Selling online can help you reach buyers or compare offers, but it does not automatically make the sale faster, safer, or more profitable. Compare a private listing, a dealer sale or trade-in, and any managed online service by likely net proceeds, time, effort, control, payment handling, and paperwork. The best route depends on your car and how much of the transaction you want to manage.
How the main ways to sell a car compare
“Selling online” can mean advertising the car yourself or using a service that manages parts of the sale. Those are different arrangements: in a private listing, you usually handle buyer contact and the transaction; a managed service may coordinate pickup or paperwork, subject to its terms.
| Route | What it may offer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Private sale advertised online | You control the asking price, listing, buyer interaction, and negotiation. It may bring more than a dealer offer, but no route guarantees the highest net proceeds. | You handle inquiries, appointments, test drives, payment, and transfer details, and must screen buyers for scams. Kelley Blue Book (KBB) estimates an average 1–3 weeks for a private sale on its comparison page; that is KBB’s estimate, not a general-market promise. KBB selling options |
| Dealer sale or trade-in | A dealer may consolidate steps, and a trade-in can coordinate with the purchase of another car. | Get a written offer and distinguish the car’s value from the replacement vehicle’s price and financing. KBB says a dealer sale can take the same or next day on its page; this is a provider estimate, not a guaranteed timeline. KBB selling options |
| Online managed sale or pickup | A provider may combine online intake with scheduled pickup and some managed paperwork or payment steps. | Check eligibility, inspection conditions, whether the final offer can change, fees, payment timing, and exactly which steps the provider handles. KBB describes scheduled pickup and dealer inspection for one of its offerings; that description applies to that provider’s process, not every service. KBB selling options |
Compare likely net proceeds, not just the headline offer: account for any loan payoff and seller-paid costs, then weigh the time and work each route requires. There is no universal formula in the available guidance for predicting which channel will pay more for your particular car.
How to choose a route and prepare the sale
- Describe the car accurately. Record its trim, mileage, condition, options, title status, and loan or lease status. KBB advises considering condition, mileage, and features when valuing and listing a vehicle. KBB’s selling guidance
- Use estimates as a starting point. Compare private-party and trade-in estimates, then seek actual offers. An estimate is not necessarily the amount a buyer or dealer will offer after inspecting the car. KBB selling options
- Decide how much work and control you want. A private listing gives you more control but leaves more tasks with you. Dealers and managed services may consolidate steps; verify the provider’s current process rather than assuming it handles everything. KBB selling options
- If selling privately, make the listing clear. Use accurate details and clear photos, keep communication and transaction records, and plan viewings or test drives deliberately. KBB listing guidance
- Agree on payment before signing over the car. Use a payment process you have independently verified. Do not accept a check overpayment and send the excess back. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that a deposited counterfeit check may initially appear to clear and later be reversed; banks may take weeks to determine that a check is fake. FTC fake-check warning, February 2025
- Resolve any loan or lien. Ask the lender for the current payoff amount and find out how the lien release and title transfer will work. If proceeds will not cover the balance, settle how the shortfall will be paid before agreeing to the sale.
- Complete the ownership transfer and keep records. Follow your state’s DMV instructions for title assignment, any required disclosures, sale notice, plates, deadlines, and liability-release steps. Keep copies of signed documents and the payment record. KBB paperwork guidance
How to avoid payment scams in a private sale
A common fake-check setup involves a buyer who says they cannot meet in person, sends more than the agreed amount, and asks you to return the difference. Do not refund any part of a check overpayment, and do not buy gift cards, send cryptocurrency, or wire money at a buyer’s instruction. A balance appearing in your account is not proof that the check is final. FTC guidance on fake checks

If someone proposes an escrow or online payment service, independently find the provider and confirm how its process works. Do not rely on a link sent by a stranger. Keep a record of the agreed price, payment, and communications.
What if you still owe money on the car?
Compare the lender’s current payoff with credible offers before committing. If the payoff is higher than the sale price or trade-in value, you have negative equity: determine how the difference will be covered. A dealer or lender may offer to roll that shortfall into a new car loan, which increases the amount financed. The FTC advises checking vehicle value before negotiating and reading the contract closely; it also identifies a private sale or waiting as alternatives to consider. Do not assume a loan has been paid off because someone told you it would be. Confirm the payoff arrangement in the contract and with the lender. Lease and lien procedures depend on the agreement and jurisdiction.

There is no single nationwide checklist or deadline that replaces your state’s rules. Check your state DMV’s instructions for the title assignment, odometer disclosure if required, lien release, notice of sale, plates, and whether the parties should complete the transfer at a DMV or tag office. Requirements vary, so use the rules for the state where the car is registered.
