from the matching repair documentation, not from estimates or a schedule borrowed from another Renault 8. The checks below help organize an inspection; they are not substitutes for the manual’s procedures.

For a newly acquired or long-stored car, begin by establishing what is known and unknown. Review previous service records, compare the documented configuration with the installed components, and note visible leaks, damage, unusual sounds or operation. A preliminary walk-around does not certify a car as roadworthy; it helps identify questions that need a proper procedure or qualified inspection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a car already in regular use, maintain a running log rather than relying on memory. Record the date and odometer reading, work carried out, parts or fluids used, measurements, and any new symptom. The manual should determine the actual intervals and values. A log helps you see whether a condition is changing and prevents a prior owner’s unverified setting from being mistaken for a factory specification.

Engine lubrication and cooling

  • Inspect for visible oil or coolant leaks and changes in fluid condition. If a leak, contamination or abnormal level appears, identify the cause before treating a top-up as a repair.
  • Check the installed oil-filter arrangement before selecting a fill quantity. Follow the correct manual’s filling and level-check procedure rather than assuming a generic capacity.
  • For the cooling system, look for leaks, damaged hoses and other visible deterioration. Use the version-specific documentation for coolant requirements, filling, bleeding and any repair procedure.

Do not infer a lubricant grade or capacity from engine displacement alone. Even where two versions share a basic engine architecture, their precise service instructions still need to be checked against the matching documentation and the hardware fitted. If you cannot establish the filter arrangement or the engine has been modified, resolve that uncertainty before filling or ordering service parts.

During an inspection, note where any fluid appears and whether it returns after cleaning or further use, but do not assume the source from the location of a stain alone. A visible leak, an unexplained level change or fluid that looks abnormal is a reason to investigate the cause. Use the manual’s diagnostic and repair steps, and seek help if you cannot identify the source safely.

Carburettors and ignition

  • Confirm whether the car has the R1134’s documented Solex 40PHH2 pair, the R1135’s documented Weber 40DCOE pair, or a different setup.
  • Record symptoms such as difficult starting, uneven running or inconsistent response. These observations are not diagnoses; use the matching carburettor and ignition procedures to investigate them.
  • Do not transfer jetting, timing or adjustment figures from one version—or from a modified car—to another without confirming compatibility in the applicable documentation.

Carburetion and ignition are linked in the way the engine runs, but an operating symptom by itself does not identify which component needs adjustment. Write down when the symptom occurs and what you observed, then follow the relevant diagnostic sequence. Changing several settings at once makes it harder to know what corrected—or worsened—the condition.

The carburettor distinction is one of the clearest practical differences between the two variants: Renault lists twin-choke Solex 40PHH2 carburettors for the R1134 and twin-choke Weber 40DCOE carburettors for the R1135. Confirm what is actually installed, especially on a car with a replacement engine or other changes. Use the correct component information before ordering parts or adjusting the system.

Clutch, gearbox, axles and hubs

  • Verify which gearbox is installed before ordering parts or following a service procedure; Renault’s heritage overview distinguishes the R1134 four-speed from the R1135 five-speed.
  • Pay attention to changes in clutch operation, shifting, noise or vibration, and locate the relevant diagnostic procedure in the manual.
  • Inspect for leaks and visible damage around drivetrain components. The manual scope includes the clutch, gearbox, both axles and wheel hubs; consult it for inspection limits, lubrication requirements and repair steps.

Do not assume that a car’s original gearbox is still installed. Confirm the transmission before selecting a procedure or parts, and document the result. If shifting or clutch behavior changes, describe the symptom rather than jumping to a diagnosis. Noise, vibration or a visible leak may warrant further investigation, but the correct next step depends on the manual’s checks and the condition of the installed components.

Axles and hubs deserve attention as part of the same broad inspection because they are included in model-specific manual coverage. Look for visible damage or signs that something needs closer examination, but do not treat a quick look as a measurement of bearing condition or a substitute for the specified inspection. Use the correct procedure for any dismantling, adjustment or repair.

Suspension, steering, brakes, wheels and tires

  • Before driving a newly acquired or long-stored car, have uncertain brake, steering, suspension, tire and wheel-bearing condition investigated. This is prudent classic-car practice, not a claim that every Gordini has a particular defect.
  • Watch for looseness, damage, uneven tire condition, leaks or unusual behavior, but do not infer that a component is safe from a brief visual check alone.
  • Use the appropriate workshop procedure for measurements, adjustments and repairs. If you lack the equipment or experience to assess a safety-critical result, have a qualified specialist inspect it before road use.

Brakes, steering, suspension, wheels and tires affect whether the car can be used safely. A tire that appears intact, a steering component that looks secure or a brake pedal that moves does not prove that the whole system meets its required condition. For anything uncertain, use the documented inspection procedure and arrange a specialist assessment before driving.

Be especially cautious when a car has stood unused, has an incomplete history or has parts that do not match its documentation. Record what is visibly wrong and what remains unverified. Do not road-test a car to investigate a safety-critical concern if its condition has not first been established. The point is not to presume a defect unique to the Gordini; it is to avoid treating an unknown classic-car condition as safe without checking.

Electrical system

  • Inspect visible wiring and connections for damage or poor condition, and note any intermittent or failed electrical functions.
  • Use the correct wiring information and diagnostic procedure for the car’s actual configuration. Avoid substituting a guessed connection or adjustment for a documented repair.

Record which functions fail and whether the problem is constant or intermittent. That description is more useful than replacing parts at random. A car with alterations may not follow the expected wiring arrangement, so confirm the installed configuration and use the appropriate information before changing connections. If you cannot establish what a wire or component serves, pause and seek qualified help.

What oil and service interval should you use?

The available information does not establish a definitive oil grade, capacity or change interval for every R1134 and R1135. A Renault 8 Club ČR specifications page gives 2.15 litres without a filter and 2.5 litres with a filter, and reports change figures of once per 2,500 km and once per 5,000 km. Those are secondary Renault 8 figures; their applicability to both Gordini versions is not established. Do not treat them as universal Gordini instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the manual that matches the engine and the car’s actual filter arrangement for the specified oil, filling method and service interval. If the engine or lubrication system has been modified, or its history is unknown, have the configuration assessed before relying on an assumed capacity or schedule. The same rule applies to fluid grades, clearances, torque values and other settings: use the applicable procedure rather than borrowing a number from a superficially similar model.

In practical terms, the correct answer to “What oil does a Renault 8 Gordini take?” depends on identifying the car and verifying its installed equipment, then consulting the matching documentation. The secondary figures can be useful leads when looking for information, but they are not a replacement for a version-specific instruction. Confirm the amount using the prescribed filling and level-check method rather than pouring in a remembered quantity.

The same caution applies to service frequency. The quoted 2,500 km and 5,000 km figures are not established here as Gordini-specific intervals, and should not be presented as a definite schedule for either type. Do not use those numbers to override the matching manual. If the car’s history is incomplete or its configuration differs from standard, have a knowledgeable mechanic help determine an appropriate plan from the actual engine and documentation.

When to stop and seek specialist help

Pause before driving or continuing a repair if a safety-critical system has uncertain condition, a measurement falls outside the applicable procedure, or the fitted parts do not match the documentation. This is particularly important for brakes, steering, tires, suspension and wheel bearings. For engine or carburettor symptoms, avoid repeated adjustments based on guesswork; record what the car is doing and consult the correct procedure or a classic-Renault specialist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A specialist is also useful when the manual coverage is unclear, a modification cannot be identified, or a measurement does not fit the procedure. Bring the configuration record and service log, including the parts and settings already confirmed. Clear information can help the specialist separate a verified factory specification from a change made during the car’s life.

  • Detailed model kit on a scale of 1:24. The stand model has the following dimensions: Length: 156 mm, Width: 74 mm, Height: 57 mm. The kit also includes two driver figures.
  • The high-quality kit from TAMIYA must be assembled by the customer.
  • Self-assembly is accompanied by step-by-step and illustrated assembly instructions. The assembly instructions are of course included.
  • The precisely fitting individual parts must be assembled according to the assembly instructions. The parts can be painted according to your own idea.

A useful maintenance record should make future decisions easier. Keep the car’s identification and modification notes with service dates, work completed, parts used, measurements and open concerns. That record helps distinguish a verified specification from a previous owner’s setting or an unconfirmed assumption.

For every job, leave a note of what remains to be checked. A task is not complete simply because a part was replaced or a fluid was added: record the follow-up inspection, unresolved symptom or specialist recommendation. This makes the next service more informed and helps preserve the distinction between a completed repair, an interim observation and an item still requiring investigation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I identify whether my Renault 8 Gordini is an R1134 or R1135?

Renault’s 2014 technical specification identifies the R1134 as a 1,108 cc car with engine type 804-00, produced from October 1964 to June 1966. The R1135 is 1,255 cc, engine type 812-02, and was produced from July 1966 to June 1970. Check the car’s identifying information and the components actually installed; modifications or replacements mean the badge or year alone may not settle which service procedure applies.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the main maintenance differences between the R1134 and R1135?

Renault lists Solex 40PHH2 twin-choke carburettors for the R1134 and Weber 40DCOE twin-choke carburettors for the R1135. Renault’s heritage overview describes a four-speed gearbox for the 1,108 cc version and a five-speed gearbox for the 1,255 cc version. Confirm the fitted carburettors and gearbox before ordering parts or using settings.

What oil and oil-change interval does a Renault 8 Gordini need?

The figures available here do not confirm one oil grade, capacity or interval for every Gordini. A Renault 8 Club ČR page reports 2.15 litres without a filter and 2.5 litres with a filter, plus change figures of 2,500 km and 5,000 km, but their applicability to both Gordini versions is not established. Use the matching manual and verify the engine and filter arrangement.

Where can I find a Renault 8 Gordini workshop manual?

Model-specific documentation is listed for both R1134 and R1135. The French ADC 25 manual is described as covering the engine, clutch, gearbox, axles, suspension, hubs, brakes, steering and electrical systems. Renault repair-document listings also distinguish addenda for the two types. Before buying, verify the manual’s language, edition and exact model coverage with the seller.

Does the R1134 or R1135 have a camshaft and pushrods?

Renault’s technical entries describe both versions as having a single chain-driven camshaft and pushrods. That shared layout does not mean all service specifications are identical; use the documentation for the correct version and fitted components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check before driving a newly acquired or long-stored Gordini?

Have uncertain brake, steering, suspension, tire, wheel-bearing and other safety-critical condition investigated before road use. A brief visual check cannot establish that a component is safe. Use the appropriate workshop procedure and ask a qualified specialist to assess anything uncertain.

The Bottom Line

Identify the car by its type, engine and installed components before ordering parts or applying settings. The R1134 and R1135 differ in displacement, carburettors and gearbox, and Renault’s shared pushrod layout does not make their service specifications interchangeable. Use the correct repair manual for every system, verify oil and interval information against that manual and the filter setup, and have uncertain safety-critical condition checked before driving.
