The system does not need to be plugged in. Nissan plans to introduce it in North America in the 2027 Rogue Hybrid, positioning it as a way to offer electric-motor driving without requiring drivers to charge at home or at public stations. Whether that strategy will strengthen the brand remains to be seen.
How does Nissan e-POWER work?
In the 2027 Rogue Hybrid configuration announced for North America, the gasoline engine works as a generator. Electric motors—not the engine—drive the wheels. That makes e-POWER a series hybrid, rather than a conventional hybrid arrangement in which an engine can also mechanically propel the vehicle. Nissan says the Rogue uses two electric motors and standard dual-motor all-wheel drive, with no transmission. Nissan’s U.S. Rogue Hybrid page describes the setup.
Because the engine generates electricity, the Rogue e-POWER does not require plug-in charging. Drivers refuel it with gasoline. Nissan describes this as a way to deliver electric-motor driving while retaining gas-station refueling; it is not the same configuration as the separately announced Rogue plug-in hybrid. Nissan’s Rogue Hybrid FAQ addresses both how the system works and whether it needs to be plugged in.
What changes in the third-generation system?
Nissan says the third generation pairs a purpose-built engine with a modular electric unit it calls “5-in-1.” That unit integrates the motor, reducer, inverter, increaser and generator. Nissan says the engine can be operated independently of driving conditions, while the integrated unit is intended to improve packaging, efficiency and quietness. These are the manufacturer’s design descriptions, not independent comparative test findings. The technical details are on Nissan’s e-POWER technology page, marked “As of September, 2026.”

What fuel-economy improvement has Nissan claimed?
In its March 2025 North American announcement, Nissan said the third-generation e-POWER would deliver up to 15% better high-speed fuel economy than the then-current second-generation system. The claim is limited to high-speed conditions and that generation-to-generation comparison. It is a Nissan target or claim—not an EPA rating, a universal savings figure or an independently verified real-world result. Nissan’s announcement is available at Nissan News.
The reviewed Nissan announcements do not establish independent fuel-economy results for the Rogue Hybrid or head-to-head performance against Toyota, Honda or other hybrid systems. A comparison across brands would need equivalent test conditions and independent data; Nissan’s stated 15% comparison does not provide that.

When is the 2027 Rogue Hybrid expected?
Nissan has described the Rogue Hybrid as its North American introduction vehicle for the new system. Its U.S. product page lists limited November 2026 launch quantities for the SR with Technology Package, with other trims expected in January 2027. Nissan’s Vision event release describes a late-2026 launch planned for the United States and Canada. These are announced expectations, not confirmation of dealer inventory; timing and trim availability can change. The North American schedule should not be assumed to apply in other markets.
What role does e-POWER play in Nissan’s strategy?
Nissan is presenting e-POWER as a way to bring electric-motor driving characteristics to customers who do not want to depend on plug-in charging. Its strategy materials group Rogue and X-Trail e-POWER Hybrid among the company’s global core models. That shows the technology has a portfolio role in Nissan’s plans; it does not prove future sales growth or a broader brand recovery.

At its 2026 Vision event, Nissan said nearly 2 million vehicles with e-POWER had been sold since 2016. The figure is the company’s cumulative total, not an independently audited statistic. Nissan also cited nearly 10 million Rogue/X-Trail family vehicles sold globally since 2000, including almost 4 million in the United States; those figures describe the nameplate family, not e-POWER sales. Both totals come from Nissan’s Vision event release.
The technology page also states Nissan’s goal of bringing e-POWER costs to internal-combustion-vehicle levels by 2026 through greater sharing and modularization of EV and e-POWER components. The stated goal does not establish that cost parity was achieved.

- Dedicated metal transfers recreate side mirror surfaces and headlight sections.
What remains unproven?
Nissan’s announcements explain the architecture, describe the planned launch and state the company’s efficiency claim. They do not establish independent real-world fuel economy, long-term reliability in North America, customer reception or the system’s effect on Nissan’s financial or brand performance. Nissan representative Christian Spencer calls the system “proven, reliable technology” in the company’s technology explainer; that is a company representative’s characterization, not independent reliability evidence.
For buyers, the practical distinction is straightforward: the announced Rogue e-POWER is driven by electric motors, uses its gasoline engine to generate electricity, and refuels at a gas station rather than plugging in. Whether its efficiency and ownership experience prove competitive will require independent testing and experience with vehicles delivered to customers.
