There is no single expiration date for an electric vehicle’s traction battery. Capacity usually declines gradually, while outright failure requiring a replacement is a separate and much less common event. In Geotab’s January 2026 analysis of more than 22,700 vehicles across 21 makes and models, average annual capacity degradation was 2.3%. That is a useful benchmark—not a promise for any particular car.
How long should an EV battery last?
Most EV batteries do not suddenly stop working when they reach a particular age. They gradually store less energy, which can reduce the vehicle’s available range. A pack can remain usable even after its capacity has fallen, so “battery life” can mean two different things:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Capacity fade: the battery holds less energy than it did when new. This is a normal aging process.
- Failure requiring replacement: the battery or a component fails badly enough to need repair or replacement. This is not the same as ordinary capacity loss.
Geotab’s January 2026 analysis found average annual degradation of 2.3% across more than 22,700 vehicles spanning 21 makes and models. Its detailed cohort analysis projects that a battery degrading at that average rate would retain about 81.6% of its original capacity after eight years. This is a projection from a cohort average, not a measured outcome guaranteed for each vehicle. Geotab’s 2026 analysis and detailed battery-health report both emphasize that rates vary among vehicles.

Range also depends on temperature, speed, driving conditions, tires and the vehicle’s estimates. A battery’s usable capacity is only one part of what determines how far a car can travel. Modern packs commonly remain useful beyond a typical vehicle service life, but that broad pattern cannot predict the condition of an individual car.

Geotab describes degradation as “a natural process that reduces the amount of energy a battery can store over time.” The practical consequence is usually a gradual reduction in the energy available for driving, not a sudden point at which every battery becomes unusable. How much capacity is enough depends on the vehicle, the driver’s range needs and the battery’s actual condition.
Battery degradation is not the same as battery failure
Failure-related replacement data helps answer how often packs need replacement, but it does not show how much capacity the average battery loses. The U.S. Department of Energy’s April 2024 fact sheet summarizes a Recurrent study of about 15,000 plug-in vehicles from model years 2011–2023: 1.5% had a failure-related battery replacement, excluding recalls. For model years 2016–2023, the reported rate was well under 1%.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s current consumer page gives a separate Recurrent summary: 2.5% average failure-related replacement outside major recalls across the studied vehicles, and under 0.5% for model year 2016 onward. These government summaries report different figures and scopes; they should not be averaged or treated as interchangeable. Neither figure measures normal capacity fade. DOE’s April 2024 fact sheet and the EPA’s EV myths page preserve those distinct summaries.

What affects an EV battery’s lifespan?
Battery aging reflects a mix of vehicle design, climate and use. Geotab’s large fleet analysis identifies charging power as its strongest operational influence, but no single habit determines how long every battery will last. Battery chemistry, battery management and thermal management vary by model, so even drivers with similar routines may see different results.
Frequent high-power DC fast charging
In Geotab’s 2026 cohort comparison, vehicles relying heavily on DC fast charging above 100 kW showed degradation of up to 3.0% per year, compared with around 1.5% per year among vehicles primarily using AC or lower-power charging. These are cohort results, not universal rates or a prediction for a specific driver.

The practical point is not to avoid DC fast charging altogether. It is useful when time or distance makes it necessary. The observed difference concerns heavy reliance on high-power charging, so drivers can balance charging speed against their needs rather than treating every fast-charge session as harmful. The comparison is between groups with different charging patterns; it does not establish that one fast-charge session will cause a measurable loss or that every car will respond identically.

Geotab’s update characterizes battery health as remaining strong even as vehicles are charged faster and used more intensively. That context matters: the data identifies an association worth considering for frequent, high-power use, not a reason to compromise necessary travel or fleet operations in every case.
Heat and battery thermal management
Geotab found about 0.4% faster annual degradation in hotter regions than in mild climates. That is a smaller difference in its analysis than the charging-power comparison, and it does not mean every hot-weather EV will degrade at the same rate. Battery chemistry, pack design and thermal-management systems differ by model.
Temperature is one of several conditions used in battery-life modeling. NREL’s battery-lifespan material also identifies operating windows, charge and discharge rates, storage environment and cycling patterns as relevant factors. The effect a driver experiences depends partly on how the car manages battery temperature and limits. Climate is therefore useful context when comparing vehicles, but it is not a stand-alone diagnosis of battery health.
Time spent near full or empty
Geotab’s data does not justify a universal 20%–80% charging rule for every daily routine. Its analysis found materially faster degradation when a vehicle spent prolonged, habitual periods near full or near empty. Using a wider range during ordinary driving did not show a meaningful increase unless the car sat at an extreme for much of its time.

How much and how intensively the vehicle is used
Higher-use vehicles showed somewhat faster degradation in Geotab’s updated analysis, but the effect was modest relative to operational productivity. High mileage alone is therefore not a reliable measure of battery health. A heavily driven car may still have a healthier battery than a lower-mileage car with different charging habits, climate exposure or battery design.
For an individual vehicle, usage should be considered alongside state of health, model and year, climate, charging-power mix and time spent near charge extremes. Odometer reading remains useful background, but it cannot substitute for battery-health information.
Vehicle and battery design
Geotab reports meaningful differences among vehicle models and classes. Chemistry, battery management and thermal management can all contribute, so an observed rate for one make or model should not be assumed to apply to another. When assessing a particular EV, compare vehicles by model and model year, and consider known battery design alongside how each car was used.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen comparing published results, check what is actually being measured. A capacity-degradation average is not a failure-replacement rate. Also consider cohort size, model years, geography, recall exclusions and publication date. Geotab’s averages describe its analyzed groups; individual vehicles can be above or below the group result.
Does charging to 100% damage the battery?
The evidence does not support a blanket claim that charging to 100% once—or using the full charge range when needed—damages every EV battery. Geotab’s findings focus on prolonged, habitual time near the extremes, particularly when a vehicle remains near full or near empty for much of its time. The duration and pattern matter more than a single charge event.
Use the charge limit recommended in the owner’s manual for routine parking and charging. If the car will sit for an extended period, consult its specific guidance rather than assuming all batteries should be stored at the same state of charge. Charging higher before a long trip may serve a different purpose from leaving a vehicle full for long periods.

Likewise, a driver does not need to force every ordinary trip into a narrow charge window based on a universal percentage rule. The relevant distinction in the cited data is habitual, prolonged storage near full or empty, not ordinary use across a wider range. Settings and recommendations can differ between vehicles, so the manual is the best source for a model-specific limit.
How can you check the battery health of a used EV?
Battery state of health (SOH) describes current usable capacity relative to when the battery was new. It is more informative than odometer mileage alone, but a dashboard range estimate is not a definitive SOH reading: temperature, recent driving and the vehicle’s range-estimation algorithm can all change the number shown.
Geotab’s fleet method estimates capacity using the energy entering a battery during charging and the energy delivered during driving, assessed against changes in state of charge. That is a fleet-analysis method, not a universal consumer test available in every vehicle. The reviewed sources do not establish one cross-model test that buyers can use on all used EVs.
- Look for the vehicle’s own battery-health report. Check the owner-facing display, vehicle app or documentation for a model-specific capacity or SOH reading, if offered.
- Ask for a dealer or qualified service assessment. Request the available battery-health information for that model rather than relying on one displayed range estimate.
- Review the warranty booklet and service records. Confirm the battery warranty terms that apply to the specific vehicle, including any capacity threshold and conditions.
- Consider use history alongside mileage. Where available, ask about climate, charging patterns and whether the vehicle frequently relied on high-power DC fast charging. These details help provide context but cannot substitute for a health assessment.
For a useful comparison, prioritize reported SOH and model-specific evidence, then consider odometer reading, climate and charging history. The same mileage can correspond to different battery conditions in different vehicles. If two used EVs are being compared, look for the same kinds of evidence for both rather than treating a single range estimate or a general fleet average as a definitive score.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the EV battery warranty cover?
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center says many manufacturers offer an eight-year/100,000-mile battery warranty. That is a general description, not a universal term or guarantee of a particular capacity threshold. Coverage varies by make, model and warranty document, so check the original warranty booklet for the vehicle being considered.
Check which vehicle and battery are covered, the warranty period and mileage limit, and any stated capacity threshold or conditions. Do not assume that the general 8-year/100,000-mile description applies to every manufacturer or that it promises a specific remaining range. For a used vehicle, confirm the terms that apply to that exact model and its documentation.

DOE says manufacturers typically do not publish replacement-pack pricing, and an out-of-warranty replacement is expected to be a significant expense. There is no evidence here to support a single price that applies across EVs. Because packs are vehicle-specific and pricing is not generally published, a generic replacement estimate can mislead; ask the manufacturer or a qualified service provider about the particular vehicle if replacement becomes a real consideration. For warranty, maintenance and replacement context, see the DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center’s electric-vehicle maintenance guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many years does an EV battery last?
There is no single expiration age. Geotab’s January 2026 analysis found an average annual degradation rate of 2.3% across more than 22,700 vehicles and projected about 81.6% capacity remaining after eight years at that average rate. That is a cohort projection, not a guarantee for an individual vehicle; model, design and use matter.
Does frequent DC fast charging wear out an EV battery faster?
Geotab found faster degradation among vehicles relying heavily on DC fast charging above 100 kW—up to 3.0% annually versus around 1.5% for vehicles primarily using AC or lower-power charging. These are cohort comparisons, not a prediction for every car. The findings do not mean drivers must never fast-charge; they point to heavy reliance as a factor to weigh against operational needs.
Do I need to keep my EV between 20% and 80% charge?
The available evidence does not support a strict 20%–80% rule for every EV and routine. Geotab found materially faster degradation when vehicles spent prolonged, habitual periods near full or near empty; ordinary use over a wider range did not show a meaningful increase unless the car sat at an extreme for much of its time. Follow the specific owner’s manual.
Can I tell battery health from the range shown on the dashboard?
Not reliably from one reading. Displayed range can fluctuate with temperature, recent driving and the vehicle’s estimate. Look for the model’s own battery-health report or ask a dealer or qualified service provider what assessment is available; the reviewed sources do not establish one universal consumer test across EV models.
How much does it cost to replace an EV battery?
The sources reviewed do not establish a universal replacement price. DOE says manufacturers typically do not publish replacement-pack pricing and that an out-of-warranty replacement is expected to be a significant expense. Any estimate should be specific to the vehicle and its warranty status.
Are EV battery replacements common?
Government summaries of Recurrent data report low failure-related replacement rates, but provide different figures. DOE’s 2024 fact sheet gives 1.5% for about 15,000 plug-in vehicles from model years 2011–2023, excluding recalls, and well under 1% for 2016–2023. EPA reports 2.5% overall outside major recalls and under 0.5% for model year 2016 onward. These figures concern failure-related replacement, not normal capacity loss, and should not be combined.
The Bottom Line
EV batteries generally lose capacity gradually; that does not mean the pack has failed or needs replacement. Geotab’s 2.3% average annual degradation and eight-year projection are useful context, not an individual-car guarantee. Heavy reliance on high-power DC fast charging and prolonged time near full or empty are relevant patterns, while heat, vehicle design and use also matter. For a specific car, check its state-of-health information, owner’s manual and warranty rather than relying on mileage or a single dashboard range estimate.
