The dependable way to check a used Subaru Forester is to use its exact 17-character VIN in both Subaru’s recall system and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lookup, then verify any past repair with dated service documentation or a Subaru retailer. A clean “no open recalls” result is not, by itself, proof that every earlier recall repair was completed.
What a completed-recall check actually has to prove
There are two separate questions when you inspect a used Forester:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Does this specific vehicle have an unrepaired recall now? A VIN lookup is designed to answer that question.
- Was a recall that once applied to this vehicle actually repaired? That requires a repair order, service record, or confirmation from Subaru.
NHTSA’s VIN tool reports unrepaired recalls. It does not display safety recalls that have already been repaired, so a result showing no open campaigns cannot reconstruct the Forester’s complete recall history. Subaru’s lookup has the same practical limitation: it tells you about campaigns requiring attention, not every historical repair invoice.

Get the right VIN before you search
Ask the seller for the Forester’s complete 17-character vehicle identification number before relying on a listing, a model-year search, or a verbal assurance. A single incorrect character can return the wrong vehicle or no result.
Match the seller’s VIN to the car
- Look through the lower driver-side windshield for the VIN plate.
- Open the driver’s door and compare it with the VIN on the door-jamb certification label.
- Compare those numbers with the VIN on the registration, title, insurance documents, and any repair orders.
- Enter the VIN only after every character matches. Do not accept a photograph that omits characters or obscures the final digits.
Subaru says its recall search is VIN-specific and requires the full VIN. If the seller will not provide it, you cannot perform a reliable vehicle-specific recall check; treat that as a reason to pause the transaction rather than substituting a general Forester search.
Run both official VIN lookups
Use the two official U.S. tools because they can update at different times and present campaign information differently:
- Open Subaru’s Vehicle Recalls page.
- Enter the exact 17-character VIN and save or print the result, including any campaign number, description, and status.
- Run the same VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup.
- Save the NHTSA result with the date checked. A screenshot or downloaded PDF gives you a contemporaneous record to compare with the seller’s paperwork.
- Repeat both searches shortly before signing the purchase documents. New recalls and newly identified affected VINs can be added after an earlier search.
Use the VIN option rather than relying only on a year, make, and model search. NHTSA explains that a year/make/model search returns general recall information, while a VIN search identifies unrepaired recalls for the particular vehicle.
Interpret the results without confusing an open recall with a completed repair
| What you find | What it establishes | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| An open recall appears in Subaru’s system or NHTSA’s VIN result | The Forester has a campaign that still requires the remedy, subject to the systems’ coverage limits. | Ask the seller to have the repair completed before delivery, or put a specific repair-and-payment plan in writing. The repair should be free at an authorized dealership. |
| Neither VIN lookup shows an open recall | No unrepaired recall is reported for that VIN in those databases at the time of the search. | Still request records for recalls that may have been repaired previously. “No open recalls” is not a complete service history. |
| A seller provides a generic maintenance receipt | The vehicle visited a shop, but the document does not prove a recall remedy was performed. | Request a record naming the recall or campaign, the remedy, the VIN, and the completion date. |
| The result is blank, inconsistent, or tied to another VIN | The search cannot be trusted as a vehicle-specific result. | Recheck every character against the windshield and door-jamb VIN, then ask a Subaru retailer to verify the campaign history. |
| MySubaru shows no recall repair | It may mean no participating retailer has uploaded the work, or that the upload is still pending; it is not conclusive by itself. | Use the original repair order or have a Subaru retailer confirm completion directly. |
How to prove that a past recall was repaired
For every recall that appears in the Forester’s history, look for a document that connects four details:
- Vehicle identity: the VIN, or enough identifying information to show the invoice belongs to this Forester.
- Campaign identity: the recall number, campaign code, or a description that clearly names the recall remedy.
- Work performed: wording such as “recall remedy completed,” followed by the part replaced, software update, inspection, or other specified remedy. An inspection-only visit, parts order, appointment confirmation, or mailed notice is not proof that the remedy was completed.
- Date: the date the work was carried out, not merely the date the owner was notified.
Records that are usually persuasive
A dated dealer repair order identifying the VIN and campaign is the strongest ordinary evidence. A manufacturer warranty claim or service invoice that identifies the remedy is also useful. Ask the seller for the full document, not a cropped image that removes the campaign number or vehicle information.
When the paperwork is incomplete
Contact a Subaru retailer with the VIN and ask the service department to confirm whether the specific campaign is recorded as completed. You can also contact Subaru recall support. Give the retailer the campaign number from the lookup and ask what evidence it can provide in writing.

MySubaru service history may include recall and service-campaign work, but Subaru notes that retailer repairs generally can take up to 30 days to appear and sometimes longer. The record also depends on whether the retailer participates in the reporting system. Treat MySubaru as a helpful cross-check, not the sole proof when the purchase decision depends on one repair.
What to compare when records and databases disagree
Occasional discrepancies are a reason to verify, not to guess. First, check that every document uses the vehicle’s current 17-character VIN; a typo or a record from another vehicle can explain an apparent conflict. Next, compare the campaign number and remedy description. A document may refer to a manufacturer service campaign while the public lookup lists a safety recall, or it may show that the vehicle was inspected but needed a later part replacement.
Ask the Subaru retailer to identify the campaign’s status in its internal system and to explain whether the work shown on the invoice satisfies the recall remedy. Request the explanation by email or on the service order, especially if the seller wants you to close the deal immediately. Keep both database results, the seller’s records, and the retailer’s response together. That file lets you show exactly what was known on the purchase date if a later database update adds a campaign.
What an open-recall repair costs and how timing affects the sale
NHTSA says an open recall is repaired for free at a local dealership, and Subaru directs owners to schedule the work with a Subaru retailer. “Free” applies to the recall remedy itself; it does not turn unrelated maintenance or diagnostic work into warranty work. Ask the dealer to separate any optional service from the recall line on the repair order.

Have the seller call the retailer with the VIN and campaign number, confirm that the remedy parts are available, and obtain a written appointment or completed repair order. An appointment confirmation is evidence that work is scheduled, not that it is finished. If you agree to take delivery before completion, write the campaign number, responsible party, deadline, and requirement to provide the final repair order into the purchase contract. Keep in mind that the recall repair remains the seller’s practical obligation to arrange if that is what your agreement says; do not rely on a casual promise.
What the lookup cannot establish
- It cannot prove that every historical recall was repaired, because repaired campaigns are generally removed from the open-recall result.
- It cannot guarantee that a recently announced campaign is already visible for this VIN; NHTSA says affected VIN lists can be incomplete while manufacturers identify vehicles.
- It cannot replace a physical VIN inspection. A result for a mistyped VIN is a result for a different vehicle.
- It cannot tell you whether non-recall maintenance, collision repairs, or aftermarket work was performed correctly.
- It cannot be replicated by an OBD-II scanner. Diagnostic codes and recall completion are separate records.
Use the databases to identify current risk, and use campaign-specific documentation to establish completed work. A pre-purchase mechanical inspection remains useful for condition, but it does not substitute for either step.
What to do if an open recall remains
Ask the seller to schedule the remedy with a Subaru retailer before you pay. NHTSA says an open recall is repaired free of charge at a local dealership, and Subaru directs owners to schedule open recalls with a Subaru retailer. Confirm that the dealer has the required parts and that the repair order will identify the campaign and VIN.

If the seller wants you to buy first
Do not rely on a promise to “take care of it later.” If you proceed, write the campaign number, the party responsible for scheduling, the deadline, and the remedy cost (normally zero for the recall itself) into the purchase agreement. Keep the lookup result and agreement with your records. A seller who refuses either a pre-sale repair or a precise written plan is leaving you with the risk and administrative work.
Why an OBD-II scanner is not a substitute
An OBD-II scanner can reveal certain diagnostic trouble codes, but it cannot establish whether a manufacturer recall campaign was completed. Recall status is tied to the VIN and the manufacturer’s campaign records, so use the Subaru and NHTSA tools and documentary confirmation instead.
Important limits for older Foresters and recent campaigns
Recalls older than 15 years
NHTSA says its VIN results exclude recalls more than 15 years old, except when the manufacturer offers additional coverage. Subaru’s recall lookup says campaigns issued before February 1998 are not included. An older Forester can therefore have historical campaign information that does not appear in one or both public lookups. Ask Subaru to check the VIN for any additional applicable history rather than treating a clean online result as exhaustive.
Newly announced recalls
NHTSA cautions that a recently announced recall may not yet list every affected VIN. The database can change as the manufacturer identifies vehicles and loads records. This is why the final lookup should be done close to purchase and why a seller’s earlier screenshot should not be your only check.
Geography and database scope
The Subaru and NHTSA tools cited here are U.S. resources. If the Forester was imported, registered outside the United States, or sold in another market, ask the local Subaru distributor or road-safety authority for the applicable VIN process. Do not assume a U.S. result covers a non-U.S. campaign.
A practical evidence checklist for the buyer
Before making a nonrefundable payment, confirm each item:
- The 17-character VIN on both lookup results matches the windshield, door-jamb label, and seller’s paperwork.
- You ran both Subaru’s recall page and NHTSA’s VIN lookup, rather than only a model-year search.
- You recorded the date and results of each search.
- Every listed open campaign has either been repaired or has a written, enforceable plan for completion.
- For each past campaign the seller claims was repaired, the record names the campaign and remedy and shows a completion date.
- Any ambiguity has been referred to a Subaru retailer or Subaru recall support, with the response documented.
- You repeated the online checks immediately before finalizing the purchase.
Red flags that should stop or slow the transaction
- VIN refusal: The seller will not provide the full VIN or says a plate number is sufficient.
- VIN mismatch: The number on an invoice, title, or lookup differs from the car’s windshield or door-jamb VIN.
- “Serviced” without a campaign: A generic maintenance entry is offered as proof of recall completion.
- Open appointment presented as completion: A scheduled visit, parts order, or notification letter is treated as a finished remedy.
- Pressure to skip the final search: The seller relies on an old screenshot or says the recall database is unnecessary.
- Unresolved system conflict: Subaru and NHTSA show different statuses and nobody will obtain a retailer explanation.
These issues do not automatically prove fraud, but they do mean the recall status is unverified. Delay the purchase until the VIN and repair evidence are reconciled.

Questions to put to the seller
Use specific questions that produce checkable answers:
- “Please send the complete 17-character VIN and confirm it matches the windshield and driver-door label.”
- “Which Subaru or NHTSA campaigns were open, and when was each remedy completed?”
- “Can I see the repair order showing the campaign number, work performed, VIN, and date?”
- “If a campaign is still open, will you have the dealer complete it before delivery?”
- “If the repair was done recently, can we wait for the retailer to confirm it or provide the original invoice?”
Answers that include a campaign number and a dated document are materially more useful than assurances that the vehicle has been “looked after.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy this check matters even on a well-maintained Forester
Routine maintenance records and a clean inspection do not establish recall completion. A recall remedy can involve a safety-critical component or software campaign that is tracked separately from oil changes, brake work, and other scheduled service. NHTSA reported 997 vehicle safety recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles in the United States in 2025, illustrating why a vehicle-specific check is more reliable than assuming a careful owner handled every campaign.
Final purchase sequence
- Obtain and physically verify the Forester’s full VIN.
- Run that VIN through Subaru’s recall page and NHTSA’s lookup.
- Record both results and identify every open or historical campaign mentioned in the seller’s records.
- Require free dealer completion of any open recall before delivery, or document a precise alternative arrangement.
- Verify completed campaigns with dated, campaign-specific repair records; use a Subaru retailer when documents are missing or unclear.
- Repeat both VIN searches immediately before signing and keep the results with the bill of sale.
This process answers the two questions that matter: whether the Forester currently has an unrepaired recall and whether there is credible evidence that earlier recall remedies were actually completed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Subaru Forester recall ever expire?
No. NHTSA states, “Once a vehicle has been recalled, that recall never expires.” An eligible open remedy can still be requested, even after the Forester changes owners or becomes older.
Does “no open recalls” prove all recalls were completed?
No. Subaru and NHTSA VIN tools primarily show unrepaired campaigns. A repaired recall may no longer appear, so request a dated repair order or ask a Subaru retailer to confirm the completed campaign.
What information should a recall repair record contain?
Look for the Forester’s VIN, the recall or campaign number, a description of the remedy or work performed, and the date the repair was completed. A notification letter, parts order, inspection-only visit, or appointment is not completion proof.

Can I use an OBD-II scanner to check recall completion?
No. A scanner can read certain diagnostic trouble codes, but recall completion is recorded against the VIN in manufacturer and recall databases. Use Subaru’s and NHTSA’s lookups plus documentary confirmation.
How often should I run the VIN lookup before buying?
Run both official searches when you begin evaluating the car and repeat them shortly before signing. NHTSA says newly announced recalls may not yet include every affected VIN, and records can change as vehicles are identified.
What if MySubaru does not show a recall repair that the seller says was done?
MySubaru may be delayed, and inclusion depends on retailer participation. Subaru notes that retailer repairs can take up to 30 days or longer to appear. Ask for the original repair order or have a Subaru retailer verify the campaign directly.
Are older Forester recalls always visible in NHTSA’s lookup?
Not necessarily. NHTSA excludes recalls more than 15 years old from its VIN results except where the manufacturer provides additional coverage. Subaru says campaigns issued before February 1998 are not included in its recall lookup. Ask Subaru to check older history.
Who pays for an open recall repair?
NHTSA says an open recall remedy is repaired free at a local dealership, and Subaru directs owners to schedule with a Subaru retailer. Unrelated maintenance or optional repairs are separate, so ask the dealer to identify the recall work clearly on the repair order.
The Bottom Line
Before buying a used Forester, match the complete VIN on the car and paperwork, run it through Subaru and NHTSA, and save dated results. Treat “no open recalls” as a current-status finding, not a complete repair history. Require campaign-specific records or Subaru confirmation for past work, and have any open remedy completed free by a dealer—or document a precise written plan before money changes hands.
