How can I improve fuel economy in my Mustang GT without sacrificing reliability? Start with smooth inputs, a sensible legal cruising speed, correct cold-tire pressure, less unnecessary idling, and maintenance performed to Ford’s instructions for your exact model year. These steps cost little, do not alter the powertrain, and avoid the durability and legality risks that can come with unverified tunes or hardware changes.
There is no defensible single MPG improvement for every Mustang GT. Model year, transmission, body style, wheel and tire package, weather, traffic, terrain, and driving style all matter. Treat the figures below as context, then measure your own car over several comparable fill-ups.

What fuel economy numbers mean for a Mustang GT
Fuel economy is shaped by three interacting factors: how the car is driven, its mechanical condition, and operating conditions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) test cycle is a controlled benchmark rather than a promise for an individual owner. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) explains that its test work includes city, highway, high-speed, air-conditioning, and cold-temperature conditions, then adjusts results to better represent real-world influences such as wind, hills, and road surfaces.

A short commute in cold weather, repeated warm-ups, steep grades, or heavy traffic can produce a very different result from a steady highway trip. Even the same car can show large tank-to-tank variation without any mechanical change. Use an official rating as a comparison point, not as a target Ford guarantees in every situation.

Ford identifies the 2025 Mustang GT as using a 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8. Ford inventory listings for individual 2025 GT configurations show 14 city/23 highway MPG for one manual example and 15 city/24 highway MPG for one automatic example. Those are configuration-specific listings, not a universal rating for every GT. The 2025 EcoBoost coupe automatic’s 22 city/33 highway/26 combined rating belongs to a different trim and should not be used as a GT baseline.
| Figure | What it represents | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 14 city/23 highway MPG | One 2025 Mustang GT manual inventory listing | Example tied to that listed configuration; not a lineup-wide claim |
| 15 city/24 highway MPG | One 2025 Mustang GT automatic inventory listing | Example tied to that listed configuration; not a lineup-wide claim |
| 22 city/33 highway/26 combined MPG | 2025 Mustang EcoBoost coupe automatic | Different trim; do not apply it to a GT |
Wheel and tire equipment also varies. Ford’s 2025 technical specifications list GT configurations with standard 18-inch wheels, optional 19- or 20-inch wheels, and different tire sizes for performance packages. That variation is one reason to use the door-placard pressure and the owner’s manual for your exact car instead of copying a number from another Mustang. Transmission, body style, alignment, tire compound, passenger load, and accessories can also change the result.
The lowest-risk actions to try first
Accelerate progressively and preserve momentum
Apply the throttle smoothly rather than making repeated hard launches followed by heavy braking. Look well ahead, leave a gap that lets you ease off the accelerator, and time your approach to lights and traffic so the car can coast when appropriate. Smooth acceleration and braking reduce fuel wasted on converting speed into heat in the brakes, while avoiding abrupt pedal changes places no additional mechanical demand on the engine or transmission.

Progressive does not mean dangerously slow. Join traffic at an appropriate pace, use the available power when merging requires it, and then return to a steady load. The efficiency opportunity is avoiding unnecessary cycles of full throttle, high speed, and hard braking when traffic conditions do not require them.
DOE’s Alternative Fuels Data Center gives broad, all-vehicle estimates—not Mustang-specific test results—that aggressive driving can reduce fuel economy by 15% to 30% at highway speeds and by 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic. The ranges are large because traffic, vehicle, driver, and road conditions differ. Use them as evidence that driving style matters, not as a promised percentage for your GT.
Choose a steady, legal cruising speed
On an open road, select a speed that is legal, safe for traffic and weather, and steady enough to avoid repeated acceleration. Aerodynamic drag rises rapidly as speed increases, so a lower cruising speed generally uses less fuel than a much higher one. Do not drive below a safe or lawful speed merely to chase a number, and do not treat a single speed as an efficiency guarantee for every GT configuration.
“Fuel economy for a light-duty vehicle going 80 miles per hour (mph) is about 27% lower than when traveling at 60 miles per hour.”

Please review EULA and Privacy policy.— U.S. Department of Energy, May 30, 2022, citing an Oak Ridge National Laboratory study of 74 vehicles
That 27% result is an average from a broad 74-vehicle study, not a Mustang GT measurement. The speed at which your car is most efficient depends on its gearing, tires, load, wind, grade, and drivetrain. The practical lesson is to avoid unnecessary high-speed running while remaining within the law and normal traffic flow. Cruise control may help maintain a steady speed on a suitable, relatively level road, but it can increase fuel use on hilly terrain if it makes frequent aggressive corrections.
Cut unnecessary idling and consolidate short trips
Turn off the engine when you are stopped for a reason that does not require it to run, following local safety rules and the vehicle’s operating guidance. Avoid letting the GT idle for long warm-up periods; drive gently once visibility and conditions are safe. Never compromise defrosting, traffic awareness, or occupant safety to eliminate a few minutes of idling.

When practical, combine several short errands into one outing. DOE notes that multiple cold-start trips can consume more fuel than one longer trip over the same total distance because each start and warm-up occurs with the engine below its most efficient operating temperature. Combining trips will not remove the energy needed to move the car, but it can reduce the repeated cold-start penalty. Record whether a tank contains many short trips before comparing it with a mostly highway tank.

Wind, hills, cold weather, wet roads, heavy traffic, cargo, and frequent air-conditioning use can move MPG even when the car is healthy. Compare like with like before concluding that a change in driving technique or service caused an improvement. A sudden, persistent drop accompanied by a warning light, unusual running, or another symptom deserves diagnosis rather than an MPG gadget or an unverified modification.
Look for a pattern rather than reacting to one dashboard reading. A trip computer can be useful for trends, but its estimate may differ from a calculation based on fuel added at the pump. Keep notes about route, temperature, traffic, tire pressure, and load so a technician—or you—can distinguish a changed operating pattern from a vehicle problem.
Set tire pressure by the Ford placard, not the tire sidewall
Check pressure when the tires are cold—before driving or after the car has been parked long enough for the tires to cool—and set each tire to the pressure shown on the Mustang’s door placard or in its owner’s manual. Check all four tires, and include the spare if the vehicle has one and the manual calls for it. Do not use the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall as the vehicle setting; that number describes the tire’s limit, not Ford’s loaded-vehicle recommendation.
A basic digital tire-pressure gauge is useful for taking the measurement. A gauge is a measurement tool, not an MPG device, so its value comes from using it consistently and comparing the reading with Ford’s specification. The Mustang’s tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is a warning aid, not a replacement for checking the specified pressure with a gauge. TPMS may not alert you to a modest pressure difference, and it does not tell you the correct target for a particular wheel and tire configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInspect for a slow leak, a damaged valve, or visible tire damage if one tire repeatedly loses pressure. Uneven wear, a pull, vibration, or a change after hitting a pothole also warrants a tire and alignment inspection. Do not compensate for a handling problem by arbitrarily raising pressure or changing tire size.
DOE reports an average fuel-economy benefit of about 0.6% from proper inflation across vehicles, with improvements as high as 3% in some circumstances. Those are general estimates, not a guaranteed Mustang result. Correct pressure also supports predictable handling, braking, and tire wear, so it is a reliability- and safety-neutral maintenance action when performed to Ford’s specification.
Maintenance that can protect MPG without compromising the car
Follow the schedule for the exact model year
Use the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual for your specific Mustang GT, engine, transmission, and service market. Intervals and inspection requirements can differ between model years and operating conditions. Severe use—such as extensive short trips, dusty roads, heavy traffic, or track activity—may require additional attention under Ford’s guidance. Keep records of completed services so a technician can see what has been done and when.
Scheduled maintenance is preventive, not a promise of a particular MPG increase. Its value is keeping the engine, drivetrain, tires, and control systems within the condition Ford designed. Skipping a required inspection can allow a small issue to become an expensive fault, while performing services that are not called for adds cost without established economy benefit.
Use Ford’s specified oil grade and service procedure
Federal guidance recommends the manufacturer-recommended oil grade. Ford’s specification—not a universal “best” viscosity—should control the oil and filter choice. Use the grade, certification, capacity, and change interval stated for your car. An oil change performed with an unsuitable grade or an incorrect fill level is not an MPG upgrade and can create avoidable engine risk.

Check the level according to the owner’s manual and service on the stated schedule. Do not add extra oil, specialty additives, or friction modifiers solely because an advertisement promises better mileage. If the oil level repeatedly falls, the engine develops a leak, or the oil warning system activates, treat that as a diagnostic issue.
Repair diagnosed faults instead of replacing healthy parts
A malfunction that changes combustion, airflow, emissions control, or rolling resistance can reduce economy. If the car displays a warning light, runs abnormally, or fails an inspection, obtain a proper diagnostic scan and mechanical evaluation. Repair the confirmed cause using parts and procedures appropriate to the vehicle. Do not replace sensors, ignition components, injectors, oxygen sensors, or other parts solely because an advertisement claims they will increase MPG; the evidence here supports diagnosis-led repair, not blanket replacement.
Do not clear a warning light merely to hide the symptom before an appointment. Stored codes and freeze-frame information can help identify when the fault occurred. A professional may also check brakes that are dragging, wheel alignment, tire condition, and other sources of rolling resistance when the symptoms justify those checks.
Use qualified help when the cause is unclear
A Ford-authorized service department or another qualified repair and diagnostic facility can check stored fault codes, maintenance condition, and mechanical symptoms. Give the technician useful information: when the MPG change began, whether it occurs in city or highway use, recent fuel type, weather, tire-pressure history, warning lights, and any recent work. That information is more valuable than installing an unverified economy device.
Ask for the diagnosis and the reason for each recommended repair. A legitimate repair should address an observed symptom, test result, inspection finding, or required maintenance item. If no fault is found, return to controlled MPG tracking instead of authorizing parts replacement based only on a hoped-for percentage gain.
Changes that are not established as reliable Mustang GT MPG upgrades
The available evidence does not establish the following as dependable, Mustang-specific ways to improve fuel economy:
- Fuel additives used without a diagnosed need or a manufacturer instruction.
- Changing tire size, wheel diameter, or gearing solely to chase MPG.
- Installing an engine or transmission tune without a clearly understood calibration, emissions compliance, and durability impact.
- Removing, defeating, or altering emissions equipment.
- Replacing healthy parts in the hope that new parts alone will produce a measurable gain.
These changes can alter calibration, load, ride and handling, emissions compliance, warranty position, or component stress. A performance-oriented Mustang also has configuration-specific wheel and tire requirements, so a change that appears to reduce rolling resistance can create compromises elsewhere. Unless Ford’s documentation or a qualified diagnosis calls for a change, leave the original specification intact.

There is also no established reason to select a different fuel, oil viscosity, tire dimension, or final-drive ratio without consulting the exact Ford documentation and understanding the tradeoffs. The title does not identify a model year or package, so a recommendation that is correct for one GT could be wrong for another. Reliability means preserving the configuration’s required operating conditions, not simply reducing the number shown on the fuel display.
How to measure your own MPG accurately
Dashboard economy displays are useful for trends, but a single trip or a fluctuating estimate cannot prove that an action worked. Use the same calculation over several fill-ups. Measurement is especially important when the expected change is small, such as the general 0.6% average benefit DOE associates with proper tire inflation.
- At a fuel stop, fill the tank to the same consistent point without repeatedly topping off after the pump stops.
- Record the odometer reading or reset a trip meter, and note the gallons added. Keep the fuel unit consistent; do not mix gallons and liters in the calculation.
- Drive normally for a meaningful distance. Record route type, weather, traffic, load, and whether the tank included unusually aggressive driving, towing, or extended idling.
- At the next consistent fill, record miles driven and gallons added. Divide miles by gallons to calculate MPG:
miles driven ÷ gallons added. - Repeat for several comparable fill-ups. Compare similar city/highway mixes and similar temperatures rather than one unusually cold, windy, congested, or downhill trip.
For example, if the trip meter shows 300 miles and the next fill requires 15 gallons, the measured result is 20 MPG. That number describes that tank’s conditions; it does not establish what the car would achieve on a different route or prove that a modification caused a change.

If you are testing a behavior change, establish a baseline first, change one variable, and keep the route and driving pattern as similar as practical. Do not compare a gentle summer highway tank with a winter tank dominated by short city trips and call the difference an upgrade. Also remember that pump shutoff, parking angle, and inconsistent fill levels add noise to the calculation.

- Confirm the measurement. Recalculate from gallons and distance over more than one tank and check that the fuel type and fill method were consistent.
- Identify changed conditions. Look for more short trips, idling, high speeds, colder weather, stronger wind, hills, traffic, cargo, or air-conditioning use.
- Check basic vehicle information. Review the cold-pressure readings against the door placard and look for a TPMS warning, visible tire damage, or an obvious leak.
- Look for fault evidence. A warning light, rough running, hard starting, abnormal noise, or a recent repair can point to a mechanical or control-system issue.
- Arrange diagnosis when the decline persists. Provide the technician with your measurements and symptoms. Repair only the confirmed cause, then measure again under comparable conditions.
Stop driving and seek prompt professional advice if the car has a severe warning, overheating, major fluid leak, unsafe tire condition, or a serious drivability problem. Fuel economy is secondary to preventing damage and maintaining safe control.

Frequently asked questions
Does driving slower improve Mustang GT gas mileage?
Generally, avoiding unnecessary high speeds improves economy, but there is no universal Mustang GT percentage. DOE reported an average 27% lower fuel economy at 80 mph than at 60 mph across 74 vehicles. Drive at a safe, legal speed that fits traffic and conditions.
Will tire pressure affect my MPG?
Yes. DOE reports an average 0.6% benefit from proper inflation and as much as 3% in some circumstances across vehicles. Set cold pressure to the Mustang’s door-placard or manual value, not the maximum printed on the tire sidewall.
What maintenance helps a Mustang GT get better gas mileage?
Follow the exact model-year schedule, use Ford’s specified oil grade and service procedure, and repair confirmed faults. Maintenance cannot promise a particular MPG increase, but it can prevent a defective component or poor condition from reducing economy.
Should I use a fuel additive or MPG tune?
No general recommendation is established here. Additives, tunes, gearing changes, altered tire sizes, and emissions modifications can affect durability, legality, warranty status, handling, or emissions. Use them only when Ford documentation or a qualified diagnosis provides a specific reason.
Is the TPMS warning enough to manage tire pressure?
No. TPMS is a warning aid and may not identify a modest pressure difference or the correct target. Check cold pressure with a gauge against the exact Ford placard or owner’s manual specification.
How many tanks should I compare?
Use several comparable fill-ups rather than one trip or dashboard fluctuation. Keep the fill method, route mix, weather, traffic, load, and driving style as similar as practical, and calculate miles driven divided by gallons added.
Can short trips hurt fuel economy?
They can. Multiple cold starts and repeated warm-up periods may use more fuel than one longer trip over the same total distance. Combining errands when practical and avoiding unnecessary idling can help without changing the vehicle.

Bottom line
The reliable Mustang GT fuel-economy strategy is conservative: drive smoothly, avoid needless high-speed running and idling, keep cold tires at Ford’s placard pressure, follow the exact maintenance schedule and oil specification, and diagnose a persistent decline before changing parts. These steps protect the car while giving you a fair way to determine what your particular GT can achieve; no general DOE statistic or single Ford listing can promise the same MPG for every configuration.
