Elon Musk’s reputation appears to put some prospective Tesla buyers off, but the available evidence does not show that his behavior alone is “killing” the company’s sales. In an Australian Automotive Dealer Association survey, 38% of 2,000 respondents said their opinion of Musk made them less likely to consider buying or leasing a Tesla. That is a meaningful negative signal about purchase consideration—not a count of lost transactions or proof of what caused Tesla’s sales to change.
Tesla reported 486,532 vehicle deliveries worldwide in Q3 2026, up from 384,122 in Q3 2025. The figures show a recent rebound, not whether Musk’s image has or has not affected demand. To judge the claim fairly, it helps to separate deliveries, revenue, regional sales estimates and what people say they might buy.
Does Elon Musk affect Tesla sales?
There is evidence that Musk’s reputation is a negative factor in stated Tesla purchase consideration for some consumers. The strongest direct measure in the available evidence is the Australian Automotive Dealer Association’s November 2025 survey of 2,000 Australians. Asked whether their opinion of Musk affected their willingness to buy or lease a Tesla in future, respondents gave these answers:
| Reported effect on Tesla consideration | Share of respondents |
|---|---|
| Less likely because of their opinion of Musk | 38% |
| More likely | 11% |
| No impact | 50% |
The survey’s net negative effect was 27 percentage points: 38% less likely minus 11% more likely. The report put the comparable net negative at 21 points in November 2024. These are self-reported attitudes from Australia, not a measure of completed purchases, and they cannot establish how many respondents were actually shopping for a car.

That distinction matters. A person can say a CEO’s public image makes them less interested in a brand and still buy its vehicle; another may choose a competitor for price, availability, range, financing or other reasons. The survey supports the narrower conclusion that Musk’s reputation weighs against Tesla consideration for a notable share of respondents—not that it independently caused a particular number of lost sales.
What do Tesla’s latest delivery figures show?
Tesla reported 486,532 vehicle deliveries globally in Q3 2026, including 478,237 vehicles in a combined Model 3/Y line and 8,295 other models. The company does not break out separate Model 3 and Model Y totals in that release.

| Measure | Reported figure | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla global deliveries, Q3 2026 | 486,532; Tesla, October 2, 2026 | Quarterly vehicles delivered worldwide, as reported by Tesla |
| Tesla global deliveries, Q3 2025 | 384,122; Tesla | Comparison figure cited in Tesla’s Q3 2026 release |
| Model 3/Y deliveries, Q3 2026 | 478,237; Tesla | Combined total; separate model counts were not stated |
| Other model deliveries, Q3 2026 | 8,295; Tesla | All other models in the release’s grouped figure |
The year-over-year increase rules out describing Tesla’s global deliveries as still collapsing in that quarter. It does not show that reputation played no role: deliveries can rise while a brand faces backlash, and one quarter cannot isolate the cause of a change.
Why “sales” can mean different things
Headlines often use “sales” as if every metric measured the same thing. It does not. Tesla reports deliveries, while revenue, regional registrations and survey responses describe different parts of the business and different populations.

- Deliveries count vehicles Tesla says it handed over in a period. They are a useful unit-volume measure, but not a direct measure of profit or of why a customer chose the car.
- Revenue is money earned, influenced by unit volume as well as selling prices, product mix and other factors. A revenue decline does not necessarily mean deliveries fell by the same proportion.
- Registrations or regional sales estimates can show movement in a particular market, but should not be substituted for Tesla’s global delivery total.
- Purchase consideration records what surveyed people say they might do, not a completed transaction.
- Owner satisfaction describes current customers’ experience; it is not a Tesla-specific measure of prospective demand.
Tesla cautions in its Q3 2026 release that deliveries and energy-storage deployments are only two measures of financial performance and should not by themselves be treated as an indicator of quarterly financial results. In its Q4 2024 release, the company also pointed to average selling price, cost of sales, foreign exchange and other factors affecting results.
What else could be moving Tesla demand?
Prices, financing and product mix
Tesla’s 2024 Form 10-K attributed an $6.03 billion, or 8%, decline in automotive sales revenue versus 2023 primarily to lower average selling prices after price reductions and attractive financing, changes in product mix, and approximately 22,000 fewer combined Model 3/Y cash deliveries. That is Tesla’s explanation for a revenue decline; it is not evidence that Musk’s image caused the change.

Incentives, fuel costs and regional conditions
The Associated Press’s July 2, 2026 account of Tesla’s Q2 rebound identified several possible influences: less expensive Model 3 and Model Y versions introduced the prior year, lower financing and leasing costs in Europe, increased European EV buying amid higher fuel prices, Musk-related consumer backlash, and the expiration of the U.S. EV tax credit. These factors can pull in different directions and vary by market.
AP reported that Tesla delivered 480,126 vehicles globally in Q2 2026, up 25% from 384,122 in Q2 2025. It also cited a Cox Automotive estimate that U.S. Tesla sales were still down 20% year over year in Q2 2026. The global delivery increase and the U.S. estimate are not contradictory: one is a company-reported global total, the other a regional estimate.

Broader interest in electric vehicles
JD Power reported in February 2026 that 96% of new battery-electric-vehicle owners would consider purchasing or leasing another BEV. That finding concerns current EV owners’ openness to buying another electric vehicle, not Tesla specifically, and cannot be used to infer Tesla’s share of future purchases. JD Power executive director Brent Gruber said: “EV market share has declined sharply following the discontinuation of the federal tax credit program in September 2025, but that dip belies steadily growing customer satisfaction among owners of new EVs.” He also said improvements in battery technology, charging infrastructure and vehicle performance had lifted owner satisfaction. Those observations give context on the broader EV market, not a measurement of Musk’s effect on Tesla.

Showing that Musk’s reputation affects consideration is not the same as proving it caused a sales decline. A causal answer would need to distinguish his influence from prices, financing, model availability, incentives, competition and wider EV demand, while measuring completed purchases over a defined time and place.
NBER Working Paper 34413, “The Musk Partisan Effect on Tesla Sales,” studies U.S. monthly county-level new-vehicle registrations in relation to counties’ Democratic and Republican voting shares. Its described research design addresses sales patterns, but the evidence cited here does not establish a numerical causal estimate that can be responsibly reported. The Australian survey and U.S. county-registration study also answer different questions in different populations; neither should be treated as a universal measure of what every Tesla buyer thinks.
So, is Musk “killing” Tesla’s sales?
That wording goes beyond what the evidence establishes. Musk’s reputation is a documented negative consideration factor among surveyed Australians, and AP has included consumer backlash among the possible forces affecting demand. But the survey measures stated willingness rather than lost purchases, Tesla’s latest global deliveries rose year over year, and the company and AP identify several other market forces. The defensible conclusion is that Musk may be hurting Tesla’s appeal to some buyers; the size of any resulting sales effect is not established by these figures.
