The most reliable way to improve a Mahindra Thar Roxx’s fuel efficiency is to combine smooth driving with correct cold tyre pressure, less unnecessary weight, appropriate drivetrain use and on-time maintenance. First establish a real tank-to-tank baseline; then change one variable at a time. Mahindra’s owner’s manual specifically recommends moderate, steady operation, gradual slowing, avoiding hard acceleration and long idling, and controlling maximum speed to 90–100 km/h in sixth gear when conditions and legal limits permit.
What controls fuel consumption in the Thar Roxx
A Thar Roxx’s fuel use depends on more than the engine badge. The 2.0-litre mStallion TGDi petrol and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel are offered with six-speed manual and automatic transmissions, and some configurations have four-wheel drive. Traffic, terrain, load, tyre condition, air-conditioning use and driving style can change the result substantially. Therefore, a single mileage figure cannot represent every Thar Roxx.

Measure your real mileage before changing anything
A dashboard range or instantaneous-consumption display is useful for spotting trends, but it is not a controlled measurement. The most useful baseline is a consistent tank-to-tank calculation.

Mahindra’s tank-to-tank procedure
- Check and correct all tyre pressures when the tyres are cold. Use the pressure values on the vehicle placard on the front passenger-side inner B-pillar.
- Fill the tank until the pump’s automatic shut-off operates. Do not estimate the fuel level from the gauge.
- Reset the trip meter immediately after filling.
- Drive at moderate speeds for at least 150 km. A longer distance gives a more stable average, especially if the route includes traffic.
- Refill at the same station, preferably in similarly cool conditions such as morning, and stop at the same automatic cut-off.
- Record the kilometres shown on the trip meter and the litres added at the second fill. Calculate kilometres driven ÷ litres added = km/l.
For a useful comparison, keep the route, passenger count, luggage, traffic pattern, weather, air-conditioning use and fuel station as similar as practical. One unusually congested or hilly trip should not be treated as proof that the vehicle has developed a fault.
Keep a simple log
- Date and odometer or trip-meter distance
- Litres added and calculated km/l
- Petrol or diesel grade used
- Approximate city/highway split
- Number of occupants and significant cargo
- Two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive operation
- Tyre-pressure check and unusual weather or traffic
After three or more comparable fills, you can distinguish a trend from normal variation. If you change several things at once, you may improve the result without knowing which action helped or identify a problem without knowing when it began.
Use a smoother driving technique
Hold a steady, legal speed
The manual’s specific fuel-efficiency guidance is to control maximum speed between 90 and 100 km/h in sixth gear. This is manufacturer guidance for suitable conditions, not a speed target that overrides a posted limit or safety. Traffic, weather, road design, visibility and local law always come first. At a steady legal cruising speed, avoiding repeated acceleration and braking generally uses less fuel than running faster and then slowing down.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Accelerate progressively
Press the accelerator smoothly and avoid sudden or hard acceleration. A heavy throttle request demands more fuel and often leads to another brake application a few seconds later. Build speed progressively, then hold it with the smallest steady throttle opening that maintains traffic flow. Do not obstruct other road users in an attempt to save fuel; the objective is to remove unnecessary surges, not to drive unpredictably slowly.
Anticipate stops and slow gradually
Look well ahead for red lights, queues, roundabouts, speed humps and turning traffic. Lifting off early and allowing the vehicle to slow progressively reduces the need for late, heavy braking and the subsequent acceleration. Leave enough following distance to make this possible without compromising safety.
Avoid long idling
Switch the engine off when a safe, lawful stop is expected to last rather than leaving it running for extended periods. The manual lists long idling as an economy penalty. Do not idle solely to “warm” the vehicle on a cold morning: Mahindra says warming in neutral is not required and may reduce economy. Start, drive gently and allow the engine and drivetrain to reach operating temperature under light load.

Use the correct gear without forcing the issue
For manual versions, follow the recommended shift speeds and engine-speed bands in the owner’s manual. The aim is to avoid both unnecessary high revs and a gear so tall that the engine labours under heavy throttle. The sixth-gear, 90–100 km/h guidance applies only when the road, traffic and engine load make that gear appropriate.

Use the transmission’s normal drive mode, keep inputs smooth and allow it to select a suitable ratio unless a specific road condition calls for a manufacturer-provided mode.
Do not rev before switching off
The manual notes that revving the engine immediately before switching off may reduce economy. Let the engine settle at normal idle and switch off normally.
Set tyre pressure from the vehicle placard
Tyres are one of the easiest places to remove avoidable rolling resistance, but the correct pressure is vehicle-specific. Check pressure with a quality gauge when every tyre is cold and use the placard on the front passenger-side inner B-pillar. The manual does not provide one universal pressure for every Thar Roxx variant or loading condition, so a generic PSI number is inappropriate.
Check monthly and before long trips
Mahindra recommends inspecting pressure and tyre condition at least once a month and before long journeys. Visual inspection alone cannot reliably reveal a modest pressure loss. A basic pressure gauge lets you compare each tyre with the placard value before driving.
Do not overinflate to chase mileage
Underinflation increases rolling resistance and fuel consumption, but overinflation is not a manufacturer-approved fuel-saving method. Excess pressure can alter ride, grip and wear. Adjust only to the placard’s specified value, including any load-related setting shown there.

Inspect damage and wear
Look for cuts, bulges, embedded objects, uneven wear and valve leaks while checking pressure. A tyre that repeatedly loses pressure needs inspection rather than repeated topping-up. Replacement tyres should match the vehicle specification; the manual lists 255/65 R18 and 255/60 R19 ratings, but the exact size for your vehicle is the placard’s authority. Replacing worn or damaged tyres is a safety and maintenance decision, not a guaranteed mileage upgrade.
Remove avoidable load without removing safety equipment
Heavy loading and towing require more energy, particularly during acceleration and on hills. Remove tools, sports equipment, recovery gear and other cargo that you do not need for the trip. Distribute necessary luggage securely and stay within the vehicle’s permitted payload and towing limits.
Accessories can also affect consumption. Roof-mounted equipment, external carriers and other additions may increase aerodynamic drag or weight. Keep only equipment needed for the journey and remove temporary carriers when they are not in use. Do not remove safety equipment or compromise occupant protection to save fuel.

On versions equipped with four-wheel drive, the manual states that four-wheel-drive operation is less fuel efficient than two-wheel drive. Select the manufacturer-recommended two-wheel-drive mode for normal dry-road travel when it is appropriate. Use four-wheel drive when traction, terrain or the vehicle’s operating instructions require it; economy should not override control or safety.
Terrain has a similar effect. Flat routes generally return better economy than hilly routes because climbing requires additional energy. Comparing a flat highway run with a steep, stop-start route does not reveal whether the vehicle itself has changed.
Manage windows and air conditioning sensibly
At high speed, open windows increase aerodynamic drag. Closing them can help the vehicle move through the air more efficiently. At low speeds, the drag penalty is smaller, so choose ventilation based on heat, comfort, air quality and safety.

Follow the maintenance schedule
Use the specified engine oil
Mahindra recommends the engine oil specification listed for the Thar Roxx and the service schedule in the owner’s manual. Use the correct grade and approval rather than choosing an oil solely because it claims to improve mileage. The right oil supports the engine’s intended operation; it is not a substitute for diagnosing a fault.
Replace filters at the prescribed intervals
Air and fuel filters should be replaced at the intervals specified by Mahindra for your engine and operating conditions. Do not turn routine maintenance into an automatic early replacement or assume a new part will produce a measurable gain on a vehicle whose filters are already serviceable. Follow the schedule and account for severe-use conditions if the manual specifies them.
Keep up with scheduled inspections
Scheduled servicing can identify issues that affect economy, such as abnormal tyre wear, incorrect pressures, brake drag, fluid leaks or engine-management warnings. Keep service records so that a gradual change in consumption can be matched to mileage, repairs and operating conditions.
Know when to ask for a qualified inspection
Seek a qualified Mahindra service professional if tank-to-tank results remain materially worse after you have verified the measurement method, cold pressures, load, drivetrain mode and route. Arrange an inspection promptly if poor economy is accompanied by a warning lamp, hard starting, misfire, smoke, overheating, unusual vibration, a fuel smell, braking resistance or a sudden unexplained drop.
The manual does not establish that a fuel additive, tuning change or particular repair will improve an individual vehicle. A technician should diagnose the symptom before parts are replaced.

Understand published figures without treating them as promises
Mahindra’s 2024 launch material identifies the 2.0-litre mStallion TGDi petrol and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engines, with six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Economy varies by that combination, drivetrain, route and use.
| Configuration or comparison | What it means for an efficiency comparison |
|---|---|
| 2.0-litre turbo-petrol versus 2.2-litre diesel | Compare separate tank-to-tank results; engine characteristics and fuel use differ. |
| Manual versus automatic | Use the same route and traffic conditions before drawing a conclusion; do not apply manual shift advice to an automatic. |
| Two-wheel drive versus four-wheel drive | The manual says four-wheel-drive operation is less fuel efficient, but gives no percentage. |
| City versus highway | Stop-start traffic normally creates a different result from steady cruising; record the route mix. |
| Flat versus hilly terrain | Hills require more energy; compare similar terrain when checking a change. |
| Reported ARAI figure | Autocar India reports 15.2 km/l for the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol manual and 2.2-litre diesel manual versions. It is a reported ARAI figure, not a real-world promise or a value for every variant. |
Autocar India also notes that actual efficiency varies with traffic, terrain, driving conditions and driving style. The 15.2 km/l figure should therefore be used as published context for the specified manual variants, not as a target that every Thar Roxx must achieve.
Troubleshoot a sudden or persistent drop
Step 1: rule out a measurement error
Repeat the fill-to-auto-cut-off process at the same station, confirm the trip distance and calculate from litres added. Check that the fuel type and tank fills were recorded correctly. A dashboard estimate or a partially filled tank is not enough evidence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStep 2: verify the basics
- Measure all tyres cold and compare them with the placard.
- Check for a tyre that loses pressure or shows uneven wear.
- Remove unnecessary cargo and temporary carriers.
- Confirm whether four-wheel drive was engaged.
- Review idling time, traffic, hills, speed and air-conditioning use.
Step 3: compare like with like
Run another moderate trip of at least 150 km with a similar route and load. Compare several fills rather than one tank. If the result returns to normal, the earlier reading likely reflected conditions rather than a mechanical problem.
Step 4: escalate symptoms, not guesses
If the decline persists under comparable conditions, or if warning lights, smoke, rough running, overheating, fuel odour or brake drag appear, arrange a professional inspection. Provide the technician with your fuel log, tyre-pressure readings, recent service history and the conditions under which the drop occurred.
A practical routine for better Thar Roxx economy
| When | Action |
|---|---|
| Before each long trip | Check cold tyre pressures against the B-pillar placard, inspect tyres, remove unnecessary load and select the appropriate drivetrain mode. |
| During every drive | Accelerate progressively, anticipate stops, avoid long idling and maintain a steady legal speed. |
| Monthly | Repeat the cold-pressure and tyre-condition check even if the tyres look normal. |
| At scheduled service | Use the specified oil, replace air and fuel filters at the prescribed intervals and record completed maintenance. |
| When economy changes | Complete a consistent tank-to-tank test, compare similar conditions and seek qualified diagnosis if the decline remains. |
The strongest gains usually come from eliminating avoidable losses: incorrect tyre pressure, aggressive speed changes, unnecessary idling, excess load and inappropriate drivetrain use. Consistent measurement tells you whether those changes made a real difference on your particular Thar Roxx.
