Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not start by trimming the fender or buying a larger tire. Tire rubbing is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Find the exact contact point and the condition that causes it—steering lock, suspension compression, vehicle load, or constant contact—then correct the wheel, tire, liner, suspension, or fitment issue that is actually responsible. Finish by checking both steering directions and the entire suspension travel range.
Why is my tire rubbing the fender?
A tire can touch the fender area for several unrelated reasons. The assembly may be too wide or too tall for the vehicle, a wheel may place it too far outward or inward, a liner may have come loose, or a suspension change may have reduced the available travel. A worn component, damaged spring, or altered alignment can also change the path the tire follows.

The noise alone does not identify the cause. A light scrape only at full steering lock is different from a heavy mark that appears whenever the vehicle hits a bump. Rubbing while carrying passengers points to a different clearance condition than rubbing while the vehicle is parked. Treat each pattern as a diagnostic clue rather than assuming that one popular modification will solve every case.
What the timing of the noise tells you
- Only at full left or right lock: investigate steering-angle clearance at the front tires, the liner, and the rear edge of the wheel well.
- Over bumps, dips, or rough roads: inspect clearance during suspension jounce (compression), including the outer shoulder, inner sidewall, spring, strut, and liner.
- Only when loaded: check the reduced ride height and suspension travel with the actual passengers or cargo that trigger the problem.
- At every speed or while driving straight: stop treating it as a harmless lock-to-lock rub; inspect for an oversized assembly, a loose liner, damaged suspension, or a wheel-position error.
- After a wheel, tire, lift, lowering, or alignment change: compare the new specifications and ride height with the vehicle’s approved configuration before changing anything else.
Stop driving if the contact is damaging the tire
Remove the cause before continuing normal road use if you find a cut, bulge, exposed cord, deep groove, separated rubber, or heavy heat-polished area on the tire. A tire that is being cut by a sharp liner edge or fender lip can fail even if the rubbing sound seems minor. Have a qualified technician inspect the tire and the surrounding suspension rather than performing repeated road tests.

Fresh black transfer marks on the liner, bright scuffs on a painted lip, or rubber dust around a suspension part are evidence of contact. Photograph each mark before cleaning it; the location often reveals whether the assembly is moving outward, inward, or upward during the event.
Diagnose the exact contact point before buying parts
The safest repair begins with a record of what is installed and what the vehicle is doing when the noise occurs. Do not select a replacement size from the tire sidewall alone or copy a fitment that works on another trim.
1. Record the vehicle and current fitment
- Vehicle year, make, model, trim, and drivetrain.
- Tire size, load index, speed symbol, and actual brand/model from each sidewall.
- Wheel diameter and width; record offset or backspacing if marked on the wheel or available from its documentation.
- Any lift, lowering springs, coilovers, spacers, aftermarket control arms, or alignment changes.
- Whether the rubbing is front or rear, left or right, and whether it occurs at full lock, over bumps, under load, or continuously.
2. Inspect the likely contact surfaces
With the vehicle safely parked, look at the tire shoulder and sidewall, the inner and outer fender liner, the fender lip, the bumper edge, the spring or strut, brake parts, and nearby suspension arms. A loose plastic liner or missing fastener can move into the tire’s path without any change to wheel size. A bent lip or damaged suspension mount can create a localized mark that looks like a general fitment problem.

3. Reproduce the condition without relying on a casual drive
Turn the steering fully left and fully right while stationary and inspect the gaps. Then have a qualified technician check the wheel through suspension compression and rebound with the vehicle supported by appropriate equipment. A parked, unloaded vehicle cannot show every position the tire reaches on the road. Never place any part of your body in a pinch point or rely on an improvised jack arrangement.
Verify the approved tire and wheel specifications
Use the driver’s-door placard, owner’s manual, and current vehicle and tire manufacturer information as the baseline. Cooper tire safety guidance hosted by Tire Rack says to check the vehicle’s recommended original-equipment tire size, load capacity, inflation pressure, and speed symbol before replacing a tire with a different size. It also calls for checking overall diameter, rim width, wheel offset, and clearance.
| Specification | What to verify | Why it matters to rubbing and safety |
|---|---|---|
| Tire size and overall diameter | Compare the installed size with the placard and approved alternatives. | A larger diameter can reach the fender sooner during compression and can affect ABS, speedometer, odometer, sensors, and vehicle computers. |
| Tire section width | Confirm the actual tire width and the wheel width range approved for it. | More width can reduce outer fender clearance or inner clearance to suspension parts. |
| Load capacity | Do not install a tire with less capacity than the vehicle specifies. | Load, pressure, and sidewall behavior influence both safety and how the tire moves when the vehicle is loaded. |
| Speed symbol | Match the required rating unless the vehicle and tire manufacturer explicitly approve another choice. | A different rating is not a clearance repair and may change the compliant replacement options. |
| Inflation pressure | Use the vehicle placard pressure, not the maximum molded on the sidewall. | Incorrect pressure can alter the tire’s shape and handling; it should not be used to mask interference. |
| Wheel width and offset | Confirm the wheel is suitable for the tire and places the assembly where the vehicle expects it. | Offset moves the tire inward or outward; width changes can do both and may create contact at the liner, spring, brake, or fender. |
| Bolt circle and hub fit | Verify the bolt circle and that the wheel seats fully on the hub. | A wheel that does not seat correctly can be unsafe and can sit out of its intended position. |
Falken’s tire guidance warns that changing overall diameter can affect ABS, the odometer, speedometer, sensors, and computers. It also notes that larger tires and suspension lifts can change ride height, braking distance, and handling. Those effects are reasons to reject a convenient size change unless it is specifically approved for the vehicle.

A repair sequence that avoids new clearance problems
- Document the symptom. Mark the exact scuff location and note steering angle, suspension movement, load, and weather or road conditions if relevant.
- Compare the installed parts with the vehicle baseline. Check the placard, owner’s manual, and manufacturer fitment information for tire size, load, pressure, speed symbol, diameter, rim width, and offset.
- Correct an unsuitable tire size only when it is confirmed as the cause. Return to an approved size that also meets load, speed, pressure, diameter, and wheel-compatibility requirements. A smaller tire is not automatically safe or compatible.
- Correct wheel width or offset with a vehicle-specific combination. Confirm the bolt circle, hub seating, brake clearance, and suspension clearance. Tire Rack’s wheel-installation manual directs installers to test-fit the wheel and inspect clearance before final installation.
- Repair a loose or damaged liner with vehicle-correct parts or service information. Replace missing fasteners and damaged sections; do not assume that cutting or reshaping the liner is safe for every model.
- Have altered suspension or alignment assessed professionally. A technician should check ride height, spring and damper condition, bushings, steering stops, and alignment geometry. Suspension alterations or unapproved tires can adversely affect handling and stability.
- Repeat the complete clearance check. Turn the steering fully left and right and inspect every wheel position through full suspension jounce and rebound before returning the vehicle to normal use.
Choose the fix that matches the confirmed cause
When the tire is too large or otherwise unapproved
An OE-size or otherwise vehicle-approved replacement tire is appropriate only when inspection establishes that the current tire is oversized or unsuitable. Confirm the complete specification, not just the first numbers in the size code. The replacement must fit the wheel, carry the required load, meet the speed requirement, use the correct pressure, and provide acceptable overall diameter. Have the shop verify the clearance after mounting; sidewall shape can differ between tire models with the same nominal size.

A wheel with less suitable offset may push the outer shoulder into the fender, while another may move the inner sidewall into the spring, strut, brake, or control arm. Select a wheel and tire combination documented for the vehicle rather than trying to hide the interference with aggressive camber or toe. The wheel must have the correct bolt circle and seat fully on the hub. Tire Rack’s installation manual specifically calls for a test fit and a clearance inspection; its stated 3–4 mm figure applies to wheel-to-brake clearance in that manual, not as a universal tire-to-fender specification.
When the fender liner or fastener is the problem
A liner that has pulled away can be the simplest fault, but it still needs a proper repair. Use the correct fasteners and replacement sections, check for a bent mounting point, and make sure the repaired liner cannot fold into the tire during steering or compression. Do not use a temporary tie, adhesive, or an arbitrary cut as a permanent solution where it could contact the tire or expose wiring.

When suspension height or condition has changed
Inspect springs, struts, shocks, control-arm bushings, ball joints, wheel bearings, and steering components for wear or damage. A sagging spring can reduce bump clearance; a bent arm or shifted mount can alter both wheel position and alignment. If the vehicle has been lifted or lowered, verify the resulting travel, brake-line routing, alignment range, and manufacturer approval. A lift is not a substitute for correct tire and wheel fitment.
Why common “quick fixes” can create another problem
- Installing an even larger tire: increases the diameter or width that may already be causing contact and can alter braking, handling, and electronic-system readings.
- Adding a spacer: moves the wheel outward and may solve one inner contact while creating fender, bearing-load, or fastener-engagement issues. It requires vehicle-specific engineering and verification, not a universal thickness.
- Using aggressive alignment settings: can reduce one edge’s contact while causing uneven wear, poorer braking, or unstable handling. Alignment should restore the vehicle’s specified geometry, not conceal an incompatible assembly.
- Trimming the liner or fender: removes material without proving that the tire will clear the brake, shock tower, suspension, or wiring during all movement. The available guidance does not establish a general cutting procedure safe for every vehicle.
- Rolling or pulling the fender: changes body structure, paint integrity, and the shape of the wheel opening. It should never be the default response to an undiagnosed rub.
- Raising inflation pressure: is not a safe clearance adjustment. Use the pressure on the vehicle placard and investigate the mechanical cause.
Check the whole clearance envelope, not just the visible fender
The tire must clear more than the outer lip. The safety warnings document hosted by Tire Rack states: “All wheel positions should be checked for proper clearance in fender wells, brake components, shock towers, and other suspension components.” Apply that instruction after every fitment or suspension change.
| Check | Position or condition | What a pass requires |
|---|---|---|
| Steering clearance | Front wheels at full left and full right lock. | No contact with the liner, bumper edge, fender lip, suspension, or brake parts. |
| Compression clearance | Suspension at jounce, including the loaded condition that caused the noise. | The tire does not touch the fender, liner, spring, damper, or structural parts. |
| Rebound clearance | Suspension at rebound or droop. | Brake hoses, wiring, and suspension components remain clear and properly routed. |
| Inner clearance | Sidewall and wheel near the strut, shock tower, spring, control arm, and brake assembly. | No interference throughout movement; the wheel remains fully seated. |
| All wheel positions | Front and rear, left and right, including the spare if its fitment is changed. | No assumption that one corner represents the others; each position is inspected. |
The manual’s 3–4 mm instruction is specifically for clearance between a wheel and brake components. It should not be presented as a universal minimum gap between a tire and a fender. Vehicle geometry, tire construction, and movement determine the appropriate clearance.

When to use a qualified tire-and-wheel shop
Professional inspection is the prudent route when the tire is damaged, the wheel specification is unknown, the vehicle has suspension modifications, the rub occurs under load, or the contact point is near a brake, spring, shock tower, or steering component. Ask the shop to document the installed tire size, wheel width and offset, measured ride height, alignment readings, and the exact location of contact.
Provide the shop with the placard and owner’s manual information, wheel documentation, and photographs of the scuffing. Tell the technician the precise trigger rather than only saying that the car “rubs.” A useful work order states, for example, that the left front touches the liner at full right lock, or that both rear shoulders mark the lip only with three passengers. Those details direct the inspection toward the relevant part of the clearance envelope.
A practical decision framework
| Confirmed finding | Appropriate next action | Do not use as a substitute |
|---|---|---|
| Current tire is outside approved size and is the contact source. | Evaluate an approved replacement meeting load, speed, pressure, diameter, and wheel requirements. | A still-larger tire or pressure change. |
| Wheel width or offset places the assembly incorrectly. | Choose a documented vehicle-compatible wheel/tire package; test-fit it. | Aggressive camber, random spacers, or ignoring inner clearance. |
| Liner is loose or damaged. | Repair its attachment or replace it with vehicle-correct parts. | Unverified cutting or temporary fastening near the tire. |
| Suspension component, ride height, or alignment is abnormal. | Repair the mechanical fault and restore appropriate geometry with qualified service. | Bodywork that hides the contact. |
| No cause is confirmed. | Continue diagnosis and complete full-lock and full-travel checks before changing parts. | Ordering a generic “rubbing fix.” |
Final verification before normal driving
- There are no fresh marks on the tire shoulder or sidewall.
- The liner, fender lip, bumper edge, brake parts, shock tower, springs, and suspension arms remain clear.
- Both steering directions have been checked at full lock.
- Compression and rebound have been checked at each affected wheel position.
- The tire meets the vehicle’s load, speed, pressure, diameter, and wheel-compatibility requirements.
- Wheel fasteners are installed and torqued according to the vehicle or wheel manufacturer’s instructions.
- After a short cautious drive, the same areas are re-inspected for new transfer marks or damage.
Tire Rack’s wheel-installation manual says, “The best place to find the correct procedure for tire/wheel removal is in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.” Follow that procedure and the vehicle manufacturer’s torque and safety requirements rather than relying on a generic fitment recipe.
