To check whether your Ford has an open safety recall, search its 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN) on Ford’s recall lookup page or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recalls page. NHTSA also offers a license-plate search and a free SaferCar app for recall alerts. If a safety recall needs a repair, contact a Ford dealership and follow the notice’s instructions; recall repairs at a manufacturer’s dealership are free.
A lookup is a way to check whether a specific vehicle currently has an unrepaired recall listed. It is not a complete history of every recall, completed repair, or service campaign. If a result is clear, read what that result does and does not cover; if a recall appears, follow its vehicle-specific directions rather than guessing how urgent it is.

Check your Ford’s recall status
A VIN search is the most direct way to check a particular vehicle. Ford’s lookup lets you enter the VIN, and owners who sign in can select a vehicle saved in their account’s Garage. For a second check, use NHTSA’s recalls page to search by VIN; its site also supports license-plate searches where available.

These are online lookups. You do not need to buy a scanner, diagnostic reader, or other device to check a vehicle’s official recall status. A VIN scanner or generic OBD diagnostic reader is not a substitute for the manufacturer or NHTSA recall lookup. The status check is done through the online service; if the vehicle needs a recall remedy, it is arranged through a manufacturer dealership.

There are several reasons to check: you may have heard about a new recall, bought or are considering a used Ford, received a notice and want to verify the affected vehicle, or simply want to check periodically. In each case, the central question is whether the particular Ford has an unrepaired recall—not whether a model name appears in a news story. Vehicles with the same model name can have different recall status, so use the vehicle-specific lookup rather than assuming that an announcement does or does not apply to yours.
Find the 17-character VIN
NHTSA says the vehicle identification number (VIN) is visible at the lower left of the windshield. It also appears on the vehicle’s registration card and may appear on its insurance card. The VIN is 17 characters long. Enter it carefully: a lookup is tied to the specific vehicle, so an incorrect character can prevent a useful match or make it harder to confirm the result.
If you cannot read the VIN through the windshield, check the registration card; NHTSA also identifies the insurance card as a place it may appear. The VIN, not a general description such as the vehicle’s model, is the direct way to ask whether a specific Ford has an unrepaired recall. Keep the full number available while using either lookup so you can enter the same vehicle information in both places if you want to compare results.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use Ford’s lookup
- Open Ford’s recall lookup page. This is the manufacturer’s route for checking recall information about a Ford.
- Enter the Ford’s 17-character VIN and submit it. If you have signed in and saved the vehicle, you can choose it from your Garage instead. Signing in is a convenience, not a requirement for the VIN search.
- Read the result and any recall-specific instructions. If it identifies an unrepaired recall, do not stop at the general result; review the directions attached to that recall, including any urgent warning.
- Contact a Ford dealership to arrange the remedy. Ford provides a way to find a dealer for service. A dealer can help with the repair process and clarify what to do if the online result or notice is unclear.
Ford’s saved-vehicle option can make it easier to select a Ford already listed in an account, but a saved vehicle is not necessary to check. If you are checking a vehicle without using a Ford account, the VIN-entry route still answers the vehicle-specific question. The practical value of checking through the manufacturer is that you can start with Ford’s own recall page and then move from the result to dealer service if a remedy is needed.
Check with NHTSA as well
- Open NHTSA’s recalls page. Search using the VIN, or use the license-plate option if available for your search.
- Review any unrepaired recalls associated with the vehicle. Read the details, particularly instructions about whether to drive or park it. Do not treat a recall title alone as a substitute for the actual directions.
- Compare the result with Ford’s lookup if needed. If the Ford and NHTSA results differ or are unclear, contact Ford or a Ford dealer to confirm the vehicle’s current repair status.
NHTSA’s lookup is useful as an independent check and explains the scope and limits of the public search. Its vehicle-specific search is designed to show unrepaired recalls associated with the vehicle. NHTSA also offers the plate search where available, which can be useful when the VIN is not immediately at hand. For a specific current repair-status question, however, a VIN-based lookup is the most direct option described by Ford and NHTSA.
What a recall lookup result tells you
NHTSA’s vehicle-specific lookup is intended to identify recalls for which the particular vehicle still needs a repair. A result such as “0 unrepaired recalls associated with this VIN” means the lookup currently shows no unrepaired recall for that vehicle. It does not mean the vehicle has never been recalled: a recall that has already been repaired will not appear as an unrepaired recall.
That distinction matters if you are checking a Ford you have owned for years or one you are evaluating before purchase. A zero-unrepaired-recalls result answers a narrower question than “Has this vehicle ever had a recall?” It does not provide a complete record of repaired recall work. A completed repair may be the reason a recall no longer appears as an open item in the vehicle-specific lookup.

A clear result also is not a guarantee that no recall or service-related issue exists. NHTSA lists limits to what its lookup displays. Some newly announced recalls may not appear until affected VINs have been identified and added; those lists can be updated continuously. The lookup may omit recalls more than 15 years old unless a manufacturer offers broader coverage, some small-manufacturer recalls, non-safety campaigns, and recalls involving international vehicles. A recall lookup is therefore not a complete record of every past repair or every manufacturer service campaign.
For a newly announced recall, there can be a gap between the announcement and the point at which all affected VINs are identified in the lookup. NHTSA says those VIN lists may be updated continuously. If you search soon after hearing about an announcement and see no result, that is a statement about what is currently displayed for the vehicle, not a guarantee that the vehicle could never be added to the affected list. Recheck after an announcement or contact Ford or a dealer if you have a reason to be concerned.
Recalls do not expire, but lookup coverage has limits
NHTSA says an issued vehicle recall never expires. That principle is different from the limits of a public lookup: the lookup may not display certain older recalls, and it may take time for VINs associated with a newly announced recall to be added. If you are concerned despite a zero result, ask Ford or a dealer to check the vehicle and search again after new recall announcements.
Put another way, the fact that a recall does not expire does not mean every public search displays every recall for every vehicle regardless of age, origin, or timing. NHTSA’s page describes categories its lookup may not show, while its recall guidance says an issued recall itself never expires. These statements answer different questions: one concerns the continued existence of a recall; the other concerns the coverage of a particular lookup tool.
The same distinction helps avoid confusing a recall search with a broader service history. NHTSA’s vehicle-specific search concerns safety recalls and unrepaired recall status. It may not show non-safety campaigns. A clean recall result should therefore be read as “no unrepaired recall currently shown by this lookup,” not “no service work is recommended” or “the vehicle has no service history.”
What to do if your Ford has an open recall
- Read the specific notice. Recall remedies and urgency vary. Follow the instructions shown for your vehicle rather than assuming every recall allows the same use of the vehicle. The notice is the place to look for any special direction tied to the identified recall.
- Pay attention to urgent warnings. If Ford’s notice says “do not drive” or “park outside,” treat that as an immediate safety instruction. Contact Ford or a dealership promptly for guidance on what to do next. Do not dismiss a warning because another recall you have heard about was less urgent.
- Call a Ford dealership. Arrange the recall remedy with a manufacturer dealership and explain that you are calling about an open safety recall. NHTSA says recall repairs at a manufacturer’s dealership are free. If you are uncertain about the result, the dealer or Ford can help confirm the current repair status and explain the next step.
- Ask for help if needed. If you believe a safety defect is not covered by an existing recall, NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline is 888-327-4236.
NHTSA’s consumer guidance says to get an open recall repaired for free at a local dealership. The no-charge point applies to the recall repair through a manufacturer dealership; it is not a reason to delay contacting one when an open recall appears. The lookup itself does not require a physical product purchase, and buying a generic diagnostic device does not complete or replace the recall remedy.
Urgency is vehicle- and recall-specific. For example, Ford’s Takata inflator notice instructs owners of certain vehicles with unrepaired inflator recalls not to drive. That warning is not a rule for every Ford recall; it illustrates why the instructions attached to the specific recall matter. Some notices may require particular precautions, while others have different directions. Use the wording of the notice for your Ford rather than assuming all open recalls present the same immediate risk or require the same action.

If you receive or find a warning such as “do not drive” or “park outside,” use Ford or the dealer as your contact for next-step guidance. The important action is to follow the warning promptly, not to continue driving while trying to infer the risk from the recall title. If no such instruction appears, still arrange the repair and follow the notice; the absence of a particular urgent warning is not a reason to ignore an unrepaired recall.

| Option | How it works | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Ford recall lookup | Enter the VIN, or sign in and select a vehicle saved in your Garage. | A manufacturer lookup or a convenient way to select a saved Ford. |
| NHTSA VIN lookup | Search a particular vehicle by VIN for unrepaired recalls. | A second vehicle-specific check and a way to review NHTSA’s stated lookup limits. |
| NHTSA license-plate lookup | Search by plate where that option is available. | An alternative when you do not have the VIN at hand. |
| SaferCar app | Add a vehicle to receive an alert if a safety recall is issued. | Ongoing notifications rather than relying only on occasional manual searches. |
Ford sign-in is optional: you can enter the VIN directly. SaferCar is useful for alerts, but for a current check of a particular repair status, use a VIN-based lookup and confirm any uncertainty with Ford or a dealer.
The choice depends on what you need. Ford’s lookup provides a manufacturer route and an account-based convenience for a vehicle saved in the Garage. NHTSA’s VIN search gives you another vehicle-specific lookup and sets out the public search’s limitations. NHTSA’s plate lookup offers another entry method where available. SaferCar is for alerts if a safety recall is issued, rather than a replacement for reading the current status and instructions for a specific vehicle.
You can use more than one method: for example, search the VIN on Ford and NHTSA, then contact Ford or a dealer if anything is unclear. If you have the plate but not the VIN at hand, NHTSA’s plate lookup may help you start, where available. If you want notifications instead of relying on memory to perform occasional checks, add the vehicle to the free SaferCar app. None of these routes calls for buying a scanner or a generic product to obtain official recall status.
When to check again
NHTSA recommends checking at least twice a year. It also notes that VINs for some recently announced recalls may be added continuously as affected vehicles are identified. A clean result today may therefore be worth checking again after a new announcement or if you have a reason to suspect your Ford is affected. Adding the vehicle to SaferCar offers another way to receive an alert when a safety recall is issued.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChecking periodically is particularly useful because a result is a snapshot of what the lookup currently shows, and affected VIN lists for new recalls may be updated as identification work continues. A twice-yearly check follows NHTSA’s recommendation; a new recall announcement or a specific concern can be a reason to search again sooner. SaferCar adds a notification route, but it does not change the importance of following the details of a particular recall once an alert or lookup result appears.
Recall notices are consequential: NHTSA reported 997 vehicle safety recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles in the United States in 2025. That national total is not a prediction that any particular Ford has a recall, nor does it mean every recall has the same risk or remedy. The practical takeaway is that a vehicle-specific lookup and prompt attention to its instructions matter.

Common misunderstandings
- “No unrepaired recalls” does not mean “never recalled.” Completed recalls are not shown as unrepaired recalls, so a zero result is not a full recall history.
- A recall and a service campaign are not the same lookup result. NHTSA’s vehicle-specific recall search may not show non-safety campaigns.
- A VIN search is not a full history report. The public lookup has stated scope and timing limits, including for some older and newly announced recalls.
- Do not assume every recall has the same urgency. Read the individual notice and follow any instruction not to drive or to park outdoors.
- A recall does not expire, but the lookup has display limits. NHTSA says recalls never expire; it also lists limits on what its public lookup shows.
- A device purchase is not part of the recall check. The official check is an online Ford or NHTSA lookup, and a recall remedy is arranged with a manufacturer dealership.
Frequently asked questions
Can I check a Ford recall without the VIN?
NHTSA supports a license-plate search where available. If you can access the VIN, however, it is the most direct vehicle-specific lookup method described by Ford and NHTSA. NHTSA says the VIN can be found at the lower left of the windshield and on the registration card; it may also appear on the insurance card.
Do I need to sign in to Ford?
No. Ford’s page allows you to enter the VIN directly. Signing in lets an owner choose a vehicle already saved in the account’s Garage, but it is an optional convenience.

Does a zero result prove that my Ford has never had a recall?
No. NHTSA’s result is about unrepaired recalls currently associated with the VIN. A recall already repaired will not appear as unrepaired, and the lookup has stated coverage limits for some older, newly announced, small-manufacturer, non-safety, and international-vehicle situations.
Do Ford safety recalls expire?
NHTSA says an issued vehicle recall never expires. Keep that separate from what the public lookup displays: the lookup may omit certain older recalls, and newly announced affected VINs may be added over time.
Are Ford recall repairs free?
NHTSA says recall repairs at a manufacturer dealership are free. If a lookup shows an open recall, contact a Ford dealership to arrange the remedy and follow the recall notice’s directions.
What if the notice says not to drive or to park outside?
Follow that urgent instruction and contact Ford or a dealership promptly for guidance. Not every recall has the same urgency. Ford’s Takata inflator notice, for example, tells owners of certain vehicles with unrepaired inflator recalls not to drive; do not apply that specific warning to every Ford recall, but do heed the warning on your own vehicle’s notice.

How often should I check?
NHTSA recommends checking at least twice a year. Check again after a new recall announcement or if you have a reason to suspect your Ford may be affected, since VIN lists for some recent recalls can be updated continuously. SaferCar can send an alert when a safety recall is issued.
