To aim your headlights without dazzling other drivers, follow the adjustment procedure for your exact vehicle and headlamp type. A level-ground wall check can reveal an obviously high, low, or sideways beam, but there is no universal cutoff height or adjustment setting that works for every car. Prepare the vehicle as its manual specifies, check the low beams, and use a qualified shop if you cannot verify the correct target or the lamps are damaged or loose.
Why correct headlight aim matters
A headlight can be bright and still be unsafe if it points in the wrong direction. A beam aimed too high can shine into the eyes of oncoming drivers or people ahead of you. One aimed too low may light too little of the road. A beam pointed sideways can leave a dark area where you need illumination while sending light where it does not help you.

Glare is not always caused by the adjustment screws. NHTSA notes that headlamp replacement and vehicle loading can alter aim and are often associated with glare complaints. Improper installation, misaiming, or incorrect use of auxiliary fog or driving lamps can also contribute. If the beam seems wrong after you adjust the main lamps, consider these other causes rather than continuing to turn adjusters.
Before you start: find the vehicle-specific target
Check the owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s service procedure before moving an adjuster. They should identify which lamps are adjustable, the required vehicle preparation, the distance and reference points for a wall check, and the intended beam target. The details vary with the vehicle, year, headlamp design, and adjustment hardware. Some official inspection methods also distinguish between lamp types and use optical equipment.

Do not assume that a commonly repeated instruction—such as aiming every cutoff a fixed number of inches below a headlight center—is right for your car. A drop only has meaning when the distance, reference point, lamp type, and vehicle procedure are known. If the manual does not provide a DIY adjustment method, or you cannot tell which adjuster controls which direction, do not guess.
Choose a method that fits the job

A wall check is a useful screening step, not a substitute for the vehicle’s specification. If buying or borrowing an aiming device, verify that it supports your headlamp type and follow the device maker’s setup instructions. Official procedures describe mechanical aiming devices and headlight aim test machines, but that does not establish that any particular consumer tool fits every vehicle.
Prepare the vehicle and aiming area
Preparation affects where the beam falls. Use the maker’s specified loading condition, tire pressure, and other setup requirements. For example, Toyota Motor North America’s 2019 technical instructions hosted by NHTSA call for level ground, correct tire pressure, a driver-equivalent load of 68 kg (150 lb) in the driver’s seat, and consideration of fuel or luggage load as specified in that procedure. Those are Toyota procedure details, not a universal load rule.

- Choose genuinely level ground. A sloped driveway, uneven pavement, or a change in elevation between the car and wall can make a correct beam appear misaligned.
- Use a suitable wall or screen. It should be vertical, large enough to show both low-beam patterns, and in a location dark enough to see the cutoff or beam pattern. Toyota’s cited instructions call for a dark enough location to see the cutoff.
- Square the car to the wall. The vehicle should face the surface straight on, not at an angle. Toyota’s procedure specifies a 90-degree relationship between the vehicle and wall.
- Set tires and load as directed. Check tire pressure and use the fuel, luggage, passenger, or driver’s-seat load specified by your manual. Do not substitute a generic loading assumption for the maker’s procedure.
- Clear the area and secure the vehicle. Keep people out of the beam path. Set the parking brake, and avoid running the engine in an enclosed space if the procedure requires it to be on.
- Gather only what the procedure requires. A tape measure, masking tape, and a way to mark measurements can help with a wall method. Utah Highway Patrol’s chart uses masking tape to mark beam centers and reference lines; a specialized tool is not necessary just to make those marks.
How to check your low beams against a wall
Use the following sequence only as a setup framework. The owner’s manual or service instructions control the actual distance, marks, target, and adjustment method for your vehicle. Keep low beams on for the check unless the vehicle-specific procedure directs otherwise.
- Confirm the specified preparation. Set tire pressure and vehicle load as directed. Make sure the lamps and their mounts are installed and secure. If a lamp was recently replaced, confirm that the replacement is the correct part and installed in the correct orientation before trying to aim it.
- Park squarely on level ground. Position the vehicle perpendicular to the wall or screen at the distance specified by the vehicle procedure. Keep the steering straight and the vehicle settled in its normal stance.
- Mark the reference points. Follow the procedure for identifying each low-beam center or another required reference. If it calls for wall marks, use masking tape so the reference lines can be seen without permanently marking the surface. Do not invent a reference line based on a different vehicle’s instructions.
- Switch on the low beams and observe the pattern. Note the cutoff or hot spot for each lamp, as applicable to its design. Compare each beam with the corresponding reference and the specified target. If one side differs substantially from the other, record which lamp and direction appear out of position before touching an adjuster.
- Adjust only as the vehicle procedure specifies. Locate the correct vertical or horizontal adjuster using the manual or service instructions. Make small, controlled changes and recheck the pattern; do not turn an unidentified screw or force a mechanism that binds. Some lamps or vehicles may require an aiming machine or service procedure rather than a wall adjustment.
- Recheck both lamps and the final setup. Once an adjustment is made, repeat the check at the specified distance and with the vehicle still in the required condition. Confirm that the beam patterns meet the vehicle-specific targets rather than relying on visual symmetry alone.
What the 25-foot wall check does—and does not—tell you
Utah Highway Patrol’s wall-chart method is one example, not a nationwide aim specification. It describes marking the low-beam centers with the vehicle close to the wall, backing the vehicle to 25 feet (7.63 meters), and checking where the beam’s hot spot falls relative to the marks. Its chart uses four-inch horizontal and vertical tolerances in its own pass/reject criteria. The agency says those criteria do not apply when a mechanical headlight aiming device is used.
A NHTSA-hosted Toyota technical document also illustrates a 7.62 m (25 ft.) wall setup and includes a 3 m alternative. That distance and alternative belong to that document’s vehicle-specific procedure. Another NHTSA-hosted owner-manual excerpt likewise describes a level surface, proper tire pressure, normal loading, and a 25-foot wall check for its vehicle. These examples show why 25 feet is familiar, but they do not make it the correct distance or target for every car.

Use the applicable chart or manual as a complete method: distance, vehicle preparation, reference mark, beam type, and tolerance belong together. Taking one number from a state chart and applying it to a different vehicle or aiming device can produce a misleading result.
How to adjust without making the problem worse
Identify the adjuster before turning it
Adjustment hardware is not standardized across all vehicles. Consult the manual or service procedure to identify the correct control and its direction of movement. If a control is inaccessible, unlabeled, stripped, or difficult to turn, stop rather than applying force. A broken adjuster or mount can make further adjustment ineffective or leave the lamp insecure.
Change one thing at a time
Keep track of which lamp and adjuster you changed, then recheck the pattern. Avoid making simultaneous, large changes to both lamps: that makes it harder to determine which change helped. Do not use the other headlamp as the sole target for the first one; both could be mis-aimed in the same direction.

Do not compensate for a setup error with the adjusters
If the car is at an angle, the floor slopes, the load is wrong, or tire pressure is off, the observed pattern may not represent the normal driving position. Correct the setup first. An adjustment made to offset a temporary or incorrect setup can leave the lamps aimed badly when the car is prepared properly.

Check aim after headlamp replacement or other work that could disturb the lamp, and when a change in vehicle load alters the beam position. NHTSA specifically identifies replacement and loading as factors that can alter aim. If you regularly carry a load that changes the vehicle’s stance, consult the manual for any load-related adjustment or leveling instructions rather than making an arbitrary permanent correction.

If the beam changes after driving, or the lamp visibly shifts, treat it as a mounting or installation problem and have it checked.

Glare persists? Check more than headlight aim
If the low beams appear correctly aimed but other drivers still report glare—or visibility remains poor—consider causes beyond the adjusters. Check whether replacement lamps are the correct type and properly installed, whether the vehicle is carrying an unusual load, and whether auxiliary fog or driving lamps are installed and used correctly. These factors can affect glare or illumination even when the main-beam adjustment seems reasonable.
- Uneven or wandering pattern: Look for a loose or damaged headlamp mount, incorrect seating, or a lamp that shifts. Arrange inspection if the lamp will not stay in position.
- One beam differs sharply from the other: Verify both lamps are the intended parts and correctly installed, then follow the maker’s aiming method. Do not assume the difference is fixed by turning one screw.
- Cannot see a clear cutoff or target: Some lamp designs and procedures require an optical or mechanical aiming device. Use an appropriate service rather than guessing at a wall target.
- Adjuster does not respond or binds: Stop and have the mechanism, housing, and mounts inspected. Forcing it risks damage and may not change the aim.
- Wall result conflicts with the manual: Follow the vehicle-specific instructions and, where needed, have the result checked using the prescribed equipment.
When a professional aiming check is the safer choice
Have a qualified shop check the lamps if you cannot identify the correct adjusters, the housing or mounting is damaged or loose, a replacement lamp will not seat properly, or you cannot establish the specified target. A shop with appropriate aiming equipment can perform a more controlled check when the vehicle procedure calls for it. Ask that the technician follow the procedure for your exact vehicle and lamp type, and address any damaged or incorrectly installed components rather than adjusting around them.
Inspection rules are local. For instance, Virginia’s administrative inspection rule distinguishes certain lamp classes and describes optical aiming equipment in specified circumstances. That is an example of a state method, not a rule that applies across the United States. Follow the requirements where the vehicle is registered and the manufacturer’s procedure for adjustment.
