How to Check Your Tesla’s Software Version and Update Status

Use Controls > Software on the Tesla touchscreen to check update status, Software to see the installed version, and the Tesla app to view the version beneath your VIN. This guide explains rollout timing, Wi‑Fi requirements, installation rules, troubleshooting, and recall checks.

By CarCody Team

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the Tesla touchscreen, open Controls > Software to see whether an update is available and what stage it has reached. Tap Software to see the installed version, or open the Tesla app and look beneath your vehicle’s VIN. Use Software > Release Notes for the changes and any operating instructions. Keep the car on a reliable Wi‑Fi connection for downloading, and remember that Tesla releases software in rolling waves rather than to every vehicle at once.

Know which software question you are answering

Tesla’s interface separates the version already installed from the availability and progress of the next update. Checking one does not automatically answer the others.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Installed version: the release currently running in the vehicle.
  • Update availability: whether Tesla has made an eligible package available to this vehicle.
  • Update progress: whether that package is checking, downloading, waiting to install, installing, or complete.

A different Tesla may show a newer number without anything being wrong with yours. Tesla distributes releases over time, and timing can depend on the vehicle’s configuration, market region, and other factors tied to a particular release. The vehicle can therefore be current for its eligibility group even when another car has a newer version.

For a useful record, write down both the complete version number and the date you checked it. Then record whether the car reported that it was up to date, offered an update, or was already downloading or installing. Keeping those details together prevents confusion when the app and touchscreen are viewed at different times.

Check the installed software version

From the vehicle touchscreen

  1. Park the vehicle and wake the center touchscreen.
  2. Tap Software.
  3. Read the current vehicle software version shown on that page.

The touchscreen is the authoritative place to see what is installed in that vehicle. From the same software area, you can open Release Notes to read the changes associated with the current or most recent release. Tesla’s official support instructions are at Tesla Software Updates.

Do not confuse the displayed version with a download that has merely been offered. Until installation finishes, the installed number remains the version currently running the car. Check again after the update reports completion if you need to verify the release that is actually active.

From the Tesla app

  1. Open the Tesla app and select the vehicle’s main page.
  2. Look below the vehicle identification number (VIN).
  3. Read the software version listed there.

The app is useful when you are away from the car, but the touchscreen exposes the vehicle’s update controls and live status. If the app and car appear inconsistent immediately after an update, check the touchscreen again after the vehicle has finished communicating with Tesla’s servers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the built-in manual when labels differ

Open the on-screen Owner’s Manual from the vehicle’s touchscreen if a menu, button, or automatic-update option does not match these steps. Tesla says the manual is tailored to the car’s purchased features, configuration, market region, and software version. Its instructions can therefore differ between models or between software releases. Tesla also states that release notes take precedence if they conflict with general manual information; see the Model 3 Owner Information explanation.

Check whether an update is available

  1. On the touchscreen, tap Controls.
  2. Tap Software.
  3. Wait while the vehicle displays “Checking for updates…”.
  4. Read the resulting status. If no package is pending, the screen says “Your car software is up to date.” If Tesla has offered an update, it says “Update available” and shows a yellow download icon.

An available update can also appear as a Software Update section on the Tesla app’s main page. The app may let you start the update, although the exact controls and automatic-update behavior vary by model and software version.

Screen wording or icon What it means What to do
“Checking for updates…” The vehicle is querying Tesla for an eligible release. Leave the software page open long enough for the check to finish and keep the car connected as usual.
“Your car software is up to date.” No pending update is currently offered to this vehicle. No action is required. A newer release on another Tesla does not by itself indicate a fault.
“Update available” with a yellow download icon An update is offered, but the vehicle is not currently connected to Wi‑Fi for downloading. Connect the car to a reliable Wi‑Fi network, then return to the Software page.
Green download icon The download has begun. Keep the Wi‑Fi connection stable until the download completes.
“Software Update Complete” in the app The app has received Tesla’s completion notification. Confirm the installed version on the touchscreen if you need to record the exact release number.

The quoted status text is documented in Tesla’s Software Updates guidance.

If the page remains on the checking message, wait for the vehicle to complete its query before concluding that no update exists. A completed check that says the car is up to date is different from an update that is available but waiting for Wi‑Fi.

Why your Tesla may not have the newest release yet

Tesla uses a staged, rolling rollout. Vehicles do not all receive an update simultaneously, and Tesla does not send a release to an individual vehicle on request. Eligibility and timing can reflect the car’s configuration, region, and release-specific rollout decisions.

The touchscreen’s Advanced software-update preference is intended to receive eligible updates sooner. Tesla says this setting does not enroll a vehicle in the Early Access Program, does not guarantee placement in the first release group, and does not override Tesla’s rollout process. Seeing “Your car software is up to date” is therefore compatible with another owner reporting a higher version number.

That rollout behavior also explains why comparing version numbers with an online post or a friend’s vehicle is not a reliable eligibility test. Compare your car with its own status message, configuration and region, rather than treating another vehicle’s release as a deadline Tesla must meet for yours.

Prepare the vehicle for a reliable download

Connect to Wi‑Fi

In most cases, the vehicle needs Wi‑Fi to download an update. Tesla recommends leaving Wi‑Fi enabled and connected because a stable connection makes delivery faster and more reliable. Tesla’s support guidance specifies a stable connection of at least three bars for downloading. If the yellow download icon remains on screen, the car has an update available but is not connected to Wi‑Fi; the icon changes to green when downloading starts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Improve coverage without buying unnecessary equipment

Park within dependable range of your existing router or access point. If the garage or driveway is outside that signal, repositioning the vehicle, improving the access point’s location, or using a properly configured extender or mesh node may help. Networking hardware is not a Tesla requirement; it is relevant only when the parking location cannot maintain the connection Tesla requires. You do not need to buy a particular brand or product merely to check the version or status.

Keep the car available for the update

Download and installation are separate phases. During the download, avoid turning off the Wi‑Fi network or moving the car out of coverage. Before installation begins, move the vehicle to a safe parking location where it can remain stationary for the entire process.

A strong connection at the start is not enough if the car later loses coverage. Check the parking location, router or access point, and the vehicle’s Wi‑Fi connection before assuming that a delayed download is a software fault.

Understand installation, scheduling, and charging

When the package has downloaded, Tesla offers an immediate installation option or the ability to schedule it for later. Some vehicles also expose automatic-installation settings. The exact controls can change by model and software version, so follow the prompts shown on your car and consult its on-screen manual when they differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens while the update installs

  • The vehicle must be parked and cannot be driven during installation.
  • If the car is plugged in, charging pauses while installation runs and resumes afterward.
  • Some updates take several hours; do not plan to drive the vehicle until the process is finished.
  • Installation cannot be canceled after the install phase has started.

Tesla’s model-specific description of the download and installation phases, including the Wi‑Fi indicators and driving restriction, appears in the Model S Owner’s Manual: Software Updates.

A practical installation sequence

  1. Read the release notes and any warnings before accepting the update.
  2. Verify that the vehicle is parked where it can remain undisturbed for several hours.
  3. Choose Install now or set a later time using the touchscreen or the app’s available control.
  4. Do not attempt to drive, open a trip, or interrupt power while installation is in progress.
  5. After completion, check Software on the touchscreen and confirm the new version.

Scheduling is useful when the car must be available at a particular time, but it does not shorten the installation. Allow enough stationary time for a process Tesla says can take several hours, and verify completion before relying on the vehicle for a trip.

Read release notes before and after updating

From the touchscreen, open Software > Release Notes. These notes describe the changes in the current or most recent software and can include operating or safety instructions that are more specific than general owner information. Read them before scheduling an update if you need to know whether a feature, control behavior, or temporary limitation affects your plans.

Release notes are also the best place to explain an unexpected interface change after installation. If their instructions conflict with a generic manual passage, Tesla says to follow the release notes for that software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the notes as a confirmation step, not as a substitute for checking the version. The version page tells you what is installed; the notes explain what that release changed and how Tesla says to use it.

Troubleshoot an update that appears stuck

First check the connection and phase

Confirm whether the vehicle is downloading or installing. During downloading, verify that Wi‑Fi is connected and provides a stable signal. During installation, remember that a parked, undrivable vehicle and a paused charging session are expected behavior rather than evidence of failure.

If completion has not appeared after three hours

Tesla’s support guidance says that if more than three hours have passed since the update started and the app has not displayed “Software Update Complete”, reboot the touchscreen:

  1. Remain safely parked.
  2. Press and hold both steering-wheel scroll buttons for about 20 seconds.
  3. Keep holding until the Tesla “T” appears on the screen.
  4. Allow the touchscreen to restart, then check the app and the Software page again.

This reboots the touchscreen interface; it does not provide a way to cancel an installation that has already begun.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the update still fails or makes no progress

Schedule a Tesla service appointment when the update remains unsuccessful after the supported reboot step. Include the displayed status, the time the update began, the current software version, and whether the car was downloading or installing. Those details help service staff distinguish a connectivity problem from an installation fault.

Do not repeatedly interrupt power or attempt to drive while the installation phase is active. The supported sequence is to verify the phase, allow the required time, perform the stated touchscreen reboot after more than three hours without completion, and contact service if progress still does not resume.

Check software separately from a safety recall

A software version number alone does not establish whether every recall applies to a particular vehicle. For a recall-related update, check the vehicle’s recall status by VIN and compare the installed release with the remedy’s stated minimum version.

Tesla’s example for a back-up-camera-feed recall shows how a remedy can require a specified minimum software release. Use the current Tesla recall information and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s tools for the actual vehicle, because recall applicability and required versions can change. Tesla’s example is documented at Update Vehicle Firmware to Correct Loss of Back Up Camera Feed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recall verification checklist

  • Record the VIN and the exact installed software version from the touchscreen.
  • Check the vehicle’s current recall status by VIN.
  • Read the recall remedy’s minimum-version requirement, if one is stated.
  • Do not assume that a newer-looking number automatically proves the remedy is complete; confirm the VIN result and the release requirement together.

A complete check-and-update routine

  1. Open the Tesla app or the vehicle touchscreen and note the installed version.
  2. On the touchscreen, go to Controls > Software and wait for the update check to finish.
  3. If the screen says the car is up to date, remember that Tesla’s rolling rollout means another vehicle may still show a newer release.
  4. If an update is available, connect to Wi‑Fi with at least a stable three-bar signal and wait for the green download icon.
  5. Open Software > Release Notes and read the changes and instructions.
  6. Install immediately or schedule the update according to the controls shown for your model.
  7. Keep the vehicle parked and undriven during installation; expect charging to pause and resume afterward.
  8. After completion, verify the new version on the touchscreen and look for the app’s “Software Update Complete” notification.
  9. If completion has not appeared after more than three hours, reboot the touchscreen with both scroll buttons for about 20 seconds. Arrange service if the update still fails or does not progress.
  10. For recall work, perform a separate VIN-based recall check instead of relying on the version number alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my Tesla software version?

On the touchscreen, tap Software and read the installed version. You can also open the Tesla app, select the vehicle’s main page, and read the version beneath the VIN.

How do I know whether my Tesla is up to date?

Tap Controls > Software and wait for “Checking for updates…” to finish. “Your car software is up to date” means no pending update is currently offered to that vehicle.

Why does another Tesla have a newer software version?

Tesla rolls releases out over time. Configuration, market region and release-specific rollout factors can make another vehicle eligible earlier; a newer number on that car does not by itself mean yours has a problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does the yellow download icon mean?

It means an update is available but the vehicle is not connected to Wi‑Fi for downloading. Connect to a stable Wi‑Fi network; the icon becomes green when downloading begins.

Can I force Tesla to send me an update?

No. Tesla does not send an update to an individual vehicle on request. The Advanced preference is intended to receive eligible updates sooner, but it does not guarantee first release-group placement or enroll the car in the Early Access Program.

Can I drive or charge while Tesla installs an update?

No. The vehicle must remain parked and cannot be driven during installation. If it is plugged in, charging pauses during installation and resumes afterward.

What should I do if the update has not completed after three hours?

If the app has not shown “Software Update Complete” more than three hours after the update started, hold both steering-wheel scroll buttons for about 20 seconds until the Tesla “T” appears. If progress still does not resume, schedule Tesla service.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a software version prove a safety recall is fixed?

Not by itself. Check the vehicle’s recall status by VIN and compare the installed release with the recall remedy’s stated minimum version using current Tesla or NHTSA tools.

Do I need to buy special equipment to check or update the software?

No product is required to view the version or status. Wi‑Fi is normally needed for downloading; networking equipment is relevant only if the vehicle cannot maintain a stable connection where it is parked.

The Bottom Line

Use Software to record the installed version and Controls > Software to check availability and progress. Keep the Tesla on Wi‑Fi with a stable three-bar signal for downloading, read the release notes, and leave the vehicle parked during installation. If completion has not appeared after more than three hours, reboot the touchscreen with both scroll buttons for about 20 seconds and contact Tesla service if the update still fails. Check recalls separately by VIN.
