Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →No dog car harness can promise safety in every crash. The most useful starting point is an independent test record for the exact harness model, followed by careful attention to fit, vehicle placement and the manufacturer’s attachment instructions. One current example is the Center for Pet Safety’s Sleepypod Clickit Range record: CPS lists it as passed and five-star after testing in November 2024. That result is specific to the named product and test conditions—not a guarantee for every dog, size, vehicle or collision.
What makes a dog car harness meaningfully safer?
Look for evidence tied to the exact product, not just claims such as “crash tested,” “seat-belt compatible” or “reinforced webbing.” A useful test record identifies the model, protocol, date, result and the sizes or range covered. It helps distinguish a tested restraint from a product whose safety language is not backed by comparable evidence.
Even a strong test result has limits. ASTM’s current listed specification for dog vehicle harnesses is F3725-25, Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Dog Harnesses for Motor Vehicle Safety. ASTM describes the test as measuring durability and performance during a motor-vehicle crash, and says it does not assure survival in every crash. Testing is evidence about performance under specified conditions, not proof that a dog will avoid injury in every real-world collision.
What does the current Sleepypod Clickit Range test record say?
The Center for Pet Safety (CPS) product record for the Sleepypod Clickit Range lists a November 2024 test, a pass result and a five-star rating. The record names protocol CPS-001-014.01, test number V241364F, video evidence and a test-dog weight of 110 lb. CPS lists Small, Medium, Large and X-Large sizes.

The 110 lb figure is the weight of the test dog shown in the record; it is not a recommended dog-weight limit. Nor should the result be transferred to another Sleepypod model or a different harness. CPS’s separate 2013 study named the Clickit Utility, not the Clickit Range, so that historical result is not the test record for the currently listed Range model. The test dogs used by CPS are weighted, instrumented simulants, not live dogs.
See the CPS Clickit Range product record for the product-specific details and video evidence.

How should you compare harness safety claims?
There is not enough current, comparable evidence here to rank several harnesses best to worst. When evaluating a product, check these points before relying on its safety claims:
- Exact model: Match the product name on the harness and packaging to the independent test record. A result for one model does not establish the performance of a related model.
- Test details: Look for the test date, protocol, result, rating, size coverage and any published test evidence. “Crash tested” without those details is less informative.
- Fit and instructions: Choose the appropriate size for your dog and follow that manufacturer’s specific instructions for fitting and vehicle attachment.
- Connection setup: Check how the harness is designed to connect to the vehicle restraint. Do not assume an extra strap or add-on preserves the tested configuration.
- Vehicle placement: Confirm the product’s instructions for your vehicle and secure the dog in the back seat where possible.
CPS says its Certified program is voluntary. Participation represents a manufacturer commitment to meet independently developed safety standards, monitor product quality control and make a commitment to truthful marketing; certification is not a promise of injury-free travel.

Read CPS’s extension-tether guidance before adding accessories. CPS warns that extension tethers and zipline-style devices can negate crash-protection claims and recommends securing pets in the back seat.
Why older crash-test claims need context
Historical CPS findings can explain why a dated result matters, but they cannot stand in for a current product record. In a 2011 pilot assessment, CPS reported a “100 percent failure rate” for the four restraints it assessed under conditions based on FMVSS 213. That figure describes only those four restraints and that pilot protocol; it does not describe all harnesses, current models or the Clickit Range.

- PADDED & LIGHTWEIGHT: A design that connects directly to your car seat belt, this crash tested harness provides a strong yet comfortable safety car harness for your pet.
- FULLY REFLECTIVE FABRIC: The front chest piece ensures hi visibility in all situations at any time of day.

- DOG WALKING HARNESS: This flexible car harness for dogs can be used as a conventional harness for walks, with both front and back leash connection points.
FMVSS 213 should not be presented as an official dog-harness standard. CPS said the pilot used conditions generally referenced by some harness makers because a standardized pet-harness test did not exist at that time. ASTM now lists F3725-25 specifically for dog vehicle harnesses. For background, see CPS’s 2013 harness study and its 2011 pilot study.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you attach a dog harness to a seat belt?
Use the connection method specified by the harness manufacturer for that exact model and vehicle setup. The available evidence does not establish one universal attachment method that works for every harness. In particular, do not add an extension tether or zipline-style device: CPS warns those additions can change the restraint setup and negate crash-protection claims. Keep the dog in the back seat where possible, and check the harness fit and attachment before each trip.
