Yes—you can control a supported Tesla from an Apple Watch
Tesla’s official Apple Watch experience lets you use your wrist to lock or unlock the car with Watch Key, open the frunk, check charging status, open the charge port, and turn the climate system on. To use it, you currently need the Tesla app version 4.39.5 or later, Tesla vehicle software version 2024.44.25 or later, and an Apple Watch running watchOS 11 or later.

Exact compatibility still depends on the Apple Watch hardware, Tesla model, vehicle software, and the particular feature you are trying to use. Tesla’s phone app supports more functions than Tesla currently documents for the watch app, so do not assume that every phone-app control appears on your wrist.

- A paired iPhone and Apple Watch. Keep the iPhone paired to the watch during the initial setup.
- Tesla app version 4.39.5 or later on the iPhone.
- Tesla vehicle software version 2024.44.25 or later.
- watchOS 11 or later. The Apple Watch must be capable of running the required watchOS version.
- Mobile Access enabled in the Tesla’s touchscreen settings.
- Proximity to the vehicle when pairing Watch Key.
If you need a compatible wearable, look for an Apple Watch with watchOS 11 support, then confirm the current watchOS and Tesla requirements before buying. The watchOS requirement is more useful than relying on a particular Apple Watch generation, because compatibility can change with software support.
How to set up Tesla on your Apple Watch
- Pair the iPhone and Apple Watch. Complete the normal Apple Watch setup in Apple’s Watch app if you have not already done so.
- Update the Tesla app. On the iPhone, install Tesla app version 4.39.5 or later.
- Update the Apple Watch. Install watchOS 11 or later if the watch supports it.
- Update the Tesla. Check that the vehicle is running software version 2024.44.25 or later.
- Enable Mobile Access. On the Tesla touchscreen, look for Controls > Safety or Controls > Safety & Security, then turn on Allow Mobile Access. Tesla’s menu wording can vary by vehicle and software version.
- Open the Tesla app on the watch. From the Apple Watch app grid, tap Tesla.
- Configure Watch Key when prompted. Stand close to the Tesla and follow the pairing instructions in the app.
During Watch Key setup, Tesla says that temporarily turning off Bluetooth on the mobile device may help if several phone keys are connected and pairing will not complete. This is a setup workaround, not a reason to leave Bluetooth disabled afterward.

What the Tesla Apple Watch app can do
Tesla’s documented Apple Watch controls currently include the following:
| Function | What it does |
|---|---|
| Lock and unlock | Uses Watch Key to let the watch act as a nearby vehicle key. |
| Open the frunk | Sends the frunk-opening command from the watch interface. |
| View charge status | Shows the vehicle’s charging information. |
| Open the charge port | Opens the vehicle’s charge-port door when supported. |
| Turn climate control on | Starts the vehicle’s climate system remotely through the available app connection. |
Tesla’s iPhone app listing describes additional phone features, such as vehicle location, charging controls, media controls, lights, horn, panoramic-roof control, and Summon where supported. Those are not automatically Apple Watch features. Use only the controls that the current watch app actually displays.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Watch Key is different from a remote Tesla command
Watch Key is best understood as the Apple Watch acting as a nearby Bluetooth key. After pairing, it can lock or unlock the Tesla in a similar way to a phone key, without requiring you to press a button in the app.
Remote controls are different. A remote command depends on communication between the device, Tesla’s app service, and the vehicle. Depending on the command and your setup, the watch may need an available connection through the paired iPhone, Wi-Fi, or cellular service. A watch that is offline, an absent iPhone, a sleeping vehicle, or a weak connection can change what works.
For that reason, do not assume that every watch control works when the iPhone is left at home, the Apple Watch has no network connection, or the Tesla is parked somewhere with poor connectivity. Watch Key’s nearby lock-and-unlock behavior should not be treated as proof that every remote command will work in the same circumstances.

How to use the watch after setup
Lock or unlock the Tesla
Open the Tesla app on the Apple Watch and use the lock or unlock control shown by the app. For Watch Key operation, remain close enough to the car for the watch’s Bluetooth key connection. If the command does not respond, try waking the watch and moving closer to the vehicle before troubleshooting the app or vehicle connection.
Check charging status
Open Tesla on the watch and view the charging information presented by the app. Treat a stale status as a connection or vehicle wake-up issue—not as confirmation that a recent command succeeded.
Open the charge port
Use the charge-port control in the watch app when you are at the vehicle or preparing to connect a charging cable. If the port does not open, verify that the watch is connected and that the vehicle is awake or reachable before trying again.
Start climate control
Tap the climate control option exposed by the Tesla watch app. The command may take time to reach a sleeping vehicle, and the result can depend on the watch, iPhone connection, Tesla model, and vehicle software.
Open the frunk
Use the frunk control only when you have a clear reason to open the front trunk. Remote vehicle commands are security-sensitive; check the vehicle and surrounding area before sending one.

Apple Watch Tesla setup problems and fixes
The Tesla app is missing from the Apple Watch
- Confirm that the iPhone and Apple Watch are paired.
- Update the Tesla app on the iPhone.
- Update the watch to watchOS 11 or later, if the hardware supports it.
- Restart the watch and iPhone after installing updates.
- Check the watch’s available software update rather than assuming its model is compatible.
If the watch cannot install watchOS 11, it may not be capable of running the current Tesla watch experience.
Watch Key pairing fails
- Stand next to the Tesla.
- Confirm that the iPhone is paired to the Apple Watch.
- Verify the Tesla app, vehicle software, and watchOS versions.
- Check that Allow Mobile Access is enabled under the vehicle’s Safety settings.
- If several phone keys are connected over Bluetooth, temporarily turn off Bluetooth on the mobile device and try the Watch Key setup again, as Tesla suggests.
- Restore the phone’s Bluetooth connection after setup and test the key near the vehicle.
The app opens, but the vehicle status is old
A stale status usually points to a connectivity or wake-up problem. Check the watch’s connection, keep the paired iPhone nearby if your setup relies on it, and allow time for the Tesla to respond. Do not repeatedly send commands or assume that a delayed status means a command definitely failed or succeeded. Confirm the physical result at the vehicle when it matters.
A control shown in the phone app is not on the watch
This is expected. Tesla’s broader phone-app feature list is not a promise that the same controls are available in the watch interface. Use the official watch controls Tesla currently exposes, and use the iPhone app for functions that are not shown on the watch.

Yes, third-party apps advertise additional Tesla controls and integrations, but they are separate from Tesla’s official app and should be evaluated separately.

For most owners, the official Tesla app is the sensible first choice: it avoids adding another service to a function Tesla now supports directly. A third-party app may be worth investigating if you specifically need complications, Siri Shortcuts, statistics, queued commands, or another feature that Tesla’s watch app does not expose.
Compatibility and safety caveats
- Do not assume every Apple Watch generation supports the Tesla app; watchOS 11 capability is the practical starting point.
- Do not assume every Tesla model exposes every feature in the same way.
- Watch Key and remote app commands use different connection paths.
- Remote operation may depend on the iPhone, internet or cellular connectivity, vehicle state, and Tesla software.
- Never treat a delayed app status as proof that a command completed.
- Recheck Tesla’s current app, vehicle-software, and watchOS requirements before buying hardware or troubleshooting an update-related problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to control a Tesla from an Apple Watch?
You currently need Tesla app version 4.39.5 or later, Tesla vehicle software version 2024.44.25 or later, and an Apple Watch running watchOS 11 or later. The iPhone and watch must be paired, and the vehicle’s Allow Mobile Access setting should be enabled.
What can the Tesla Apple Watch app do?
Tesla documents Apple Watch controls for locking and unlocking through Watch Key, opening the frunk, viewing charge status, opening the charge port, and turning climate control on. The watch does not necessarily offer every function found in Tesla’s iPhone app.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Tesla Watch Key work the same as remote app control?
Watch Key is a nearby Bluetooth vehicle-key function. Remote commands use app and vehicle connectivity, so their behavior can depend on the iPhone, internet or cellular connection, vehicle state, Tesla model, and software. Nearby key operation does not guarantee that every remote command will work without an iPhone or network connection.
Are there third-party Tesla apps for Apple Watch?
Yes, Tesla-related third-party apps such as Watchla and Remote for Tesla advertise additional Apple Watch features. They are independent of Tesla, however, and should be reviewed for permissions, account-access methods, supported vehicles, privacy, and security before use.
The Bottom Line
The official Tesla Apple Watch app is currently the simplest way to control selected Tesla functions from your wrist. Install Tesla app version 4.39.5 or later, use a vehicle on software 2024.44.25 or later, run watchOS 11 or later, enable Mobile Access, and pair Watch Key beside the car. Expect lock/unlock, frunk, charging status, charge-port, and climate controls—not a complete copy of the iPhone app.
