Four of the five carmakers in Autocar India’s September 2026 passenger-vehicle table recorded lower sales than in August. Kia was the exception, rising 10.24%. The same table shows a different year-on-year picture for some brands: Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra were down month on month but up from September 2025.
September sales: the five makers compared
Autocar India published the following India passenger-vehicle comparison on 1 October 2026. The ranking and figures below are that publication’s; they should not be read as a universal ranking across every sales or registration dataset.

How to read the month-on-month and year-on-year results
Month-on-month (MoM) compares September 2026 with August 2026. Year-on-year (YoY) compares September 2026 with September 2025. They answer different questions, so a MoM decline does not by itself mean a maker sold fewer vehicles than a year earlier.

- Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra fell from August but remained above their September 2025 figures in Autocar India’s table.
- Tata and Hyundai were lower on both comparisons.
- Kia was higher both month on month and year on year, with the largest YoY increase among these five in the table.
Tata ranked second and Mahindra third, but their reported September totals were only 227 units apart. The ranking reflects this particular table and measure.
Why other September figures may not match
These figures should be kept separate from other reports unless their measurement basis is established. Maruti Suzuki India Limited’s official September release gives 236,013 total units: 185,252 domestic sales, 6,542 sales to other original-equipment manufacturers and 44,219 exports. That company-wide total is not the same scope as the 168,744 Maruti Suzuki figure in Autocar India’s top-five table.

CarHP India published a separate September comparison attributed to Vahan, a registration-data source, with materially different maker totals and month-on-month directions. The reviewed sources do not explain a common methodology that reconciles that registration-based table, Autocar India’s comparison and Maruti’s all-sales total. Do not combine figures from these sources as if they counted the same thing.

Do the figures show that demand weakened?
Not on their own. The table documents reported month-to-month changes; it does not establish why they occurred or isolate selling days, seasonality, inventory, registrations, dispatches or differences in company reporting scope. Autocar India characterized passenger-vehicle wholesale volumes overall as broadly flat at around 400,000 units for September; that is the publication’s characterization, not a reconciled total derived from the five rows above.

The article’s references to the approaching festive season and product launches do not demonstrate that either caused the changes. The available reporting supports the comparison, but not a causal explanation for the declines.
