Start with about $1,500–$2,500 per year as a planning band for a used luxury car’s maintenance and repairs, then replace that rough figure with a vehicle-specific estimate. This is editorial budgeting guidance, not a published average or a guarantee. Keep two lines in your budget: scheduled maintenance for the manufacturer’s service plan and a separate repair reserve for failures, wear items and deferred work. A newer, well-documented car may cost less in a quiet year; an older or poorly maintained car can require a much larger one-time payment.
Why one annual number cannot fit every luxury car
Luxury-car ownership costs vary more than the badge suggests. The same model can have very different needs depending on its model year, mileage, engine and drivetrain, previous owners, storage conditions, service history and the labor rates in your area. A dealer in a high-cost city, an independent specialist and a general repair shop may quote materially different prices for the same operation.

Age is a particularly important risk multiplier. CarEdge says expected maintenance costs and the probability of a major repair rise as vehicles get older. On its BMW 7 Series model page, CarEdge defines a major repair as one costing more than $500 including parts and labor, and presents annual costs and repair probabilities by vehicle age. Those figures are estimates for that model page, not promises about every BMW or every used luxury vehicle, but they illustrate why an older car needs more cash flexibility than a newer one.
Condition and records can matter as much as the odometer. A 90,000-mile car with complete invoices and recently replaced wear items may be easier to budget than a 60,000-mile example with missing records, warning lights or long service gaps. A pre-purchase inspection can reveal present defects and overdue work, although the available sources do not quantify how much an inspection improves the accuracy of a future-cost forecast.

What the published numbers do—and do not—tell you
Several commonly cited datasets describe different things. Consumer Reports’ brand totals, summarized by Kelley Blue Book in an article dated April 23, 2024, cover ten years. CarEdge’s ranking uses accumulated five-year maintenance estimates. Kelley Blue Book’s InfoDriver methodology models recommended maintenance and repairs separately using national-average parts and labor assumptions. These should not be blended into one supposedly precise annual price.
Consumer Reports ten-year brand totals
The following figures are Consumer Reports’ ten-year maintenance totals as relayed by Kelley Blue Book. Dividing each total by ten produces an illustrative annualized amount, but not a quote for a particular used car. The period, method and brand-level scope remain attached to every number.

The implied range is roughly $780 to $1,925 for the brands shown, or about $404 to $1,925 across the wider Consumer Reports list cited by Kelley Blue Book. That arithmetic is useful context, but it can understate the risk of buying an older example because the ten-year total is a brand-level estimate rather than a vehicle-specific allowance. It also describes maintenance as defined by that study, not necessarily every repair you may encounter after purchase.

CarEdge’s five-year ranking
CarEdge reports accumulated five-year maintenance estimates of $2,377 for Lexus, $5,752 for Land Rover and $12,032 for Bentley. The ranking page does not state a year for those estimates. Because this is a five-year modeled horizon, it is not directly comparable with the ten-year Consumer Reports totals above. Its value is showing how widely expected costs can differ among luxury makes under one estimation approach.

Kelley Blue Book’s modeling assumptions
Kelley Blue Book’s 2025 InfoDriver methodology defines maintenance as the cost of following the manufacturer’s recommended schedule, using national-average parts and labor prices. It estimates repairs separately with an extended five-year service-warranty approach because repair records vary widely. Its total-cost-to-own calculations also assume specific mileage, financing, insurance, fuel and depreciation inputs. Those assumptions make the output useful for comparing vehicles on a common basis, but they do not turn it into a repair quote for the used car in front of you.

Separate the budget into routine service and repair exposure
Do not put every automotive expense in one undifferentiated annual figure. Build two visible lines, and add a third line when a purchase inspection identifies immediate catch-up work.

The $1,500–$2,500 starting band is meant to cover the first two lines for planning purposes, not to hide a known timing-belt service, worn air suspension, leaking cooling system or other immediate bill. If an inspection finds substantial deferred work, add that amount to the acquisition budget rather than pretending the car fits a normal year.

Record the exact vehicle identity
Write down the VIN, model year, trim, engine, transmission, drivetrain, current mileage and location where the car will be serviced. “A used German luxury sedan” is not specific enough: service intervals and parts prices can change between engines, body styles and production years.

Map the next 12 months of scheduled work
Obtain the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule for that VIN or powertrain. Mark services due by time and by mileage, then check the odometer against both. Convert each item into a local quote. Include tires, brakes and batteries when they are near replacement even if they are not listed as a single scheduled event.

Audit the records for completed work
Ask for dated invoices, inspection reports and proof of major services. Match the paperwork to the mileage. Missing records are not proof that work was skipped, but they make the estimate less certain; budget as though unverified major services may still be due until a qualified inspection or documentation confirms otherwise.

Obtain an independent pre-purchase inspection
Use a shop familiar with the vehicle’s technology and request a written report with safety defects, warning-light scans, fluid leaks, tire and brake measurements, suspension condition and a prioritized estimate. Separate urgent repairs from monitor-only findings. The inspection does not guarantee future reliability, but it prevents a known defect from being misclassified as an ordinary annual expense.

Price the work where you will actually maintain the car
Request itemized estimates from the likely independent specialist and, when appropriate, the franchised dealer. Ask whether the quote uses original-equipment, aftermarket or remanufactured parts, and whether programming or calibration is included. National averages in a cost model may not resemble your local labor rate.

Set a cash-flow target and a reserve target
Divide the expected scheduled work for the coming year by twelve to create a monthly sinking-fund contribution. Keep the repair reserve in a separate account so a routine service bill does not consume money intended for a failure. Revisit both figures after every inspection, service and major mileage milestone.
Illustrative budgeting cases
The following are planning examples, not predictions or published averages. They show how the same starting framework changes with evidence about the car.
Recent car with complete records
A four-year-old vehicle with one owner, complete invoices and no inspection findings may justify a target near the lower end of the starting band for scheduled work, while still maintaining a separate reserve. Confirm that high-cost interval services are not approaching by mileage even if the car feels new.

Older car with partial records
An eight- to ten-year-old luxury car with missing invoices should be budgeted above a comparable documented car because you cannot verify what has been replaced. Use the inspection to identify catch-up work, then fund that work before treating the remaining annual amount as normal maintenance.
High-mileage performance or ultra-luxury model
Complex powertrains, advanced suspension, expensive tires and scarce parts can make a quiet year look deceptively inexpensive while leaving substantial downside risk. In this case, the annual routine contribution and the repair reserve should be planned independently, and the purchase only makes sense if a large unexpected bill would not force you to sell the car.

There is no universal reserve amount established by the cited sources. Instead, adjust the reserve using observable risk:
- Age: increase the cushion as the vehicle moves beyond its warranty period and as CarEdge’s age-related repair probability becomes more relevant.
- Mileage: check which major services are due at the next mileage interval, not only what is due this month.
- Records: documented completion lowers uncertainty; missing proof should be treated as an information gap, not as evidence of completed work.
- Condition: leaks, warning lights, uneven tire wear, rough shifting, overheating, corrosion or suspension noise deserve an immediate estimate.
- Use: frequent short trips, towing, severe weather and performance driving can alter service timing and wear, so follow the manufacturer’s severe-use guidance where it applies.
- Location: labor rates, taxes, climate and parts availability vary by region; use local written quotes for the final plan.
Common budgeting mistakes
Using a brand average as a promise
A ten-year brand total cannot predict the next twelve months for one used car. Use it to compare broad cost tendencies, then replace it with the car’s schedule, records and inspection findings.

Confusing maintenance with repairs
Kelley Blue Book’s methodology treats recommended maintenance and repairs as separate categories. A budget that lists only oil changes and scheduled inspections is incomplete for an aging luxury vehicle.
Ignoring a large service because it is not annual
A service due every several years can dominate one calendar year. Convert time- and mileage-based intervals into a rolling schedule so the bill does not arrive as a surprise.
Assuming warranty protection without checking
Coverage depends on the vehicle’s age, mileage, contract terms and jurisdiction. Verify the actual warranty or service contract before reducing your repair reserve; do not assume a used luxury car is covered because it was once sold as a premium model.

Consumer Reports’ 2025 Annual Auto Surveys asked members about out-of-pocket maintenance, including items such as oil changes and tires, and repairs during the previous 12 months. The published description says collision repairs and uncertainty related to inflation or tariffs were excluded. This is owner-reported recent spending, not a forecast for your prospective vehicle, and it should be kept distinct from modeled maintenance totals and repair probabilities.
A practical decision rule before you buy
Proceed only after you can state three separate numbers: the scheduled services due in the next year, the immediate catch-up work identified by inspection, and the cash reserve you are willing to hold for an unexpected repair. If the purchase price leaves no room for the latter two, the car is not affordable at that price even when the badge and monthly payment appear manageable. Recalculate the plan whenever mileage, service history or a new inspection finding changes the risk.
Bottom line
Use $1,500–$2,500 a year as a starting planning band, not a guarantee. Refine it with the exact model and year, mileage, maintenance schedule, records, inspection report and local quotes. Keep scheduled service, catch-up work and an independent repair reserve visible as separate budget lines; that separation is what turns a broad luxury-car estimate into a budget you can actually use.
