Slate lists its Blank Slate at $26,400 including destination, while Cars.com lists the Ford Maverick XL at $28,990 including destination. A used pickup could cost less, but without a current listing and comparable local fees, it would be misleading to name one as a verified bargain.
Can you buy a Slate Truck right now?
No. Slate says preorders are open, but its purchase process is expected to begin as the delivery window approaches in late 2026, with first deliveries also expected in late 2026. A preorder is not a purchase with immediate delivery. Slate describes a $300 deposit; its purchase page says the deposit is non-refundable and applied to the final price. Check Slate’s FAQ and purchase process for current timing and terms, which may change.
How do the listed new-truck starting prices compare?
The most useful comparison in the cited sources is between Slate’s destination-inclusive starting figure and the Ford Maverick XL’s destination-inclusive starting figure. Neither figure is a local out-the-door quote.

What about the Ford Fathom?
It is not a verified cheaper option in the cited reporting. Tom’s Guide reported an announced $28,350 starting price on August 6, 2026, and described the launch as forthcoming. That announced figure is above Slate’s $26,400 destination-inclusive starting figure, and an announced price does not establish that buyers can order, purchase or take delivery now. Confirm retail status and the price’s included charges before treating it as an available alternative. Tom’s Guide also quoted Ford Model e General Manager Kay Hart describing the Fathom as intended to be “high-tech, adaptable, and delivering value by taking costs out where customers don’t care.” That is Ford’s product philosophy, not independent proof that the Fathom is a better or cheaper buy. Could a used pickup cost less?
Yes, but there is no single used-truck price that answers the question for every buyer. The evidence here does not establish a current listing that is both cheaper and available to a particular reader, so it would be premature to recommend a specific used model as a confirmed alternative.

Compare a real listing with Slate’s expected purchase cost using the same location and fee basis. Include taxes, title, registration, dealer or documentation fees, and required repairs—not just the advertised price. For a used truck, also account for mileage, condition, title history, warranty coverage and service access. Local inventory and the equipment included in each vehicle can alter which option is actually less expensive.

A lower starting price does not automatically mean a lower-cost or suitable truck. Slate describes its vehicle as a two-door electric pickup with a projected range of 205 miles. Slate says that figure approximates the EPA test cycle but is not an official EPA estimate; the truck is preproduction and specifications may change. Its June 24, 2026 release gives projected figures of 2,000 pounds maximum towing and 1,550 pounds payload, also subject to change.
