Indicator colors are not standardized across electric scooters. Use the manual or support page for the exact scooter and charger rather than assuming that a red, green, or unlit indicator means the same thing on every model.

For example, Xiaomi says the adapter light on its Electric Scooter 4 Lite (2nd Gen) is red while charging and green when the scooter is not charging (Xiaomi FAQ). NIU describes a different check for its own charger when disconnected, and says a red light or no light may indicate a damaged charger (NIU support guidance). These examples are model-specific; they are not universal diagnostic codes.
Use the light as one clue, not as a stand-alone verdict about the battery. First check what the exact manual says the indicator means in the situation you are observing—for example, whether the charger is connected to the scooter or disconnected. If the light behavior does not match the model’s instructions, follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps or ask its support team. A color reported for another scooter does not prove that your charger or battery is working, and a dark indicator does not have one universal meaning.
Check for a temperature-related charging block
A scooter may refuse to charge because its battery is outside the permitted charging-temperature range. Limits differ by model, so check the specification for your scooter rather than applying another model’s thresholds. A charging block in cold or hot conditions may be a protective response rather than evidence that the battery has failed.

These published figures apply only to the named models; they are not a general e-scooter charging range. The difference between the examples matters: a temperature that is inside one model’s range may fall outside another’s. If the scooter is cold, let it reach the temperature specified by its manufacturer before trying again. If it is hot after use, allow it to cool according to its own instructions and keep it away from heat while charging. For the 4 Lite (2nd Gen), Xiaomi’s FAQ specifically says to wait until the temperature reaches 7°C for charging to resume after the below-2°C block, and to cool a hot scooter or battery for at least 30 minutes before retrying. Test only with a charger approved for the scooter

Charge only while you are present
The CPSC’s public-safety guidance says: “Always be present when charging micromobility products, never while sleeping, and only use the supplied charger.” Charge in line with the scooter’s manual, remain nearby, and stop if you notice unusual heat, odor, smoke, or visible damage. Do not leave a scooter charging while you sleep.
This advice is especially important while troubleshooting: do not leave a scooter plugged in for an extended period to see whether it eventually responds, and do not attempt repeated tests while you are away. Use the approved charger and monitor the charging process. If something seems wrong, disconnect only as the product instructions allow and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for direction.

There is no single cross-brand light code, charging-temperature limit, or universal charger specification that can identify every fault.
