Change spark plugs at the interval specified for your exact vehicle, engine and market—not according to one universal mileage rule. Plug design and driving conditions matter, but general estimates cannot replace the owner’s manual or maintenance booklet.
Start with your vehicle’s maintenance schedule
Check the owner’s manual or maintenance booklet for the specified spark-plug replacement interval. Schedules can vary by vehicle, engine, market and plug type. Some are based on distance, time, or whichever comes first, so follow the schedule’s own terms.
For example, a Mazda CX-5 manual lists replacement every 120,000 km (75,000 miles) for the application it covers and says service intervals use whichever comes first: time or distance. That is an example for the manual’s listed application, not a schedule to apply to other CX-5 model years or vehicles.
Nissan’s Japanese-language customer FAQ says general spark plugs are not periodic replacement parts under its guidance and are inspected during scheduled or vehicle inspections. For passenger-car platinum and iridium plugs, it gives 100,000 km as a scheduled-replacement example, while directing owners to their maintenance booklet for the applicable interval. This guidance is specific to its market and vehicle context.

How plug type changes the rough estimate
DENSO provides general guidance that distinguishes conventional plugs from certain long-life types. These are rough estimates, not universal service intervals or substitutes for the vehicle maker’s schedule.
| Plug guidance | Published interval | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| DENSO conventional passenger-car plugs | 15,000–20,000 km | Rough economic-life guidance; operating and ignition conditions can shorten life. DENSO guidance |
| DENSO specified platinum, Iridium Tough and Iridium Plus plugs | Up to 100,000 km | Rough guidance for the specified types, not a fitment recommendation or vehicle-specific schedule. DENSO guidance |
| Mazda CX-5 manual example | 120,000 km (75,000 miles) | Only the manual’s listed application; whichever comes first, time or distance. Mazda manual |
| Nissan FAQ example for passenger-car platinum/iridium plugs | 100,000 km | Japanese-market FAQ guidance; check the vehicle’s maintenance booklet. Nissan FAQ |
The figures differ because they describe different plug and vehicle contexts. Do not use the longest figure simply because your plugs are described as platinum or iridium; confirm the approved plug and interval for your vehicle.

Driving conditions can affect service life
DENSO cautions that its rough economic-life estimates may be shortened by operating conditions or ignition-system characteristics. It names high-speed or high-load driving, hill climbing and extended idling among the factors that can reduce service life. Follow any severe-use schedule or inspection guidance in your vehicle’s manual.
Symptoms can be a reason to check, not a diagnosis
DENSO explains that a worn center electrode can become rounded, interfering with sparking and potentially preventing stable ignition of the fuel mixture. It lists poor fuel mileage, difficult starting, reduced power and unstable idling as possible problems.

Those symptoms do not prove the spark plugs are the cause. If they appear, have the vehicle diagnosed rather than replacing plugs on symptoms alone; other faults can produce similar problems.

Before buying replacement spark plugs for your vehicle, check spark plug fitment against the exact year, make, model, engine and market, then confirm the plug specification in the vehicle’s service information. A matching brand or a similar-looking plug alone does not establish compatibility.

For a DIY replacement, use the vehicle manufacturer’s repair instructions for the plug and engine. DENSO warns that adjusting the gap on thin-electrode platinum or iridium plugs can damage the center electrode. Do not adjust one unless the applicable service information explicitly directs it. The correct installation procedure and tools depend on the vehicle; a generic procedure or socket size cannot be assumed.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Compatible Models: Compatible with Honda, Mazda, and Lexus vehicles. Installation dimensions perfectly match original spark plugs, requiring no modifications to the engine ignition system. Ideal for engine ignition system upgrades or replacing worn spark plugs.
- Durable Materials: The spark plug is crafted from highly durable materials with strong resistance to high temperatures and oxidation, withstanding the extreme heat and pressure of engine operation while reducing wear rates. The housing offers excellent insulation and impact resistance.
- Key Features: Vehicle spark plugs deliver powerful, stable energy during engine ignition, ensuring complete combustion within cylinders. This prevents cold start difficulties and idle vibration caused by weak ignition, reducing the likelihood of starting failures.
- Enhanced Power: Spark plugs are engineered to optimize performance by addressing common engine power loss issues. They minimize power reduction caused by incomplete combustion, significantly improving engine response lag during scenarios demanding high power output—such as rapid acceleration or high-speed driving.
- Reduced Consumption: By precisely controlling ignition efficiency, spark plugs indirectly mitigate increased vehicle consumption. They also minimize deposits from incomplete combustion, preventing abnormal consumption caused by clogged fuel lines and reducing overall maintenance frequency.
