Clean a throttle body only by following the service procedure for your exact vehicle. Some procedures allow access through the intake duct; others require removing the throttle body, applying cleaner to a cloth rather than spraying it, protecting factory coatings and electronics, and completing a scan-tool or other relearn afterward. The steps below explain how to approach the job safely without treating one make’s procedure as universal.

Before you start: confirm your vehicle’s procedure

Check the owner’s manual or factory service information for the exact make, model, year, and engine. Confirm the specified cleaner, whether the throttle body must be removed, how to isolate its electrical system, what to do with any gasket, and whether a reset or learning procedure is required. If you cannot identify the correct procedure or remove the intake duct safely, stop and get professional help.

Procedures differ in important ways. Mitsubishi examples require disconnecting the electronic throttle connector and removing the assembly; they direct the technician to apply solvent to a cloth, protect the motor and sensor, preserve the molybdenum coating, and initialize learned values with a scan tool. A cited Honda Fit/Jazz ETCS procedure also removes the assembly, calls for Honda genuine carburetor cleaner, warns against spraying directly and cleaning the coated bearing area, and specifies an ECM/PCM reset and ETCS learn. These instructions apply to those procedures—not automatically to other vehicles. Mitsubishi service procedure; 2023 Mitsubishi service procedure; Honda Fit/Jazz ETCS procedure.

What you need

  • The cleaner specified by your vehicle’s service information. “Throttle body cleaner” is a useful general product category, not a guarantee that any formulation is approved for your vehicle. Mobil advises against carburetor cleaner in its general guide, while the cited Honda procedure specifically calls for Honda genuine carburetor cleaner; follow your vehicle’s instruction rather than applying either recommendation universally. Mobil’s general throttle-body guide.
  • Eye and skin protection, clean lint-free cloths, and a flashlight.
  • Only the hand tools needed for your vehicle’s fasteners—such as the correct socket, screwdriver, or Torx bit. Use a soft brush only if the service procedure allows one; hard bristles can damage some coatings. Mobil tool guidance.

How to clean a throttle body

  1. Set up safely. Work outdoors on a level surface with good light. Cleaner is volatile and flammable: avoid smoking and wear eye and skin protection. Keep ignition and battery-disconnection steps consistent with the vehicle’s service instructions. Keep tools, cloths, and the cleaner nozzle away from the open intake so nothing can fall inside. Mobil safety guidance.
  2. Prevent throttle-plate movement from injuring you. An electronic throttle can move unexpectedly and pinch fingers. Follow the vehicle’s instructions for shutting off its driving circuits before touching the plate; do not put fingers near it while the system can operate. Mitsubishi warns that a moving plate can catch and injure a finger. Mitsubishi service procedure.
  3. Expose the throttle body as directed. Some general DIY guidance describes removing intake ducting to gain access. The cited Mitsubishi and Honda procedures require removing the throttle-body assembly. Do not assume that cleaning in place is acceptable for your vehicle. Avoid disturbing wiring, and disconnect electrical connectors only as the service instructions specify. Mobil’s general guide.
  4. Clean gently using the approved method. Where the procedure calls for it, put cleaner on a clean cloth and wipe deposits away gently. Do not make direct spraying into the throttle body your default: Mitsubishi and Honda procedures specifically warn against it. Keep solvent away from the motor, sensor, shaft, bearing, and any coated area identified by the manufacturer. Do not scrub a coating off or force an electronic plate open. Mitsubishi service procedure; Honda Fit/Jazz ETCS procedure.
  5. Reassemble in the prescribed order. Refit the throttle body if removed, then reconnect ducts, hoses, clamps, and electrical connectors as specified. Inspect disturbed connections and gaskets and make sure the intake path is clear before starting the engine. The Mitsubishi example reconnects the intake hose and electronic throttle connector after installation; other vehicles may differ. Mitsubishi service procedure.
  6. Perform the required reset or relearn. Follow the vehicle’s exact instructions. Depending on the procedure, this may require scan-tool initialization, an ECM/PCM reset, or throttle-system learning. There is no universal pedal sequence that can be safely recommended for every vehicle. Mitsubishi service procedure; Honda Fit/Jazz ETCS procedure.
  7. Check the result. Start and check the vehicle as directed by its manual. Follow model-specific guidance if idle is initially rough after cleaning or battery disconnection. If a warning light, abnormal idle, stalling, or drivability problem persists, seek diagnosis rather than assuming another cleaning will fix it. Mobil’s general guide.

Should you clean it, and how often?

A dirty throttle body can be one possible contributor to rough idle, stumbling on initial acceleration, or stalling on a warmed engine, but those symptoms do not prove it is the cause. Mobil’s guide says a noticeable drivability difference may or may not follow cleaning. Treat cleaning as a maintenance procedure called for by your vehicle’s service information or an appropriate diagnosis—not a guaranteed repair.

There is no universal cleaning interval established here. Mobil’s 2021 guide says routine fuel-injection maintenance should be considered above 75,000 miles; that is not a factory throttle-body-cleaning schedule and should not be applied to every vehicle. The same guide estimates about 45 minutes for the job, but actual time depends on the vehicle and whether removal and learning procedures are required. Mobil’s guide.
